The coach

To casual fans maybe but the Dragons finished 10th and 11th under Griffin. He was punted early 2023 and they unravelled. They have a way better team led by Hunt and decent depth.

Benji has been able to recruit even for a wooden spoon dynasty. He may well be our best option until next year in my view.

The coach is only as good as their roster and until they fix the weak links they will get the same outcome. Luai and Turuva aren’t enough.

They have to sign a prop, second rower, lock, centre, winger and depth for cup. Bula, Turuva, Olam, Galvin, Luai, Sam Fainu, Pole, Api, Twal, TDS, L Fainu.

We have 11 first graders on the roster for next year. If we don’t add another 5-6 from within and through recruitment we will run last again. The club should just be more honest but I can see why they don’t given sponsorships, memberships etc.

Coaches will trust Richo bc he’s a proven winner.

And every coach knows if they win the spoon whatever the club … they’re going to be in the firing line.

Agree no guarantees on galvin staying but that doesn’t mean do nothing, it means do the best job you can to retain him, which means get the best coach available.

How will they trust him if he’s doing the same things Pascoe and Lee did in a short period? If Benji is gone after this year no decent coach will be trusting him to have their job for more than a year. I’m not saying he should do nothing but if we can’t stick to a plan like the old admin did then Richo ain’t changing anything.

No guarantees Galvin stays even if Benji is gone. Being an Issac Moses client there’s every chance he’s out regardless. But if you want to attract a decent coach how do you expect to do that when we sack our coaches in a very short period as of late. 4 different head coaches since 2022, I get Noddy was an interim but he did officially have the position for a period of time. No decent coach is gonna come to a club that barely keeps its head coach for more than a season. Madge was the last one to stay for more than a year and we’ve had 3 different coaches since. Who’s gonna want to come to that if we can’t keep them for more than a year and sack them when they don’t make the 8?

Hypothetically if Craig Bellamy was available next year you’re saying that we shouldn’t sack Benji bc he should be given more time than one year so we don’t repeat the sage mistakes as the old admin?

If you would take Craig Bellamy - than that means you are saying we should sack Benji if there is a much better option.

I'd like to see Brett Hodgson get on the coaching team, maybe as a specialist attack coach. He's had head coaching experience in Pommyland so he should have no problems taking on an assistant coaching role & he bleeds black, white & gold.

I'd ad Starford Toa to that list. He's elusive in attack & a decent defender. He's 500% better than Douehi.
Give some of the young backs a bit of credit, they are playing behind a poor forward pack. Klemmer & Papalli'i haven't delivered the goods they are capable of, Bateman is/was a liability & Stefano seems to play at 50% the capability he has.
We need to sign two decent props & one or two decent second rowers. I'd have Pole at lock or second row.

It’s not producing wins though. Did anyone really believe we were finals bound before the start of this season?
I would love to see Maguire with this roster, if he had stayed on and signed more players like Api, Stef and Papi we would be in the top 8 now. But we’re not!
We’re climbing a mountain here, why keep starting from the foot?? It’s never made sense to me.
We need to stick with Benji and stay on track.
I never wanted Benji from his announcement but c’mon? He’s halfway up the mountain!!! The club needs to show some leadership and support for a change!

Any head coach other than Benji would have been sacked months ago. I like Benji and hope things improve next year with the new recruits already announced plus a few more and hope we can get another win or two out of what's left of this miserable year but whether we finish last or 2nd last, its been a disaster either way.

Personally the concern for me is the attitude. Two teams battling it out to avoid the spoon, one is showing plenty of fight, the other....mmm not so much. I will say, it's obviously on the players, but surely the coach has to accept responsibility if he can't get them motivated.

Also of great concern is seeing the same things over and over like attack going sideways which is a very coachable thing, not being rectified.

Agreed. We need to see some improvement by the end of next year. It could be just around the corner. We should know by then whether he has some ability. However, I am not so sure our CEO will be as patient.

I was not in agreement with Benji as head coach of our NRL squad with no formal coaching experience,in my view he had to at least go out to group six or whatever to gain that experience as a man manager and coach,having said that we are now in the position of trying to combine youth with experience as far as the squad goes being coached by a superstar player with very little coaching experience...
What we should do is let Benji have the next 12 months with some better players that can guide the youth on the field and hopefully Benji can get a copy of the latest NRL coaching manual and read it front to back as many times as possible before preseason..
Benji needs some help and although it seems tough atm I reckon he will become a good head coach in the future,however our team and club are his learning curve so far and we are getting demolished by more experienced teams and coaches...
We need coaches and players of high quality to compete in the toughest comp in the world,how we achieve this is up to Richo to sort what can work or what will work...
While being a member of this club I have taken some beatings along the way,there will be more on the way for sure BUT Im a sticker and I have faith that things will improve gradually in the next 3/4 years,BUT I will say it again BENJI NEEDS HELP,I dont want him to end up looking like a fool after all he has done for us as a player and club icon....
