Onitoni Large to Manly

Onitoni has wonderful speed and movement, can sum up an overlap and possesses the athletic gifts required to succeed, irrespective of what code he plays. he is going to make a lot of money.

but I have also watched him many times and I have never seen him take the line on the way Galvin or Latu does. if he’s going to play 6, he’s only going to be distributing or kicking unless he finds it within him.

WT wanted to develop him as a centre, he wanted none of it.
He is of a centre or fullback than a half. From what I have seen!

They did tell him they wanted to start him off in the centres. Large wants 6 or nothing and wanted a clause in his contract to say if Galvin resigned then Large was free to go. We refused. Well done Richo etc for not bowing to ridiculous contract clauses the former morons did
So we just let him go instead? Might as well signed that clause and had good backup incase/when Galvin sods off! Large also may have changed his mind once being in the team.

After reading all this Large better be the next cleary because people are mighty upset
Sick of reading about people crying about him. He was lazy in matts or whatever he plays in, we still played phenomenal and his only role at the tigers would be as a contingency for Lachie or latu. Good riddance to him and his money hungry managers, and here’s to hoping we get something in return

I find it funny that so many on here are saying no big loss he was only a back up for Galvin and Latu, yet are dirty because he left because he apparently saw the same thing.

Yep. Glad the club is finally starting to show some backbone. Kid is 17 and has achieved nothing and thinks he can demand the world. Nup, terrible for culture, get rid of the entitled jerk
I dont think its fair people are bashing this kid in the forum.
The CLUB, the WESTS TIGERS, allowed a clause into his contract around Galvin...
Thats OUR fault.
It amazes me how short sighted people are on here sometimes, especially if they were in the same scenario with their job, they'd probably do exactly the same thing. Easy to throw stones from afar eh.

You can’t keep everyone. If we play well next year, Galvin will resign and Luai and Fainu will be there for years. There will also be others coming through when Galvin and Luai are in first grade.
We just need to hope that we make big strides forward next year, which I think we will.

But the point is we wouldn't allow that clause into our contract with Large and let him go. How can it be our fault?

I think that's the clause the manager was pushing for but was not in the original contract.

The club denied it.

Wouldnt say hes achieved nothing, he has a very impressive resume' already.

Probably better get used to this sort instances from highly talented young players, its the new now

Huh, the club refused the Galvin clause so he walked.

Clearly using for leverage. All will come to light soon.

It's obvious things are happening as we haven't announced our departing players yet.

Ideally we need to drop 4 imo to sign what we need.
Yeah I agree JB. Whilst Large may and it's a big MAY be long-term pain for us, we need short-term gain! And that's to free up roster spots to get a few more players with the right stuff into our squad.

I feel everything is building to announcements either at the Awards Night (players departing & hopefully extensions to Galvin & Pole & new Major Sponsor) or just after.

If we can free up the roster & cap space of Bateman, Sullivan & Naden, then I can understand some of these decisions if they're linked.

He had a get out clause from the Sheens era.
We would not give in to his latest demands.
So we had no ace up our sleeve for swaps etc. What would you suggest we should have done?
IMO we did the right thing letting an unproved 5/8 leave as we are currently OK for halves.
I much prefer we retain Heamasi Makasini and Christian Taupau-Moors.

Contracts don't mean as much any more especially when dealing with minors.

Besides, Large was a long way from NRL, and we have way too many players under development.

We need traction now.

**Large consequences

The ridiculous clauses in Stefano Utoikamanu’s Wests Tigers contract, where he could leave if they missed the top eight, have resulted in the club adopting a new approach, and that has cost them rising star Onitoni Large.

Large, who has joined Manly, wanted clauses inserted in his contract that made him a free agent if Lachlan Galvin signed a new deal to stay at the Tigers beyond 2026. The Tigers no longer want to do deals that can come back to haunt them in the future. Particularly when the intention is for Galvin to be a long-term Tiger. It would mean they would have developed Large for another season or two and then potentially lost him. **

I've watched Onitoni train and play .. yes the kid is overly talented with plenty of speed and silky ball skills .. BUT i have never seen him take the line on and create something for his support runners. If the hole aint there he doesnt create something .. if the hole there he uses his speed to get through. As some people have already mentioned it .. its like he avoids the contact .. maybe he get used to it .. and get more confident to make the contact. BUT as for his speed .. he's a natural runner and in League having a player with his speed is a huge bonus. Sad to see he go .. im pretty sure his younger brother Ashton will follow him out of the Tigers .. Ashton is also pretty speedy and plays 9 ..

I'm getting pretty sick of players who have clauses in their contracts .. the only clause that should be in a players is: You want to Rugby League in the NRL for the WestsTigers .. sign here .. !!! Contract done .. !!
