Tallyn Da Silva #270

Remain at the tigers, become a legend of this resurgent club.

He will take over from Api soon
Does he have the Ubuntu attitude? API has a quality we have not seen in a Tigers jersey for a long time. His leadership. If Api is signed for another 2 seasons then Tallyn serves possibly another 4 years apprenticeship.
Someone should take him to watch the bulldogs game where he can see the best up n comer to rival the legendary Bob Fulton, sitting on the bench.

Can we stop comparing TDS with Teddy Jebus. Teddy is a freak, and from the moment he stepped on the field uninjured, he was a star. Nothing TDS has done as of yet shows anywhere near that skill level. Added to that, he plays hooker, which is currently a semi-important position, but nothing compared to fullback.

The kid may be good, but to put him on a Moses or teddy line is just inaccurate.
I’ll compare whoever the hell I want with whoever the hell I want.

To be truthful, having watched both Tallyn and Teddy from their Matt’s Cup days, coming through the Wests juniors - I’d say they were equally impressive. Teddy actually looked nothing special during his mid teens.

As for downplaying hookers - how would you rate Cam Smith up against Teddy or Moses ?

Yes it is difficult but Anasta confirmed Da Silva doesn't want to serve an apprenticeship under Koroisau. That he is hot property strengthens our position and hopefully if he is released, we see a player(s) in return to strengthen our team. I haven't seen the Bulldogs linked to Da Silva? Is their cap full😁?
Braith seems to know a bit and I think is close with benji

I found it interesting on his podcast that one of the boys said that the senior playing group had approached Benji about having Latu start with Luai at the start of this year --- and braith smirked and said he didn't want to comment on that .

I like Anasta, he is balanced with his commentary.

ok, mate, you do you. Quite an emotional response?

You compare TDS to teddy makes sense and Harold Mats is an excellent indicator of first grade.

Smith is generational, a super star. How many hookers are the best or even top 5 players in their team in the modern game. In my view, very few.

TDS didn't look out of place in first grade as a 19/20 year old.

Given most of the game's great hookers don't even make it as first grade regulars until like 22, he's way ahead of the curve.

Api himself wasn't a regular first grader until 23/24 years old.

Da Silva will end up at least a solid first grader. Just a matter of just how good he'll be is the question.

I agree mate, he has handled himself ok. And i agree he will be at least a servicable hooker. For me none of these are an issue. the issue is can we afford 2 hookers at over I'm guessing 500k.

Im actually hoping we all have it wrong and we secure a loan for a few years and get him back. That would be the best situation for mine. its just hard to carry someone on that money that we barely play.

He didn't look out of place in short stints when no one targeted him...

The moment he starts, it will change and his defensive vulnerability will be exposed for what it is..

I rate TDS and I think he is a good long term prospect... But the only reason ppl are talking about this is because of Galvin... If TDS was leaving another club, no one would be talking about it.. he's not that good.

Well yeah he's 20 and hooker is the most physically demanding position in the game.

He clearly has good instincts for a young guy and can read the game well. That doesn't necessarily improve with age.

He'll fill out and get stronger as he ages so I'm not worried about his defence. Api wasn't a great defender when he came into grade and now regularly chops people down around the legs.

You may lose 1 close game because of 'luck'. You lose multiple close games because of a lack of attention to detail, lack of discipline and accountability, and dumb errors, which have been a hallmark of this club's teams for many years now.

I'll also add a questionable use of the interchange that have contributed to the losses this season too. You can have 2 middles play 75-80 mins if you have a bit of an injury crisis in the game. But WT seem to be content to play 16 men by choice.
You make very valid points

These mistakes probably aren't made by a more seasoned coach..

It's part of the parcel with Benji though, he is going to be learning on the job because he never served an apprenticeship or coached at any level.

It'll be interesting to see what he does in future games with these interchange conundrums... and whether he learns from it.

It is also funny how short some people's memories are, plenty were saying TDS was poo at the end of last year now he is the second coming of Cameron Smith. I would assume experts in this field such as Richo, Benji would know TDS worth. The media saying he will be an Origin hooker is laughable, he has been a standout in a handful of KOE games and that is it. To lose Api over him would be one of the dumbest decisions ever made.
His issues are 2 fold at the moment . He can’t tackle for long periods of time in the middle , and once he’s fatigued , it’s like defending with 12 men against big barnstorming packs . People don’t notice this because usually the tries are scored on the edge , because everyone else is collapsing to cover the space he’s no longer covering .
So then they call people like Turuva and Toa shit , because they can’t magically defend a 2 on 3 . .
And his deception around the ruck just isn’t there . So when he goes , you know he’s going . Which is fine when the play the ball is a mess , but not so much when you’re trying to get the markers to make a mistake and get in behind , like api does.
I’m not saying he won’t have a 10 year career make 6-10 million and set himself up for life . He will . And I hope he does it at the tigers . But he’s not Cameron smith , he doesn’t play in a dinner suit , he’s not Robbie Farah , and he’s not even Api. He’s Damien Cook . And that’s a helluva footy player . But is that player indispensable? I mean I guess it depends …..

I’ll eat my left sand shoe if Haywood ever reaches the heights Tallyn Da Silva is destined to attain.

I see this as yet another Tedesco moment in our club’s faltering retention history
Have you watched him play ? He single handedly took a sg ball team who couldn’t win a game , into almost making the finals . Brookes and Tannous definitely helped , but Brooke’s spent a lot of time in the sideline , and Tannous looks like a really good game manager , but he’s not the most creative type .
To me this screams wests vs Balmain bullshit . One is a wests junior the other Balmain … for me i think Hayward is better at the same age . He just has some better hookers in front of him so we don’t have to desperately blood him too early like we did TDS.

You just compared 3 different positions ? What are you even talking about ?
Who’s the better prop ? Lockyer or Fittler ….. huh ?

Agree, anyone can look sharp in 20 minute stints. Lets see him kill it in a full 80 minutes, I for one have major doubts about that.

he’s got 5 clubs chasing him ,,,what do they know ?
NQ - no hooker

Manly - Croker and Simpkin- ordinary

Newcastle - Crossland (lock) & Matt Arthur (dud)

Eels - don't mind Smith and Hands, TDS likely better though.

Dogs - Reed being shopped & Hayward the option whos quite handy but could be the 14 also or TDS the 14

Tigers - stuck behind Api for 1.5 - 3.5 years further, could play the 14 here though.

These definitely some opportunities to become the #1 choice, somewhere. However, breaking it down.... I still feel we're the best option for him (extreme bias)

I agree there is upside..

But his defence is a now problem and it's not something that can be overlooked.

You can't play a team full of rookies in hope they develop like you think they might..

We can't afford to be conceeding extra points right now.. and that's what happens if we play TDS over API...

Again not talking about future state.. talking about right now and the immediate future...
