LIVE GAME Round 24 v Manly

Live Game Discussion
In the post-match press conference, DCE appeared upbeat the Eagles were out of contention for the finals. It was a very unusual conference more so that this could be Seibold's final season.
They need an overhaul. Probably not the worst thing in the world that DCE is moving on. Fogarty will be a breath of fresh I think. As for Seibold, he’s made a career off one good season at Souths in 2018.

Great win BUT we still received some pretty big howlers that have been overlooked because of our dominance (and Manly's disinterest).

1. Api's pass was flat (not forward) so should have had another try. We've seen worse forward passes missed in most games this year, so why suddenly call a line-ball pass forward? Would other teams have received that same call?

2. Non-penalty try. Looked worse than it was but the fact the Manly player made contact to the head, causing the fumble, and we weren't even given a penalty is dubious at best. We've seen less than that given sin bins. So inconsistent.

3. Api 'deliberately' passes into a Manly player in an off-side position. This has always been a penalty. The fact we got penalised for THEIR player being offside is crazy. Especially that we only had one player running into the ball and their offside players was directly between him and the passer. This would be a gimme penalty for a Storm or Penrith but for us we are penalised.

That's not to mention the blatant blocking tactics by Manly that we have been penalised for in the past and our kicker getting his legs taken out (has been a penalty for other teams this year). But that all gets ignored because Taylan May's try looked a little contentious and we got away with it? This unconscious bias is becoming obvious and means we have to not only beat the other team but beat the ref too.

As an experiment, a few weeks back I chose to follow two other teams as if they were my team, one from the top and one from the bottom. Basically just watching the full game and trying to be objective. I chose Melbourne and Gold Coast and was amazed at how many little calls (and some big ones) Storm get vs the Titans. Some we're blatant. There really is a different set of interpretations of the rules for the supposed top teams vs the bottom teams.

But hey, I guess we've gotten used to it, so we are just thankful for the wins we get.

I won't argue against your first and second points, they're fair comment. But I couldn't agree more with your third point. How in hell's name was that a penalty to Manly. The Manly player was directly in line with our first receiver on that side. What was Api supposed to do? He could either turn and make a run himself and run the risk of being tackled in-goal or change his mind and try to pass to the other side against running the risk of being pushed back in-goal. All because their player was off-side in the ruck. I'd love Benji to come out at the presser and challenge the league to justify that ruling. These numbnut referees and officials are not called to account enough.

Yeah terrible call.
They have said intentional passes from dh into.a.player will be penalised...however that has always been in the field of.play....i havent seen one before of a defending team on their own line.
The ref said Api had other options...however th offside manly bloke limits apis options and made it easier for manlys defense...they knew he could only pass left or go himself...all the advantage was with manly there.
Its a blatant deliberate tactic nowadays players lazy lying in the ruck impeding d/h's

Good with all of that except Harry got penalised for the exact same thing Api did not to long ago. I thought penalty against immediately, thinking they must if missed that precedent, and was a low percentage play.

We have discussed this a lot before inns the NRL has a lot to do to clean up that part of the game.
Moving forward taking more ground from where you were held penalty.
Lying in the ruck or standing in the way penalty.
Not letting someone up to play the ball by holding down, leaning on them at the time or having arms or legs in the way penalty.

The ruck really is a dog crap grey area that needs to be fixed.

Relax everyone, we won! Don’t forget, we’re only one loss away from half of this place wanting Benji out, thinking we need a complete squad refresh and warning against an impending apocalypse!

If we had gotten the spoon again Benji would have been in strife imo, the players have dug deep at the back end of the season and got him some deserved results.
Probably says a fair bit about what the players think of him in regards to coaching. If we had a polly culture issue AD wouldn’t have resigned either.
I think for us keep recruiting and retention as we have been and we’re on the up.
