MOTM to Lyon for taking the wicket of a number 11 on a fifth day pitch, such a match winner 🙄 Honourable mention to Marsh for doing SFA, which is a significant improvement. Best wishes to both on their retirements. Can't avoid defeat in Sydney carrying these two, unless it rains for a week as usual.
I get you don’t like Lyon but you can’t ignore the fact he had a good game. He took 5 wickets for the match so given we have 4 bowlers (+ allrounders) that’s pretty much par. For comparison Jadeja who would be India’s equivalent of Lyon only got 4 wickets and Sundar only got one. Additionally he got Jadeja, Reddy x 2 and Sundar who are all good quality batsman. He doesn’t really get access to much of the top 4 so it’s kind of hard to get them out.

Breaking down the series it’s pretty evident all those previous pitches were highly pace friendly and not offering much for the spinners

Perth: 36 wickets total. 4 to spin (11%). 2 Lyon, 2 Sundar
Adelaide: 30 wickets. 1 to spin (3.3%) by Ashwin. This was when Marsh walked but Snicko shows no edge or any deviation so technically 0.
Brisbane: 27 wickets. 2 to spin (7.4%). 1 Lyon, 1 Head.
Melbourne: 40 wickets. 11 to spin (27.5%). 5 Lyon, 4 Jadeja, 1 Sundar, 1 Head.
So in total: 133 wickets. 18 to spin (13.5%). 8 to Lyon, 2 to Head, 8 to the Indian Spinners.
I only quickly checked so would be good to double check.

So Lyon himself has got the same amount of wickets as the Indian spinners throughout the series and Indian produces high quality spinners generally and no one is degrading the quality of their spinners really.

Additionally he scored like 60 runs in this test which is more than Head, Marsh (I agree with your sentiments on him btw) and Carey. Those 41 runs in the second innings could have been extremely valuable if the indians knew how to bat and also would have worn the indians out a bit more.

I get you aren’t a fan but credit where credits due.

Marsh has to go. Scores this summer:

6, 47, 9, 5, 2, 4, 0

Averages 28 for his career so it's hardly just a blip.

After his 2/12 in the first innings of the series he's taken 1 wicket for 127. Travis head has taken 2 wickets in the same period.
But he's the flying Bison 🤣

No he is frustrating on a day 5 pitch. Does not finish games off at all when he needs too.
Thats how I feel too. The good news is he plans to play on until after the Ashes in 27. Personally I'll be disappointed if he is still our go to spinner by then.

In the past I would agree, but he got absolutely nothing out of this track for five days. Bowling offies on a road is a very tough ask. I guess the one thing in his favour was he was bowling with plenty of runs in the bank, so he was not under scoreboard pressure

That was really enjoyable test cricket.
Both teams first innings batting was great, both teams second innings bowling was great. Our tail end batting was likely the difference.
I reckon 3 or 4 guys from either side could have got the man of the match as well.
Good game, good win.
Hopefully Sydney doesn’t ruin the series with a washout.

Like Brisbane.

Wow .....totally unexpected......left the Sunshine Coast at 3 for about 100 telling the daughter it would be a draw......then turned radio back on as the 9th wicket fell....great win .....well done Australia 🇦🇺
I went out back for a bit they were 2 down and seemingly cruising... Come back in.theyre 6 down...four pretty quick wickets did the trick
Not often I watch and entire 5 day test but this was enthralling... Konstas opening day one my initial interest then just got into it from there

Cummins captaincy has been questionable at times but he got everything right yesterday. Especially hanging the bait out there for Pant with Head and Lyon and declaring with enough runs to set ultra attacking fields.

Thought Cummins and Starc were unbelievable in that first session too. Starcs set up of Kohli was perfect

Yeah, it was an interesting ride for sure.
Kontas with his first session attacking batting,
Our top 4 all punching first innings 50's,
Smith completing a first innings hundred,
Bumrah with 9 wickets for the match,
Labuschagne with two scores over 70,
Jaiswal passing 80 in both innings,
Kumar Reddy with his first innings 100,
Patty with two determined stays at the crease when we needed him to as well as bowling 47 overs for 6 wickets
Lots of good contributions from both teams.

Before this test I posted
What on earth do we do if Travis Head fails ? as he made up for many top 4 failures in the first 3 tests
Well the very pleasant answer is the top 4 stood up especially Smith
Konstas made the first 90 mins irresistible viewing
Capt Pat saves us with both bat and ball
Even Starc who I was worried was not fit enough produced great spells with the new ball .Probably unlucky as Jaiswal had about 15 play and miss off his bowling
For Sydney I can't see how Marsh gets picked as his main contribution is catching
If the Sydney pitch is a green seamer then give Jhye Richardson a go in place of Marsh ( Jhye being such a crock would need to pass rigorous fitness testing)
If Sydney pitch is a rank turner then bring in Todd Murphy in place of Marsh
Carey bats at 6 , Cummins at 7 Starc at 8 Lyon at 9 Murphy / Richardson at 10
Boland at 11

Although I don't like BBL .I heard that Jhye Richardson is released to play for Perth Scorchers tonight. Given he is one possibility to replace Starc if he fails fitness for 5th test
Well he bowls first over went for 11 and despite this Adelaide 3-30 off 6 overs
The he also bombs a sitter of a catch on the boundary .Didn't lay a hand on the ball .All in all so far he's a NO .
