Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

given he was moved from starting left edge to the middle and finally the bench before he copped an injury, Jackson Ford is a player I deem ideal as Bateman’s replacement.

free agent come November 1 and a south coast native, I’d be trying to sign him from there and pushing for an early release. NZ are pretty good with release requests on compassionate grounds.

Ford and Teig Wilton are the two backrowers I’d be chasing once free agency restarts, with Ford the more attainable of the two imo.

Both have played all their edge footy on the left side though. Doesn't mean they can't play on the eight, but it's a risk

Teig Wilton might be a chance because of the John Morris family connection. He has a very bright future.

I certainly get where you’re coming from. I’m fairly sure Samuela’s a right hand carry, he might be the one to shift to that edge if we go down that route.

A signing we need is an attack coach.
Has there been any consideration to signing Trent Barrett as Robbie Farah’s replacement? Credited with turning the Panthers around. Worked with Luai and Api closely in 2021 and 2022. Head coach experience in three big clubs during challenging seasons.
I believe he would offer a lot working with Benji.

It's the right time to sign attitude over athletisism.

The guys the club are going to add aren't going to be the reason we win games. That's Koroisau, Luai, Galvin, Bula. That's their job.

We need guys that won't give us reason to lose games. The dumb penalties. The loose ball protection. The bad defensive reads.

If we can get 3 or so guys that can not give us reason to lose- and they come with the ability to add a little in attack as well- bonus.

The club has impact forwards. Sam Fainu. Sione Fainu. Fonua Pole. Jordan Miller, in time.

Give me 3-4 guys with a hard edge to them, with one of those guys acting as a back-up dummy half when called on, and another capable of shifting to centre if the need arises (Jazz Tevaga & Harrison Hassett have been mentioned on here & fit that bill).

Our middle additions need 3 things- physical strength (we are too weak in solitary tackling), intelligence (knowing when you simply cannot do dumb stuff) & a hard edge (when the going gets tough..)

As for the Facebook rumour, which I doubt is accurate- but let's say it is- Tex Hoy is a talented player- just not sure how he fits, unless the club knows Mason is not a fullback. Can play centre in a pinch I guess, if that's the idea?

Asiata was always a pretty interesting forward- but he's aging. Talented ball player who I think is as close to Todd Payten as you'll get.

Kaide Ellis is just solid. Probably strengthens depth, and his Super League stats show he doesn't do much dumb stuff- so that's good. If he is the depth the club has talked about- I see how it fits. He's worse than Twal, but if Twal goes down, you don't lose much etc.
That's what we've been doing for years though. Trying to sign honest hard working leaders first and foremost, thinking about skill and athleticism last. Storm recruit athletes and fine tune the rest.
If a player doesn't have the core skills to play first grade then their attitude doesn't matter. Kit may have a great attitude and be a leader amongst juniors, but if we have m can't execute at a high level against men then those skills are useless

Out wingers are too short and do not make much yardage getting us out of our end… we desperately need tall wingers… so what do we do… let our up and coming 200cm winger depart the the club on a TT deal elsewhere…. How smart
Up and coming? Hardly.

Easts are the only team that I can think of who have two tall wingers. Brisbane. Penrith, Wests, Dolphins, Canterbury, Parramatta, Melbourne,St.George, Newcastle,Canberra, Warriors don't.

Isn't Barrett going to Brisbane as an assistant coach ??
