OFFICIAL Jarome Luai - #295

Aussie citizens residing in Dubai don't have to pay income tax. The PNG gov has said that all players will not be liable for income tax. The tricky part will be if they dont follow the rules about "residing" in PNG. That's where the Aussie govt could be on the hook re changes in the tax law, unfair precedent etc..
On Fox last night they said they must reside in PNG , but when they come back to Australia they will not be taxed on what they have earned while in PNG . Labour government really looking after the poor Australians who can’t live with high energy costs and can’t feed there families due to high prices , but give players who already make a very good wage , a even bigger leg up , thus is disgustingly poor

Have to think about it from Luais perspective, not just the cash and setting up his family for life but his career accomplishments.

-Has major success with his boy hood club
-Joins a struggling rival (understatement) and helps in the changing of culture and achieved success (top8 in 2/3 years)
-Then moves to a new franchise in png and is apart of starting/building a team from the ground up

Remove the bias and I think we can all agree that’s a professional rugby league career anyone could dream of.
And he's not even that good!

The guy deserves all the credit in the world for achieving as much as he has with an ultimately pretty average skillset.

Very important to show unity

Media will keep talking about t how crap it's for us but just saying we are all super excited for Jarome and we support him is perfect.

Both Jarome and Benji have handled this perfectly. The decision was right by Jarome- it's probably the best balance of family, team and individual he could have done. He could have dragged this on and taken the option for next year and let this drag on for another year, but he got this done within 3 days. The decision to go to PNG is right ethically and legally.

The media will keep talking to sell articles but Benji and Jarome have addressed everything as best as they could to minimise these articles.

I like what Benji said that we still have our players signed til 2027 and no one can talk to them until then. Until then, it's up to us as a club to make sure we re-sign them and sell them our vision.

It's very well done by all- transparent and drama- free.

His answer re Galvin was also perfect. Not the same and professionally said that let's not drag Lachie into this.

Well done.

By the time Jerome leaves us at the end of '27, he will have played out 3 years of his 5 year contract. It was always the latter part of this contract that was going to be problematic - an aging player still on huge money. I actually think this is an ideal outcome (as long as we can hold on to the Mays and Fainus). We have talented youngsters that should be prime to go at the end of '27 who would have had to bide their time for another couple of years had Jerome decided to stay. That would have made hanging on to Latu F. very problematic.
I for one, am not going to be slashing my wrists at this news, but rather I'm going to enjoy the next 18months to see if we can continue out climb up the ladder. I'll worry about 2028 when we get there.

We are probably getting him at the best stage of his footy career

Presser here

The trouble with the whole thing is it going to cause a massive inflationary effect on all franchises. Players when negotiating new deals will want more money and will use PNG as their stick. So all the extra cap space created by the new teams that is funded by having two new teams will disappear in a flash trying to keep your existing roster together

The players need to do their talking on the field … if they win games that will be the best way to shut them up
