OFFICIAL Jarome Luai - #295

I'm not afraid of putting forward an opinion and I try to back it up with how I got to that opinion. I am also happy to be wrong, and wehn I am I try to learn from it. My push for some time has been for us to recruit an experienced 13, and it is still my preferred option over the risk of manufacturing one over the off season. If we take that approach we are really putting our eggs in one untested basket.

If Benji does it and it comes off he will be hailed as a great coach - if he does it and it falls flat it will be a nail in his coffin. I'm not sure it will be enough to nail the lid shut but it will certainly provide more ammunition to those who are already saying that he can't coach.

I would be happier if we had AD as an option but alos recruited a proven 13 (even a KoE 13 on the rise) as a fallback. I really think that the push for Latu to play 13 is a waste of talent.
Latu may end up there on the comeback trail eased in off the bench but if he stays uninjured he will play 7 soon enough.

Is there anybody out there worth recruiting at lock, the clocks ticking, looking like an in house option now.

I am not sure that May has the skills or the leg speed to be creative enough for our team at 13. The position requires the timing of a genuine ball player and some footy smarts and as much as i like him i think we are better served leaving him to work on his aggression and offload in the front row. Less time and more focus on an impact and faster ptbs would be an improvement from him.
I think the players they have mean he fits in best at prop, but I've thought for a while I'd like to see him tried at lock.

Less phyicality at 13 would see him easily play 80, and I think he is actually very skilful. Is it imperative the lock be a play maker? They already have the halves and Api, and it's not as though Twal or anyone else apart from Doueihi is.

But I do think Doueihi deserves to start after this year and thought he did well at lock. Maybe if Latu isn't in the 7, Doueihi there and try May at lock?

Elliot is probaby the most likely candidate; but if we haven't recruited yet we have to have a plan B already in motion. Latu off a shoulder reconstruction is not likely to be the season starter. We can always trot Twally back out there - but if it didn't work in 2025 I don't think it is going to work in 26.

It is a waiting game!

It is defeinitely not imperative that the 13 is a play maker and nor it imperative that they play as a link. My problem with a May/Twal style of lock is that our halves are play what you see types and at the moment they don't have the time and space to see properly.

May could surprise me in the ball playing/link department but unless we recruit an alpha prop we probably need him more there. He could definitely do a job at 13 and would be a better option than Twal.

Sheens was right about his thoughts on Hastings, a fast thinker that can defend , is preferable over an extra prop out there this day n age imo.

Based on his junior footy (I used to watch quite a bit but hardly ever do nowadays) I thought Mason Teague was going to develop into a very good lock. He never really got his chance at Dolphins with Gilbert/Plath/Donaghue all there and again never really kicked on at Knights last year.
If he could be swayed by a Cup contract, based on our first grade needs, I'd be bringing him straight to the club. Not sure he will ever become the player I thought he would but would like him in the club just in case. If he ever were to reach what I believe his potential in I think he could be a real asset.

Sounds like a good idea greg even if he ends up only as depth in a position we are thin in and if he excels then bonus.

Hell, it could get to the point of desperation that if a monkeys A hole could fill in at lock you would take a chance.

I think that shows the difference between what you want at Lock and 2RF.

A good 2RF that can catch the ball and cross the line is invaluable. It gives a scoring option to the Halfback/whomever that if they see space can pass their way.

While at Hooker you want someone who passes and can manage the game. Likewise lock, someone who can pass and keep the momentum going. ...

So is May a finisher or a passer?

It was the right thinking but the player wasn't willing to play that role.

Which I found strange. As clearly Sheens was around when Madge hired him.
So I suspect Hastings was hired with an idea that he could be 'convinced' to play a lock role.

Other then Hastings, I don't know many halves who could play lock. Sure Cleary and DCE can, but that's more then dreaming. O'Sullivan may be doing that at the Bulldogs perhaps?

we should have grabbed O 'Sullivan ,better average plodder than Keppie

Yea, if that was even possible.

Looking at the stats between the two, Keppie looks better till you factor in Errors and Penalities. At the moment I don't hear were grabbing either.

Burton, Munster and Strange are three 5/8s who could play lock but why would you move them?

Point, I was mainly thinking Halfbacks. But yes Burton and Munster would make great locks....
Ofcourse we would need a magical salary cap to make that happen and then it's an honest question if you go say Burton in the halves with Luai or move one to lock. ...

I think what people were saying is Jackson Hastings to lock, which is signable. But you really feel the guy is past it now.

Totally outside option if very cheap. Hire Luke Brooks and play him at lock.... I mean hey we know he isn't a halfback.

Adam Elliot still availible , perfect lock , but I feel if we wanted him it would be done already , full off seasons are good for all new players , Benji would also know it , I think he would be a solid addition as I believe injury was his issue last season

Luai was ok this year , we need to remember we didn’t have Cleary next to him we had a young injury prone kid and AD , I still think we need to be careful as Latu for me is not the answer , just got that feeling , he tries no doubt but those injury just keep coming , maybe he needs to be like Cronk , Teflon comes of the field looking like he just went on clean and un damaged
