Who are we thinking gets the gig? For a long time I was adamant that Api had done nothing wrong to have the role taken off him. I thought it was a good option to have he and Luai share the role. But I do wonder if there is a correlation between Api’s captaincy and all of the bone headed plays he’s good for. Does he try too hard knowing he’s the leader? He was the obvious choice the last two years, but we had no one else. And I really don’t know if he’s suited to the role, even if he’s sharing it. I’d be really tempted to take it off him. Not as punishment, but just a responsibility he no longer has to worry about. Just let him play. Luai on the other hand is a born leader. He relishes on being THE GUY. I think the gig should be his. He’s made for it. Worked for the Dogs with Crichton, and Luai is way more of a natural leader than Critta.

I think they will work well together, API is the lead by example type leader while Luai is the guy to hold others to account. I'd be going with both of them.

I was wondering exactly the same and for similar reasons. Api is the lead by example type on the field - I have no idea how he approaches leadership off it. I think the key is that while lead by example is good we also need to have somone who holds players to account on the field. Benji and Co can do it off the field no problems.

Luai has the runs on the board and the personality to be that person. For mine I think Api retains the C and Romey pick up the VC and the role of directing the team around the park and holding players to account while he is on it. Let's face it he is also better positioned that Api to do that.

We have a yong team combined with seasoned players who have been falling short. We have walked past sub standard performances for years - it we want to change the culture we need to call out poor efforts - in a professional and accepting manner - otherwise what we let go is what we accept.

Benji needs to create that culture. The fact that Naden and Bateman couldn't handle being called out shows how poor our culture has been. Then again, not being there, it is possible that the way Benji called them out was part of the problem.

Our coaching staffs need to have a good hard conversation with the playing groups within the club and have an open 360 degree review each week with a set of rules based on improving team performance. It is very easy to say, very hard to do well.

I have been banging on about leadership for a couple of seasons now - it is what we truly lack. Richo is showing it in the front office, Benji has put a line in the sand and has shown he won't accept crap from his senior players so we are on the right trajectory. Let's see where it takes us.

The players respect Api. The interview where Api takes the cameras around the COE ( The Fan I think?) was a bit of a red flag for me. I'm sure it's just his personality but that relaxed knock about attitude is also infectious on young players. We need to be driving higher standards and accountability so for this reason Luai gets the gig for me and allows Api to focus on just playing, which I get the sense is what he always wanted, and leading with his footy.

Sorry, Api is not a leader.
He is horrible in interviews - struggling to articulate himself, and doesn’t have the personality to encourage the best out of others.
Being a general on the field doesn’t make you a captain.
I’m not Luais biggest fan, but that guy is a clear leader, great spokesman and bar setter. He will develop standards and make sure they are met by all. He is a natural when speaking with the press, sponsors and other stakeholders and has an aura of professional confidence yet friendliness about him.
He is the obvious choice with Api as a right hand man.

Just on the Panthers, how many of you saw the documentary Undisputed? (if you havent, its on Youtube for free and is fking awesome.)
It was made very clear that they possess a hierarchy of leadership that many fans from other clubs may not realise. I was always under the impression that Nathan was the brains of the operation, working in tandem with his father. On a technical level this is true...however Yeo is the real captain of that team. He always talks first when they huddle. Hey conveys strategy in the sheds and then reiterates on the field the plans of the coaching staff. He is the reason that club sticks to the script despite how the game is unfolding. Cleary is the spiritual leader. He speaks last and provides the Rockyesque speeches. He organises all the play on field and runs the ship...under Yeo's watch.
Api and Jarome have spent years under this leadership structure and have witnessed how successful it can be. I suspect they will go down a similar path. Api calls the shots on field, leading by example and Luai runs the whole operation as the captain.

Api and Luai to be co-captains.

Api is the spiritual leader of the club and you don't just throw that away. He's not the best orator, but you can tell everyone in the club looks up to him.

Then Luai for obvious reasons. He'll then lead the club once Api wraps up.

I think this is what I have been trying to say over the last few days. You just nailed it with the comparison to the Riff- well done! If we can emulate that type of leadership we are finally climbing out of this bloody deep hole we have dug ourselves over the last 12 years.

Seen it and the documentary the year previous.
You would also see that despite the pedestal Nathan is on he is such a laid back guy. He demands excellence through his own practice and teachings and leads that to the others but he isn’t a ‘look at me, I’m the best’ kinda guy. I think this is where Luai came in. Not that Luai carries on that way but he has the confidence to push the others through there actions not just his own. Might be a bit of a leadership drop next year for them with Fish and Luai leaving.
