Tony Sukkar #292

Why do so many not rate this guy?

I've been on the fence because I've watched him since he was 8 years old. He dominated as as kid but he didn't have that mongrel. He was a nice kid who just did what he had to so I thought he would never be tough enough to make it. But the 3 games he has played this he has looked great.

Coming on against Brisbane we were being carved up and he defended his side fantastic. He then came on last week against Melbourne when we were getting pumped and was our best defender.

Then tonight he looked like a beast. He runs a great line, has post contact metres, and looks strong in defence. His hit on Campbell Graham was superb.

Then you say he is only 20.

Deadset, I reckon we have a backrower here. Left or right, it doesn't matter, but he looked good on the left tonight.

I've defended Seyfarth but he really is someone who doesn't have the talent for the edge. He is a middle who can play 8 to 12 games a year.

Sukkar must start next game

This. His production matches or exceeds Seyfarth in a lot of areas already and he plays less than half the minutes.

Whether that says more about Sukkar or Seyfarth, I’ll let the people ponder that one.

Bit of both. But every carry this kid has had in first grade he has poked his head through and landed on his front along with running good lines and defending strongly. That's a strong backrower. If we put the work into him by the time he is 22 he will be a weapon

Agreed. If Latu can stay healthy, he’s going to have a field day putting Sukkar through gaps

He played very well tonight.
Anyone who has watched him play more than a few times could advise he is a powerful ball runner who adds value from an attacking point of view, but it’s his lack of effort plays defensively that can be a concern.
We could potentially build that up by playing him approximately 40mins each week and look at increasing his minutes once this improves.
Benji continues to play our edges for 80mins every week because most other teams do it, if we are struggling in this position there is no reason why we cannot interchange players to try and get more impact.

I’m happy to see more of him before saying he has it.

He gets over the advantage line and can put on a hit. He just looks sluggish when he plays. Also looks gassed quickly as well at NRL level.

Ease him in. Keep him in the 17 in a job share with Sam F (if healthy) and Seyfarth. He’s only 20. Ideally another 18 months and two offseasons before becoming a regular but the state of our roster means he will likely play sooner rather than later.

Looks better than Seyfarth.

That is not saying much. Most first graders do, as do most NSW cup players. Sukkar looks an par with an average reserve grader, so while an improvement, he is another sign of how bad we are

Well Benji keeps picking him as 18th man or 4th bench, he obviously sees something.

Poor old Seyfarth I respect what he's been able to do with his career, but he's hit a speed hump this past month, really sketchy play since the Cronulla game. He absolutely has to make his tackles and work his arse off otherwise he's no good to us for his limited attack and desperate lack of speed.

I first saw him v Warriors for the Maggies he was the standout that night....havent watched the replay of tonights game yet but he stood up again ...a few of his team mates should take a leaf outta his book

He ran hard and was a threat with each carry, it might have been a breakout game for him and was one of the few positives from tonight.
Defending strongly on an edge for 80mins is his problem, but as I’ve previously stated, there is no hard and fast rule that says your edge back rowers must play 80mins, so we could see him in playing 30-40mins with him coming on or going off at around the 25-30min mark and gradually increasing his minutes each game if his form continues to be good.
