"First Look" At $40M Leichhardt Oval Revamp.

In comparison to the initial designs for the WIN stadium upgrade, ours look clumsy and poorly designed. That’s surprising, because COX Architects are regarded as leaders in stadium and entertainment venue architecture.
At first I was excited because I thought they were getting major revamps. But all it is is an upgrade to their bare minimum they need to be playable. I’ll take it, but it’s very underwhelming.

If this is what we get for $40m sounds like WINs getting about $250m worth

''The redevelopment of WIN Stadium includes a new northern grandstand, an extended and reconfigured southern grandstand, and upgraded player facilities designed to support the continued growth of both men’s and women’s rugby league.

Modern enhancements such as upgraded scoreboards, ribbon boards, lighting, and sound systems are set to elevate match days for Dragons supporters, while improved food, beverage, and merchandise outlets, modern corporate areas, additional amenities, and enhanced accessibility will ensure a more comfortable and inclusive experience for all fans.''

$40M sounds like a big number but it does not go very far when it comes to a stadium.
It doesn't go far because stadiums cost shit tins but also because of the government policies on "transparency and governance". A strategic business case needs to be raised (consultants) then approved followed by a detailed business case (consultants) to be raised and approved and then contracts issued to companies that meet the government guidelines on WHS, indigenous emplment QMS etc (each of these independently certified and audited so that comes off what is built). Someone will be hired to manage the contracts because the government outsourced that skill and now manages the managers so that comes off the construction cost. The management and reporting overheads for working on government sites then gets taken into account so at the end of the day the $40M project will deliver a much lower percentage of the budget as construction.

The price we pay as contributors (taxes) for "transparency and governance" is being ripped as consumers.

Just a question having the seasons first sell out game at Leichhardt yesterday. How do people feel the upgrade to the ground will go compared to what they had yesterday?

hmmmmm as a poor person who only goes GA

That video showed that it will make it harder to jump the fence, so that is good/bad depending on if you usually pay for a ticket.

More seating is a good thing. Yesterday it was disgustingly crowded in GA.

I don't see any large signal tower for wifi so that is a problem for anyone wanting to download their ticket near the ground or pay for something in ground digitally

I also don't see much increase in fridge space for alcohol or improved service space and speed which was another big problem at bars yesterday

There’s 10 towers within 1km of there .
What the ground should have is a wireless mesh network , like a shopping centre . But really even then it would depend on the carriers nakhaul bandwidth allocated to that area. It’s the inner west though , so it would already be substantial .

Thanks, you know your stuff. Whatever they have, yesterday showed it wasn't enough.

They could do what they do at the SFS and SCH , also Olympic venues , with panel antennas off the roof/ light posts , but the carriers put them up themselves , and on a cost analysis wouldn’t do it . Those areas have human traffic always there for other things like fox studios , the equestrian centre next to it etc . Or just people going about thier lives at Olympic park. The uptick of 20k people in gameday, probably doesn’t justify the cost to put it in .
Also carrier matters as well. Vodafone for example are notorious for having poor infrastructure and sometimes piggy backing off Optus network / sharing . I don’t know what they’re up to these days it’s a while since I’ve been on the wireless half of my field .
