Who finishes second in the Championship?​



First, the marathon. Now, the final sprint. Three Championship teams remain in the race for automatic promotion to the Premier League.

After 45 matches, it all comes down to one final-day showdown to see who can go the distance to finish as runners-up and go up along with champions Coventry City.

For Ipswich Town, who occupy second spot before the last game on Saturday, 2 May, this is familiar territory as the Tractor Boys seek an instant return to the top flight.

Third-placed Millwall could be returning to the promised land for the first time in 36 years, while Middlesbrough, who are fourth, are looking to end a nine-year Premier League hiatus.

Devenish-Meares outstanding in Sydney FC’s elimination final triumph​


Sydney FC have booked their spot in the Isuzu UTE A-League semi-finals with a 1-0 win over rivals Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park.

Sydney keeper Harrison Devenish-Meares was the star down one end, keeping his 12th clean sheet for the season, while striker Patrick Wood grabbed the deciding goal down the other.

Nishan Velupillay nearly opened the scoring inside two minutes, drawing a strong save from Devenish-Meares.

Devenish-Meares again made a fine save to get low to his right and deny Charles Nduka’s effort in the 18th minute.

Victory hearts were in their mouths when star midfielder Juan Mata looked to have collected Paul Okon-Engstler with a high boot while controlling the ball, however VAR cleared the incident.

Auckland break Melbourne City hearts in thrilling penalty shootout​


Auckland FC have booked their spot against Adelaide United in the Isuzu UTE A-League Semi-Finals after a gritty penalty shootout (7-6) win over Melbourne City on Saturday afternoon.

Middlesbrough were left to settle for a place in the Championship play-offs as their draw with Wrexham meant that the Welsh side missed out on a place in the top six.

Tommy Conway's 13th league goal of the season put the visitors in front early on at Stok Cae Ras.

Josh Windass levelled proceedings in sublime fashion with his 17th goal of the campaign across all competitions from a free-kick.

Sam Smith's bullet header completed the turnaround, although David Strelec equalised moments later to round off a frenetic opening half.

But the contest ended level, meaning Boro finished the campaign in fifth as Ipswich Town's victory over Queens Park Rangers ensured the Tractor Boys took second place.

Millwall ensured a third-placed finish in the Championship after beating relegated Oxford United 2-0 in their final day clash.

The Londoners' hopes of automatic promotion to the Premier League rested on Ipswich Town dropping points at home to Queens Park Rangers - but their 3-0 victory meant a play-off place for Alex Neil's side.

After wave after wave of pressure the hosts finally took a deserved first-half lead when Femi Azeez blasted past Jamie Cumming at his near post.

The winger hit the upright soon after, but made no mistake early in the second half as he fired in at the far post from close range.

Millwall dominated much of the game and looked comfortable apart from a late Mark Harris header that was well saved as they now prepare for a two-legged play-off semi final against sixth-placed Hull City.

Ipswich Town secured an immediate return to the Premier League as they defeated Queens Park Rangers 3-0 to seal the Championship's second automatic promotion spot.

Relegated 12 months ago after just four wins in their first top-flight season for 22 years, Kieran McKenna's side have bounced back straight away.

With matters in their own hands going into the last day, Ipswich knew that three points at Portman Road would nullify anything that promotion rivals Millwall or Middlesbrough could do.

Goals inside the first nine minutes from George Hirst and Jaden Philogene set them on their way before substitute Kasey McAteer added a late third to rubber-stamp matters as the Tractor Boys enjoyed a third promotion in four seasons under Northern Irishman McKenna in a special period for the Suffolk club.

This fixture completed a miserable end to the season for QPR as they finished with four straight losses and six without a win to end up 15th as they completed an 11th straight season in the second tier.

Heartbreak for Wrexham and Derby, who narrowly miss out. Wrexham drew 2-2 with Middlesbrough, while Derby fell to a 2-1 defeat against Sheffield United.

Millwall, Southampton, Middlesbrough and Hull all secure their places in the semi-finals, with Hull’s final-day 2-1 win sealing their spot.

The Welsh side were one goal away from qualifying for the promotion playoff but fell just short. Ryan Reynolds’ club were on a historic run of three straight promotions, but will just miss out on the chance to join the Premier League.

They miss out on the Championship play-offs on the final day to bring their Premier League aspirations to an end for this season

Man we are miles off. I thought this year was it. Luckily I've switched to my WT addiction instead and its good gear this sesason.

West Ham's Premier League survival hopes were dealt a major blow as Brentford reignited their European prospects with a 3-0 victory at Gtech Community Stadium.

With 18th-placed Tottenham not in action until Sunday, West Ham knew victory in west London would pile further pressure on Roberto de Zerbi's side before their trip to Aston Villa.

However, an own goal from Konstantinos Mavropanos and strikes from Igor Thiago and Mikkel Damsgaard condemned the Hammers to a heavy defeat which leaves them only two points above Spurs, who have a game in hand.

Brentford moved up to sixth, a point ahead of Brighton.

Newcastle United handed manager Eddie Howe a timely boost as they returned to winning ways against Brighton.

Although the head coach felt the support of those above him at the club's annual summit at Matfen Hall in Northumberland this week, he also faced some "difficult questions" following a torrid run of nine defeats in 12 in the league.

Howe needed a victory and, with chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan and minority owner Jamie Reuben both watching on from the directors' box, his side delivered against in-form Brighton.

Arsenal moved six points clear at the top of the Premier League with Bukayo Saka playing a starring role and Viktor Gyokeres taking his season's goal tally to 21 as they comfortably beat Fulham at Emirates Stadium.

Mikel Arteta's men took the chance to pile the pressure on title rivals Manchester City who have played two games fewer than the Gunners and are not in action until Monday when they visit Everton.

Arsenal went ahead in the ninth minute when Saka, making his first start since March after an Achilles injury, easily beat Raul Jimenez down the right and picked out Gyokeres to tap in from close range for his 20th goal of the campaign.

The Swedish striker then turned provider five minutes before the break when he slipped a pass into Saka and the England winger curled a quality low finish past Fulham keeper Bernd Leno at his near post.

Gyokeres then claimed his second on the night when he headed home Leandro Trossard's cross to wrap up the three points in first-half stoppage time.
