Most teams choose to receive the ball first in golden point at it provides immediate field position allowing yo to complete the set around the halfway and kick for advantage. It puts the opposition under defensive pressure and if a break is made it provides and immediate opportunity to win the game without having to defend at all. The disadvantage is if you do not win the set (get to half way) or you make and error you hand over tot he oppostion in prime field postion.
Choosing tor recieve - you may select this option if you are confident that you can dominate the ruck (noting the oppostion has jsut had a break so momentum prior is no guarantee). This would allow you yo pin the opposition and control territory - providing an advantage in your first set with the ball. The disadvantages of this approach are that the opposition has the first opportunity to win the game without having to make a tackle. If the defence breaks down; you are at best faced with the same situation as receiving the ball (returning deep out of your own territory); having to deal with a field goal attempt or losing the game!
This is why most teams choose to receive the ball.
