SMH Article 'We’ve lost faith in them’: Balmain consider shock exit from Wests Tigers merger

Barry O’Farrell’s tenure as Wests Tigers chairman will come under the microscope at a board meeting later this month when the fractured Holman Barnes Group, the majority owners of the NRL franchise, will be asked to endorse the former NSW premier and put an end to the political turmoil crippling the club.

As former NSW premier O’Farrell considers his future after essentially being asked to reapply for his position, the HBG is poised for a crucial meeting at which it is expected a section of the board will lobby for O’Farrell to be given a 12-month extension.

O’Farrell was parachuted into the chairmanship on a temporary basis after a governance review instigated by the HBG last year resulted in the entire Wests Tigers board being dissolved.

But directors of the Balmain Tigers, which owns 10 per cent of the NRL club, hinted in emails obtained by this mastheadthe HBG was divided and was now hesitant about adopting all the recommendations of the Crawford-Barnier report, leaving O’Farrell’s position in doubt.

O’Farrell was asked to take on the Tigers’ chairmanship after the review also considered former Australian Rugby League Commission director Catherine Harris, the Harris Farm Markets chair, and legendary rugby league administrator John Quayle for the role.

It was expected the appointment of four independent directors to the new Tigers board would have been completed by now, but O’Farrell still heads a temporary board featuring one representative each of the HBG, Wests Magpies and Balmain Tigers – and with no certainty about his own future.

Elevate Talent, the external recruitment firm tasked with filling the positions, has been asked to suspend the process.
According to sources not authorised to discuss the matter publicly because of the confidential dealings, a Wests Tigers board meeting was cancelled two months ago when HBG chair Julie Romero sent an email in the days leading up to it stipulating strict conditions attached to the gathering.

The email caused angst among other Tigers directors and senior management, and the meeting was subsequently abandoned.

O’Farrell and Romero could not be reached for comment on Sunday.

After Balmain Tigers director Garry Leo last week urged his fellow directors to cut ties with the Western Suburbs side of the joint venture, there are fears over the funding model for Balmain’s junior nursery, which is reliant on payments from the HBG. The long-standing agreement is due to expire later this year.

Balmain directors described the HBG as “incompetent”, “Machiavellian” and a “bunch of tin pots” in a series of private emails earlier this week, which has soured relations between the two sides of the Wests Tigers.

In an attempt to calm tensions within the joint venture, the Balmain Tigers released a statement last week in which it said it was “fully supportive of the ongoing relationship with our joint venture partners, the Holman Barnes Group, and Wests Magpies”.

But the HBG has been involved in its own political turmoil after Romero ascended to the chairmanship earlier this year, ousting Tony Andreacchio only months after the review which delivered sweeping changes to Wests Tigers’ governance.

Wests Tigers chief executive Shane Richardson, who was brought in on a temporary basis after the review, has signed a four-year extension as he begins to turn around the club, but doubts remain over whether O’Farrell will stay alongside him long-term.

On the field, Benji Marshall’s side will be trying to avoid a third straight wooden spoon with a win against the Eels at Campbelltown Stadium on Friday night before new signings Jarome Luai, Sunia Turuva and Jeral Skelton arrive for the 2025 season.

Why does it seem that the BRLFC is levering the implementation of the review recommendations when they weren't the instigators?

Why are they supposedly connecting a threat to dissolve the JV on the selection of chairperson or board members when as the review recommended,

Wests Ashfield retains hire and fire rights of the directors of the NRL franchise, meaning under-performing ones are replaced."

Look I don't care who the is on the Wests Tigers Board as long as they have healthy and appropriate interactions with the Chief Exec, they don't leak to media, and they don't interefere with the football department in matters that they shouldn't.

One thing that you have to remember about the report is that it actually strips away a lot of power and authority from the Wests Tigers board in comparison to how it existed in the past.
"Crawford-Barnier have recommended Wests Ashfield separate out reserve powers for the benefit of their 90 per cent ownership of the NRL franchise. The powers hived off are considerable, with Wests Ashfield controlling the purse strings and directorships.

The new board will increase from four to seven after six months, with the appointment of three independents. It cannot borrow money; it can’t sell the business or change the terms of the licence.
Wests Ashfield retains hire and fire rights of the directors of the NRL franchise, meaning under-performing ones are replaced."

This is certainly not straightforward stuff. Of course a few of the old guard fighting the old wars from 25 years ago are going to flex and flourish throughout this process. Also I think with the volume of wooden spoons we've had and with a temporary board and the results of the report etc, I think some more of the 'hawkish' Wests Magpies directors see this as their chance to try and upend what began as a fair and transparent indipendent review to try resurrect a club that has already failed twice before. Roy Masters hinted at that in same SMH article i'm quoting from above. They do have WAY more power now after all.

But at the same time, the good results have aleady been accomplished mostly. Let's not forget all the amazing things that have happened in the last 12 months wrt to pathways, CEO, recuitment, honesty of memberships, Lee and Justin gone.
Good find from earlier in the year @TIGERS

I think this paragraph from Roy Masters summed it back then.

The new board will increase from four to seven after six months, with the appointment of three independents. It cannot borrow money; it can’t sell the business or change the terms of the licence. Wests Ashfield retains hire and fire rights of the directors of the NRL franchise, meaning under-performing ones are replaced."

Independents will come onto the board but HBG will have final say on all decision including who the independents are. Can't see anything but that happening. It's just unfortunate that that couldn't keep someone with sports admin acumen in Dave Gilbert on the board.

This is getting infuriating. They've now suspended the director search?

When do we get out the pitchforks and march to HBG HQ? I'm near ready.

What if it’s the ‘underperforming’ ones doing the hiring and firing like is happening now?
Seriously, what qualifications do Romero and Burgess have to be where they are now?

The key things we need the HBG to do, implement the changes to the Wests Tigers constitution, accept the skills Matrix for directors and install the independent directors. I am still hopeful of this occuring over the next month or so. If it doesn't occur it will be time for the fanbase to act.

I really do think pressure needs to be applied soon. Board role changes at HBG earlier in the year (they could've been unrelated to WT, however the timing was suspect), recent changes to the football club board, and recent reports regarding O'Farrell, and the reported angst from BTRLFC, is all pointing to the governance recommendations being binned in my opinion. The HBG debenture holders are wrapping their tentacles back around the football club, and they're practically unmovable from the HBG board.

Journalists don't get this shit wrong. They're all fed info by someone. It's given the fan base knowledge of what's really going on, and an opportunity to reinforce our thoughts to HBG regarding the governance recommendations for the football club.
There is pressure being applied, hopefully enough to get this sorted in the background.

Agree,

But what evidence do you have this isn't occurring?

And what has this got to do with massively toxic threat to dissolve the JV?

On a completely different level.

The power is there as they have the majority controlling interest. It's not there to abuse so they can put themselves back on the football club board, particularly after just 8 months when these clowns from HBG under-performed on the football club board for over a decade.

The final configuration of the board is still in process.

The only abuse of power is coming from BRLFC in going public with a threat to dissolve the JV

There are rumours and articles circulating that it isn't, very easy for the HBG to come out and say they are implementing the changes that were stated would have happened by June.

Thanks @cochise .

Would you be concerned if all of the above is instilled but Burgess & Montgomery retain their positions on the Board as the reps of HBG & Magpies?
