Cricket Season Thread

I remember the last game I did and gave a bloke out LBW he wasn’t happy and let me know it. I spoke to the other umpire, he said he thought it was close, maybe going over. I still second guess that decision.
I couldn’t get over the lack of knowledge of the rules by park cricketers when I umpired. Two examples - fast bowler comes in bowls outside off stump, keeper misses it and batsmen run three byes. Bowler totally loses it and calls me a “cheating c..t” because you can’t get runs if the batsman doesn’t play at the ball.
Second example - bowler bowling right arm around the wicket, bowling half track skidders. Hits batsman plumb in front and goes up for the LBW. I try to explain that he’s pitching around a metre outside leg and can’t possibly get an LBW that way. Next ball does exactly the same thing, hits the batsman in front again and goes up like he’s knocked all three stumps out of the ground. I give the batsman not out again and begin to explain when bowler grabs me and threatens to punch the living s..t out of me.
What makes these examples more ludicrous is that it’s park cricket. These blokes would be the most average cricketers on the face of the earth yet carry on like they’re representing their country.

Champion @coivtny - this reminds me of the old Fred Trueman anecdote:

One test, Fred bowled 3 consecutive balls to the same batsman, and went "nuts" at the umpire of the day:

  • Ball 1: Trueman appeals for LBW, the ball thought to be on middle stump, half way up the pads - but the umpire gives it not out.
  • Ball 2: Slightly more irritated, Trueman bowls again. The batsman snicks the ball, and it goes up to be caught behind. Trueman appeals, but the umpire gives it not out.
  • Ball 3: Now quite irritated, Trueman bowls a third time. The ball goes through the batsman's defense, uprooting the middle stump and sending it cartwheeling. "Geez" Fred said to the umpire, "That must have been close!" 🤣

I see we are still giving away our home advantage in the Ashes series in Perth by playing Sheffield Shield games at the WACA instead of Optus .....absolute fools the ACB
