Cricket Season Thread

I remember the last game I did and gave a bloke out LBW he wasn’t happy and let me know it. I spoke to the other umpire, he said he thought it was close, maybe going over. I still second guess that decision.
I couldn’t get over the lack of knowledge of the rules by park cricketers when I umpired. Two examples - fast bowler comes in bowls outside off stump, keeper misses it and batsmen run three byes. Bowler totally loses it and calls me a “cheating c..t” because you can’t get runs if the batsman doesn’t play at the ball.
Second example - bowler bowling right arm around the wicket, bowling half track skidders. Hits batsman plumb in front and goes up for the LBW. I try to explain that he’s pitching around a metre outside leg and can’t possibly get an LBW that way. Next ball does exactly the same thing, hits the batsman in front again and goes up like he’s knocked all three stumps out of the ground. I give the batsman not out again and begin to explain when bowler grabs me and threatens to punch the living s..t out of me.
What makes these examples more ludicrous is that it’s park cricket. These blokes would be the most average cricketers on the face of the earth yet carry on like they’re representing their country.

Champion @coivtny - this reminds me of the old Fred Trueman anecdote:

One test, Fred bowled 3 consecutive balls to the same batsman, and went "nuts" at the umpire of the day:

  • Ball 1: Trueman appeals for LBW, the ball thought to be on middle stump, half way up the pads - but the umpire gives it not out.
  • Ball 2: Slightly more irritated, Trueman bowls again. The batsman snicks the ball, and it goes up to be caught behind. Trueman appeals, but the umpire gives it not out.
  • Ball 3: Now quite irritated, Trueman bowls a third time. The ball goes through the batsman's defense, uprooting the middle stump and sending it cartwheeling. "Geez" Fred said to the umpire, "That must have been close!" 🤣

Rodney Tucker, this week became Australia’s most capped Test Umpire
👏

A remarkable milestone for one of the game’s most respected officials, and a proud moment for NSW umpiring.

Played grade cricket for Balmain if my memory is correct. Think he also had a brother who played for Balmain but could be wrong

They should pick Healy and Litchfield to open, they seem to be getting plenty of runs!! Iam over the other side of the world at present and Fleet Street are getting very upbeat about the ashes, they really rate their chances. One jurno was even predicting a clean sweep. Personally I think they should be slight favourites, but they have capitulated so many times you would not put your hard earned cash on them.

England always overrrate their teams against us especially in the media. They honestly believe that England are the best in all sports and are quite jingoistic.

This is probably the strongest England team we have seen in Australia for some time.

However, they will be playing on Australian pitches which have been pretty spicy over the last couple of seasons. It remains to be seen how the England batsmen cope with these conditions, particularly since they have been playing on batter friendly pitches at home for some time.

If we turn out pitches with pace, bounce and some movement I think the England batters will struggle.

An example of this is comparing the Indian batting averages last summer in Australia with their batting averages in England six months later.

Jadega topped their batting averages in England with 86. He averaged 27 in Australia.

Gill came second with an average of 75.4 in England. He averaged 18.6 in Australia.

Pant averaged 68.4 in England and 28.3 in Australia.

Rahul averaged 53.2 in England and 30.7 in Australia.

Sundar averaged 47.3 in England and 22.8 in Australia.

Jaiswal averaged 41.1 in England and 43.4 in Australia.

If the pitches have some life in them it will be hard for England to rack up their big scores.

On the other hand they have some hostile fast bowlers and our batting line-up is brittle. We might cope better in home conditions, but I expect it to be close.

I think your last point is the difference this year, and why I am nervous. They have a strong bowling line up for Australian conditions.
