Good call, not one I thought they would make coming off that win.

Shame Aaron Hardie has had an injury and didn't really take his chances in his limited overs games. His ceiling is high

The stat that impresses me for test bowlers is Strike rate or how many balls does it take to get a wicket
Well this series
Boland 35 balls career 41 balls
Cummins 41 balls career 46 balls
Starc 54 balls career 49 balls
Lyon 87 balls career 62 balls
Webster 65 balls ( entire first class career )

Based on this Webster has the highest strike rate of these 5 bowlers
He will need to improve

Except Webster was brought in as an all-rounder and is probably best described as a batting all-rounder by his stats and is replacing another batting all-rounder in the line-up. Additionally, your suggestion of Sean Abbott has a strike of 58.7 compared to Websters 64.8, literally a one over difference.
Given Websters batting average is significantly higher than that of Abbott (particularly within the last 2 seasons over doubling that of Abbotts) then I think that extra over without a wicket makes up for itself.

Not sure why you are already writing Webster off given he hasn’t even played yet and has some incredible form backing his selection.

Webster being the better batter gets my vote for all rounder as the bowling has held their end much better
Just going off opinions and stats posted
Used to watch a fair bit of test cricket but drifted away since t20 not watching much at all
Been on holidays and have actually enjoyed watching this series

Again the addiction of the Australian selectors to find an all rounder just astounds me ......pick a batsmen solely at 6 if we don't have a quality all rounder
Webster is a quality all rounder. He is the second ever player after Sir Garfield Sobers to score 900 runs and take 30 wickets in a Sheffield Shield Season. This form has continued into this year (although he is not topping tables due to being in the test squad and missing games). What part of this does not scream “quality all-rounder”.

He topped the batting rankings last year by 160 runs and has averaged over 50 the last 2 seasons (~55-58) and was our second leading run scorer in the Australia A vs India A series behind McSweeney although Webster ended not out in 2/4 innings meaning he probably could have led our scoring as he was only 16 runs behind. So if you want purely a batsman he pretty much fits the bill anyway and can bowl on top of that.

Furthermore, given how ridiculously injury prone some of our quicks are (Starc and Hoff mainly) and the fact this is the last test of a 5-match series and also only 3 days to rest in between picking an all-rounder makes perfect sense to alleviate the workload of the pace bowlers.

Not writing him off at all .I was writing Marsh off
Just with Webster he stepping up a level and I just hope he can bag a wicket or two

As McSweeney learnt Shield cricket and facing Bumrah are worlds apart

As is bowling to Kohli and Jaiswal

You could apply that to literally any player. Shield is the best indicator available and should therefore be used. McSweeney is a 3/4 not an opener however he managed to score more runs over the first 3 tests than Khawaja 🤷‍♂️.
Also Webster has bowled to Nitish Reddy (Indias 2nd highest run scorer) in Aus A vs Ind A and got him out 3/4 times. Seems like a good matchup to me.
McS isn’t even a decent shield player or opener. He made his name playing T20 and it shows.
Oz selectors are incompetent.
Konatas and Webster should have been picked from the first test.
I have no clue what you are on about. McSweeney to open the shield season scored 55, 127*, 37, 72. Then in Aus A he scored 39 (top score btw), 88*, 14 and 25 (last two opening). So that’s 291 @ 97 in shield and 359 @ 59.83 (mental maths so check).
Konstas scored 152, 105, 2, 43 in Shield
and in Aus A 0, 16, 3, 73* (last two @4) so that’s 302 runs @ 75.5 in Shield and 394 @ 56.28.

Australia A was essentially the final audition for these guys and Konstas played pretty terribly in his first 3 innings. Konstas played remarkably in the opening game of the shield but fell off afterwards so I think the selectors made the right call on the given information (and yes I believe they subsequently made the right call by putting him in the team for Boxing Day as our openers were just not working). I don’t think it’s particularly wise to debut a player based on one amazing game but a string of solid consistent performances which is what McSweeney had and Konstas didn’t at the time, but Konstas went to work and proved what he is worth afterwards and earned his selection on merit not potential.

As for your claim “McS isn’t even a decent shield player or opener. He made his name playing T20 and it shows” this is completely untrue apart from the opener bit. I watch the BBL and he’s pretty average in it much better suited to the longer formats. He may have made a name there because no one actually watches shield cricket but in the last Sheffield shield season he scored 762 runs (4th most <20 from 2nd) @40.10 with 3 100s (=highest) and 3 50s. This is a significant improvement from the 492 runs scored the year prior. McSweeney used to be an average fringe shield player but he’s worked hard and seen substantial improvement. So yes he is a decent (more than decent) shield player and no I don’t think he was noticed for his white ball skills.

Dunno about Webster because I thought Marsh was good but obviously is not in form at all. Probably should have happened by Boxing day as he had an ok game at Perth.

Anyway I think we are both on the same page for who we believe should be on the team for tomorrows test just wanted to correct some historically inaccuracies. Hopefully they all play well. Go Aus!

I didnt read your entire post as I know Mcs’s recent good shield form this year only, and a drought every other year. He is an average shield bat and not an opener, and should never been picked. The other reason I didn’t read your text is bcoz I am going to today’s game to watch it live.

Have a great day champion @Buttface - and maybe tell us the "vibe" you find watching the game.
