Leichhardt Oval news

And only balmain dinosaurs think Leichhardt is the 8th wonder.
It is the 8th Wonder and I have been to more games at the CSS because of the train station there I don't drink and drive

It's amazing ground to watch rugby league but you empty your bladder just before you turn up hit the bar in numbers I have a little plastic tray that holds the beers and just feel the electricity in the air great day

I've been to many many games at Campbelltown over the years where the atmosphere has been amazing. Also been to games there where its been super quiet. Same at Leichhardt ive been to games where its been great and others where you could hear a pin drop most of the game.

This idea that is getting pushed on here that there is never an atmosphere is just false.
I’ve been to over 30 matches at c town and never been there where I thought the place was bumping !
My experience begs to differ .
I’ve taken my son to over 10 matches there and not once could I refer to a time where I could say”see this is why going to the footy is fun “ .
I would say you and I have different ideas on what is a good atmosphere , for your statement to be true.
For reference I’ve been to A league games with 7000 people that had more engagement from the crowd . And I’m not a fan of soccer , and find the chanting overbearing after a while .
Maybe it’s because we have lost a lot the last 5 years , but I honestly don’t think so . I can’t remember a time when it wasn’t the case .
And I’ve been going to that joint since before Balmain merged with wests , as wests was my uncles team .
The place does an extremely poor job of engaging the fans and bringing them into the game .

I have been there many times too - although not recently since it became trendy to go there. Froze my butt standing on the hill - couldn't get in to the toilets, lines for food and drink which made the idea of getting either just a waste of time. If you are a masochist and in to third world conditions at the football then go for it. For me its just an outdated suburban league ground - far from any wonder of the world.

Major funding boost for iconic NRL ground

MSN Story by Ike Morris • Weds 14 May 2026

It is considered the eighth wonder of the world by local NRL fans, and now there is good news in sight for a historic Sydney sportsground in need of an urgent upgrade.

The federal government confirmed in Tuesday's budget that it would set aside $20m over the next two years to "upgrade and restore" Leichhardt Oval in Sydney's inner west, one of two home grounds for the Wests Tiger NRL team.

With a standard capacity of 20,000 spectators, the oval also hosts NRLW and Women's A-League matches, along with local amateur rugby league and soccer matches.

The funding is on top of $40m in joint funding between federal, state and local governments announced by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in June 2024 and will go towards increasing the seating capacity by 3000, building a new northern grandstand, adding new women's changerooms to cater for the growing number of women's sporting matches played at the ground, and improving corporate hospitality and media facilities.

Local sports fans have called for the funding boost in recent years as the ground's ageing facilities have entered disrepair. Former Tigers chief executive Shane Richardson threatened to boycott playing games at the ground in 2023 until more funding was allocated to improving the ground, which opened in 1934.

Speaking in 2024, Mr Albanese said the funding boost would continue to "be a hub" for the Tigers and for school, women's and girls' sport.

"Leichhardt Oval is a place where the faithful can go along and cheer their local sporting teams, and this funding from all three levels of government will ensure that spirit is preserved," he said.

Not a lot of detail in the MSN article.
Has this come out of the new Budget & is this being reported anywhere else.. Is the 3000 extra seats bring the total capacity up to 23,000?

Official capacity is currenly ~17k. with the refurbish it'll bring it up to 20k.

The extra $20M from the feds means we can do the more expensive of the two proposed designs submitted which means a roof on the northern grandstand and better corporates and facilities. This is a huge win for us.

Ideally, we will be playing 6 and 6 split (Leichhardt/Campbelltown) in 2029 after both stadiums have had their rebuilds. Or 5/5 if we keep Magic Round as a home and have the Easter game at Commbank.

Unlike the coalition and One Nation?
Come on , they are not in a position to break anything , here’s a few for u labour loving people
$275 dollar of ur electricity, instead has gone up hundreds
He took away the $1,500 tax rebate that we could claim
Now he is stealing from all of us who have managed to buy shares or a second house , Iam not rich bye any means but my shares dropped by 25% yesterday, all because of LYING ALBO
I guess there is more that I have forgotten

Hopefully it IS for a roof on that north end stand and hopefully they redesign it....reminds me of the old bleachers they brought to Orana...surely we can do better...it has to be done better because once its done we are stuck with it

agree the current design of that Northern stand is a bit basic. I know there isn't heaps of room down that end but it could still be more substantial. I'd like to see an improvement at the Southern end as well. the food and beer queues are ridiculous. I know the stand has a heritage constraints on it, but surely some design could work to incorporate the old with the new.

Would you prefer more seating or a roof with that additional funding? i think i would prefer more capacity.
