Rugby league history

Gary Dowling’s sister was a teacher at my primary school when he tragically died in a car accident aged only 30 in the 1980s
Used to share a few drinks occasionally on Friday nights with Gary at Johnnie Walkers Wine Bar in Sydney, never quite worked out if his death was accidental or intentional ?
Fairly deep character.

In February 1980, Victa Lawnmowers became Wests first major sponsor, and it couldn’t have come any sooner for the financially struggling club.

Wests lost John Dorahy, Les Boyd and Ray Brown to Manly.
Tom Raudonikis joined Newtown.

Remarkably, despite losing their four best players, the Magpies had an outstanding 1980 season, as Manly & Newtown watched the semifinals from the grandstand.

I remember they struggled financially through the 80's which was one of the reasons the moved to Campbelltown from my memories.

THE Staple for Sunday mornings in most Sydney households .

Rex Mossop would fire up and set the tone for the best sports show on the box .
Controversy Corner ran on Channel 7 as the final section of Sports world where Rex and the team would discuss “pertinent league matters”.

Stephenson really à pre cursor for
Hodgson at Canberra, both similar type of players, crafty and resilient.
PS I just checked Dr Google and found that Ashurst was at Penrith 74-76 and Stepho 74-78, but played less games, although he was player/ coach for a while.
Maybe that’s when the break up occurred ( I can’t remember the detail).
Phil Lowe also came out at the same time to play for Manly (74-76).

2 legends the late Scott Gale (RIP) and Steve Mortimer shake hands after the Preliminary Final which was played at the SCG, on the 21st September, 1986, where Canterbury prevailed over Balmain 28-16.

Brian Lockwood played for Balmain at the same time,a really great pommie tough and clever ball playing forward that England just don't have anymore.
