Hopeful despair ...

We supporters have been, since 2005, in a state of hopeful despair. A state where one may feel hopeless or deeply discouraged about a situation, but still clings to the possibility of a positive outcome. That's us, isn't it? Picture the last game against the cows. Anyone looking at the result would have thought "Wow, a close game" (and certainly was as far as the score was concerned). Yet having watched the entire game, and adding the benefit of the day after, this game was another replay of many, many others before.

I do wonder if the players themselves share this feeling. Hopeful despair is not necessarily a negative state. It can be a powerful motivator, pushing individuals to continue striving towards a positive outcome despite the difficult emotions they may be experiencing.

I hope we can make the 8's means there is a possibility that we won’t. You wouldn’t “hope” to be on time if you are sure you will be there early. There is no need for hope when something is certain or very likely (law of probability).

Despair is more like a certainty that things will go wrong or remain in a bad state. Hope is like 50/50, but with an emotional sense that luck and/or positive thinking will help push things in the right direction.

My sense is that as supporters we are starting (if not there already) to edge toward a stage of uncertainty or ambivalence, in between hope and despair. Hope is uncertain, so it's not perfect, but it's got the neutral connotation we want. I don't know that we'll be able to do better.

Ambivalence

In the last three years before this year I had nothing but ambivalence...maybe two or three occasions where I was excited...all for a week and then back to normal transmission....very little interest but watched every game and attended a few.
Having a lot of crap to deal with in this period also had my mind on other things

Still feeling positive somewhat this year much more than before...clubs silence and delay on things drives me nuts....we are close and as teflon used to say there are reasons, not excuses...we get these reasons sorted out theres better times coming

But if we dont and we stay concreted and bolted to the bottom, i'l still be here just ambivalent once again

You are correct, Tom.
I wasn't implying that sport rules our world. However, as for any endevour, personal or otherwise, the weight of (our own) expectation will always be a factor that impacts us.

For years the performance of our team set the tone for my week. So basically I had more bad weeks than good ones. Now Iam over my disappointment the second the full time hooter sounds. I think Iam so used to poor results now that I have become immuned to them.

Top eight is now basically zero chance and I would imagine we will be in another fight for the spoon, although Iam confident we might just avoid it this year by one or two places

I have a lot of passion for the Tigers and it’s disappointing when they don’t have success ..don’t get me wrong … just important to keep things in perspective is all,,,,the players ( of all clubs) don’t seem to have a lot of problems doing that from what we see on the field after the full time whistle 😎

You have trained your mind well, pity a lot of us can't do the same but I have made progress, have got the nagging disappointment down to a day now lol.

Yes, what you say is true but Tiger fans have a developed certain level of resilience, that will allows us to continue to live in hope.

A lot of us remember the lowest of lows in 1999/2000 and then 2005, so we know anything is possible.....well here's hoping.

Mate… at the end of the day it’s 30 boofheads running into each other for 80 mins … it’s disappointing when you have a passion for watching it…but there are much more important things in life
Much more important things in life.
Definitely 💯.
There's obviously a lot of boofheads on here, that have nothing better to do.

I am still siding with hope than despair atm. Am a glass half full kinda guy. Here's a take for you all to ponder.

In a nutshell, we are due for the universe or NRL to give us the swing this round.

R1 - lost to Newcastle by 2 (a game we could have won)
R2 - beat Parra by 26 (clear cut win)
R3 - beat Dolphins by 12 (a game we could have lost, Phins were in it until last 10-15)
R4 - lost to Warriors by 2 (a game we could have won)
R5 - lost to Broncos by 22 (clear cut loss but should have been a lot closer with ??? on 4 Broncos tries)
R6 - beat Knights by 16 (clear cut win)
R7 - lost to Eels by 16 (a game we could have won despite margin, were in it until last 10)

R8 - beat Sharks by 2 (a game we could have lost)
R9 - beat Dragons by 6 (a game we could have lost)
R10 - lost to Storm by 64 (clear cut win)
R11 - lost to Rabbits by 10 (a game we could have won if Galvin grounded the ball)

R12 - bye
R13 - lost to Cowboys (a game we could have won, sin bins cost us)

So we've had 2 clear cut wins & 2 clear cut losses (well I still say Broncos should have been close).

3 of our wins could have easily been losses.
5 of our losses could easily have been wins.

So if the universe is fair, we are due for another WIN (that could have been a loss) especially after 2 consecutive close losses.

Interesting statistics, but at the end of the day, it is the scoreboard that counts. Seems to me that based on your last comment, a win is more likely to come from an alignment of the planets than through our own making, then? At this rate, next, we'll bring in the fortune telller! ;-

I feel for you guys who are optimistic.

I've started to mentally check out this season already. I've seen every game but I can see the lack of effort seeping in.

I keep saying this every year. We have lots of positives this season, but so does every other team. We have improved but other teams have improved more and faster than us.

The clubs silence on the Galvin thing makes me think that we lost the battle and the war. We are losing on and off the field.

The amazing goal line D I saw at the start of the year is gone and it's back to individuals doing their own things now.

I truly feel the Board and the Owners dont care much about the results. It doesn't feel like the whole Organization is moving towards the same goal. Everyone is just doing themselves while using WT for clout and exposure.
