Some follow up, the Grand Final on September 4, 1943 between the same clubs resulted in a Newtown victory 34-7.
Crowd ( a record at the time) 60,992.

The 50,000-Seat Paddington Stadium That Never Was​

In the mid-1970s, NSWRL boss Kevin Humphreys tried to build a massive, 50,000-seat rectangular rugby league colosseum right at Trumper Park in Paddington.

Frustrated by the high hiring fees and oval shape of the SCG, the league wanted a state-of-the-art "Home of Rugby League" that would put roaring crowds right on top of the sidelines.

However, the dream of dropping a massive stadium into narrow, terrace-lined suburban streets sparked instant warfare.

Fierce backlash from local resident groups and Woollahra Council ultimately killed the project over traffic and gridlock fears, but the bitter battle laid the exact philosophical groundwork that eventually delivered the original Sydney Football Stadium in 1988.
