Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Who is this "Roberts" we have signed?

I know we have signed Mavrik Geyer... Hope and Murray are extended to 2026... but I am hearing Murray can walk... We have Javon Andrews (5/8)...

Ok signings but we need some prime names in the front row.

Right because a salary cap system that was designed to work in conjunction with a draft would be worse than that same salary cap system that has a hard cap but allows unlimited 3rd party arrangements. Kent was saying on his podcast he knows of currently 6 clubs breaking the salary cap to varying degrees from minor to massively.
The Galvin situation for instance, in order to let him break contract early and go to the Bulldogs, they would have to negotiate with us. More than likely we would have gotten their first round draft pick as compensation in next year's draft. So next year we would have pick no 6 and pick no 14 in the first round if we finished as we are now. That would compensate us a lot more than 150k.
To say the system only works because the clubs at the bottom are poorly run is an assumption we don't know for sure, as we don't have the added 3rd party funds to build a team like the top teams atm. How can an salary cap work if there are allowed to be unlimited dollars thrown at players outside of it. It's insane. The theory of players at clubs taking unders to stay togeather is garbage. It's only unders on the salary cap but the rest is topped up by 3rd parties. The system works if you have access to them otherwise your struggling to compete.
To suggest the afl draft system would be worse than what we have now is silly.
But none of the things you're talking about would be solved by a draft. In theory, clubs can already negotiate whatever they want if another club tries to sign a player who is under contract - money, player exchange, whatever. The reason it doesn't happen isn't because there aren't draft picks to offer, it's because contracts actually aren't worth that much as leverage for all the reasons we've seen. Isaac Moses made it very clear that either Galvin got released right away or he was going to make the next 18 months completely unworkable for the Tigers up to and including workplace bullying allegations.

Long story short, the Bulldogs didn't offer anything for Galvin because they didn't have to. Giving them something they could in theory have offered if they'd wanted to wouldn't change that.

As I said in my original post, the reason there isn't more of this sort of thing in AFL is nothing to do with the draft: it's because of the incredibly restrictive contracts the AFL forces its players to accept. It's a completely different situation when a player isn't allowed to be even a restricted free agent until they've been at a club for eight years.

I’m not being critical of the new signings because we need depth with NRL experience and defensively solid. I can’t see Geyer, Roberts, Madden making the 17. However when called upon won’t let you down. The way Tristan Hope came in and was solid in our wins over the Roosters and Titians.
Our next two signings IMO need to be middles. A level up from depth players, as week to week players in the 17.
