Luke Jack, Josese Lanyon, Will Craig and Ben Stevanovic.Any chance of a few if anyone knows
Luke Jack is a smaller forward but has amazing defensive technique, similar to Ray StoneThis was a shocking game to watch live. Became nearly comical with the amount of ball we continually turned over. Just simple errors carrying the ball. Yes it was a bit wet, but they need to adjust and improve ball control.
Javon Andrews was dangerous and wouldn't look out of place if he makes the 19 man NRL squad this week. Luke Jack hits hard in D. Outside of those 2, I can't say many others stood out in a good way.
I watched it again this morning hoping to find some 'hope' after last night's NRL loss. As you mentioned TW, rather uninspiring performance but were some glimmers. This was a shocking game to watch live. Became nearly comical with the amount of ball we continually turned over. Brilliant review BWG.I watched it again this morning hoping to find some 'hope' after last night's NRL loss. As you mentioned TW, rather uninspiring performance but were some glimmers.
Ultimately our failure to respect the ball was the major contributor to the loss (much like last week against the Bears). We completed at an unacceptable 59% according to NSWRL stats compared to Souths 71%. And a lot of our errors were in our own half.
They had a very simple game plan, hold the ball and kick to Will Craig on the 5th. That is why his run metre stats are so high because he brought back nearly every Rabbits long kick, maybe Attard a couple. Not once did the Rabbits kick to Tavana's wing. Tavana only ever took a 2nd or 3rd hit up out of yardage.
And unfortunately Craig made some crucial handling errors and his defensive decisions contributed to 2 or their 3 tries. His inside men also contributed to one of those (Saukuru & Andrews).
On the flip side, Craig did score a great try after being given space by Javon Andrews, making a break down the wing, inside pass back to Andrews who then drew the fullback and passed beautifully back to Craig to score (but Craig also looked to do his hamstring scoring and went off).
We also scored another beautiful try late chasing points when Stevanovic put in a cross field kick 30m out from his own line, collected on the 1st bounce by Tavana just past halfway, then 2 or 3 strides later Tavana put in a beautifully calculated inside kick for Attard to collect and score under the sticks.
Ultimately we lost due to our own errors and no one was immune from it.
As TW said, Luke Jack & Javon Andrews stood out and I reckon Tony Sukkar did too with his carries. Charlie Murray was strong once again as was Broederlow while he was on & then Mitch Taotua. Stevanovic tried hard as game manager and Tavana had some NRL level moments but was kept out of the game largely.
Another note, you look at the player stats on NSWRL and it reads that Luke Jack missed 10 tackles & Tino Tavana made 5 errors. I watched both closely and stats have to have some perspective. Most of what would be deemed a miss by Jack must be due to him knocking over the player but not himself completing the tackle (similar to Api). And 4 of Tavana's errors would be forced, either contested bomb situations in attack or trying to collect a poor pass down the wing.
On Javon Andrews, he just looks a type. Seems good at directing his players, putting his outside men into space, very good short kicking game & strong in 1-on-1 contact in defence. He does lack lateral speed in defence which exposes his centre & winger to make decisions to jam in. He has a laconic running style not dissimilar to that turd at the Bulldogs, lacking a bit of acceleration.
So onwards to next week, simple message for NSW Cup team 'hold the ball'!
Also, in addition to Craig's hammy, Broederlow limped off with what looked like an ankle injury so 2 more to add to our growing NRL & Dev squad injury list.
Yeah I'm loving Luke Jack too. Absolute weapon and has improved so much since last season. He has the makings of becoming a cult hero type with his defence & effort.Brilliant review BWG.
Javon looks a very confident youngster and if called up to NRL this week, I think he will be fine from an attacking point of view and as you say his front on defence is very good, but there is a question mark on his lateral defence.
Luke Jack will play NRL sooner than later whether it’s with us or elsewhere and I hope we keep him with us on a bottom tier contract for a few more seasons.
You are 💯 correct in saying none of his 10 recorded missed tackles caused us any problems as he regularly demonstrates good defensive line speed and puts on a hit.
He forced at least one error yesterday and puts just as much effort in doing things at high intensity when we have the ball.
