LIVE GAME Round 13 v Cowboys

Live Game Discussion
Yep it was the worst thing that could have happened. All of his poor decisions and errors were glossed over to keep him happy. Had he started out with a couple of really poor games he would have been sent back to reggies to work on his game. Unfortunately it didn't happen that way.
I wasn’t as impressed as most were with his first game. Canberra flogged the pants off us.
You are right though, he saw success after that and it sealed peoples opinions on him.

That was a very messy situation and to be honest, that dude never took his eyes off the ball. Could have gone either way. I think there were worse decisions made but here’s the thing…resilience under adversity breeds champions. It is an aspect this club has never embraced. Poor decisions make us fall apart.
We need the us v them mentality that some other clubs have utilised for decades now.
In the same way that Douhei never took his eyes off the ball when he turned and took Batemans lane towards the ball ? Obviously good teams overcome referees decisions but that does not excuse the bunker completely ignoring precedent .. the “disruptor” took out the legs of the defending catcher well before the ball arrived .. the entire rule was made to prevent this for the catcher’s safety and yet “all good” because he was looking toward the ball .. he still is responsible for getting it wrong and creating a very dangerous situation.. it is really black and white

You are incorrect on the Doueihi one. That was obvious, and was a scoring opportunity. He prevented a possible try through illegally stopping the runner. Professional foul and sinbin.

I don’t have to crucify you. You do that all on your own, Mr Football Anxiety 👋

And have the balls to tag someone if you’re going to take your usual passive aggressive digs.
Hey man we’ve been over that , you’re still banging on , because I was right in the end . But anyways , I was joking , as …. I’m actually starting to agree with you on Seyfarth .
As a middle getting pushed back in contact constantly is really hurting us . I’m just struggling with how much I value intangibles , like kick chase , clean up work , first hit up back , when everyone else is gassed . But 7 tackles missed is really annoying . Especially in moments when we need the cover tackler to make that tackle . Same with AD . If he’s making a lunge for the ball carrier , he nearly always misses . They’re both really bad at judging when to leap to get thier arms around . AD has just gotten infinitely better at judging when to jam and when to slide . So can’t be too critical . He’s come in leaps and bounds in his defence . I also noticed with his runs last night , he wasn’t backing into the defence but trying to power through and find his front .
It wasn’t a dig at you . If anything it was a wink to a previous argument I thought we’d agreed to disagree on! Relax mate !. I simply forgot to tag you . There’s no skullduggery . Otherwise I wouldn’t have said it . If anything it was a nod to you and that you may have been right about seyfarth . I just forgot to add@.

Benji should put together a list of 50 similar tackles from the weekend that didn’t get sin binned and send them to the refs boss. The refs read the papers all week and there is a bias there (probably subconscious) for sure.
So if I’m coach and know there is a bias( subconscious or otherwise) v my team I coach them to be very aware and probably over compensate. By analysing the issues then you will see the patterns. No point in going through this “ poor us” exercise week after week and not trying to address it at the root cause.
Unless we think it will stop, then it’s just another hurdle our club has to climb in our ride up the ladder.

Sure we got some harsh calls, but we often do as do most teams that aren’t the favourites on the day. Our problems are of our own making and there’s a few of them, not the least of which is having the right cattle.
That game was a perfect example of how a few quality players can make a huge difference. Without Deardon or Drinkwater we win that game easily.
Even putting roster aside, when our group decide to use their shoulders and make first contact in D actually hurt, and when we move up quickly in D and take the oppositions time and space it will make a huge difference to our game. Our efforts must be focused and our intent and enthusiasm/ hunger needs to lift.
It can be a very simple game, the basic foundation is RUN HARD and TACKLE HARD!!!

I don’t think it’s that mate . It feels like when we are 12v13 the guys are really bad at compressing the field /theyre coached not too .
For me you watch most other teams and theyre basically of the gameplan of yep we are a man down , but you have to get to the edge to find the space . It’s not here in the middle .
They went through the guts on 3 of the 4 tries . I mean thats unacceptable IMO.
Almost as if some players go “well they’re going to score , that sux”

This side is losing the first contact and wrestle battle.

That is causing quick play the balls for the opposition and mayhem around the ruck. We are trying to muck around in the ruck to combat it and its costing us
.

This side is impressively bad at improving some of the basics that all football sides should be doing to guve them every chance. More line speed and intensity in first contact.

I'd go so far as to say that it, alone, has contributed to at least 2 or 3 of our losses this year.

In spite of the skinniness of this squad, the inexperience of the coach and the younger players and some of the execution of what still appears to be a very disjointed side, they have a couple of quick-fixes that are simply not being looked at/improved.
Ive got be honest, I didn't see the whole game, but this is why quite a few on here were very concerned in Round 1 V Knights. There were plenty on here that were happy with the scramble defence despit 50 odd missed tackles. I said it then and I'll say it now again, it is not sustainable to scramble all game. As you say the first contact needs to be far better.

First contact, dominate the tackle, get your defence set. Why has that always been such a problem for this club??? It feels like our goal line defence is better this year, but it's the roll on up the field that puts us on the back foot all the time and it does my head in.

Agree to disagree on football anxiety but all good. Glad you’re seeing the light on Seyfarth.

Yep all fair points and Douiehi has been really good for us defensively no doubt. I believe da Silva use to kick goals so you could in theory have either api or da Silva convert assuming one of them was on at all times…

I mean tbh, our problem is mainly the forwards IMO. Do wonder how Douiehi would go though as a utility player after an off season. Alas probably won’t ever happen…
There is more than a sense of irony in your comment “ Douehi has been really good for us defensively”. Now who’d have thought that would ever be written in 2025.
He’s certainly not dynamic but he’s now solid and kicks goals but I don’t think we can expect much more than we’re getting.
Not a line breaker, nor a setter upperer, he’s holding up an end for us and he is already a potential utility coz he can play 1,3,6 or 7.
He’s the closest thing we’ve had to a Ross Conlin, or a Darryl Halligan, but we cant stick him on the wing coz Turuva and Skelton have that locked up.

100% agreed. Way too much space in the middle and often we lose all shape in D around the ruck. We allowed Deardon to run and bounce off players without getting up and shutting him down.
Communication and contact in D is lacking but we are looking gassed at these points and it is because we are being dominated most of the time. We need to drive the opposition back in D and we need to get over the advantage line in A. We are playing both sides of the game off the back foot too often.

If I’d have said performance anxiety I don’t think you’d have an issue . I simply couldn’t find the word all those years ago . But that’s what I meant . I just thought the number 1 issue for why a guy who’s obviously talented , couldn’t perform was it was all too much for him . And I don’t shy away from that .
It’s not / nor was it ever an excuse , he was on over a million, but he’s still a human being . The real issue was the club should have cut bait a lot earlier than it did . Or handed the keys to someone else . We just doubled down on him , and now we are still paying the residual effects of those decisions 5-8 years ago.

Hunt is is beyond horrible when he’s gassed . He’s really poor defensively . He just has no resilience / second wind , when the “geez I’m tired” starts creeping into your brain .
I think the best way to utilise him is off the bench , at the end of the first half for 10 minutes , then another 10 to start the second half .
Anything longer , he just doesn’t have the motor .
And I have no idea why we didn’t him back on with 10 to go . He would have punched holes through the defence . Especially off those kick offs .
There must be data to say to contrary , but surely that’s the best time to utilise him . Especially when you’re looking to compound on momentum . If ever there was a player who do that it’s Royce Hunt .

We need a solid prop who makes his tackles nothing flash just a good club player and Hunt off the bench
