It’s not the same situation.
Tallyn was the clear number 2. He had been identified and worked on for quite a while. He and Api complimented each other and breaking their combination ruined how both played individually.

TDS had some huge issues defensively. At most clubs he would/should be sorting it out in reserve grade. The club recognised this, its just unfortunate the guys in his spot were actual reserve grade players

He did do that but was required in first grade for two reasons.
1. Api was dreadful when asked to go past 60
2. No one else could effectively relieve him and keep momentum going.

But to address your question, playing hooker and lock (in patches) evolves his understanding of those roles. When you are a half, the better you know those around you, the better you anticipate what to do and can make better choices.


Im not nitpicking, I'll discuss whatever you want.

Can you also share where its been quoted that he is putting on size to transition to lock? I believe that may have been one of the options on the cards (according to the forum) whilst luai was here and if Latu kept getting injuries - because in the best interest of any team, you cant build your team around a bloke who plays 12 games a season. But i never heard this from anyone of note.

Interesting. Benji has always said that Latu will end up in the halves though.

Then TDS leaving was both the sign of an incompetent club unable to properly build and roster and manage their young talent AND an entitled kid who was unwilling to bide his time and develop in reserve grade. Both things are true in this case IMO.

Think that’s when he was down in the dumps, constant injuries making him consider being a bench player.

Last presser of the season Benji did say they've always seen him as a half, doubt must have clouded that during the season with the constant setbacks.

He wasn't available till Rd 4 and had hardly played any footy since last season and at that point Madden deserved to hold his position given our results - he was getting praise from everywhere for his performances - after winning games against the Warriors Eels Knights best start we have had to a season.
Latu on the other hand by his own admission was struggling with confidence due to setbacks which explains why he wasn't automatically picked ahead of anyone.
 
Coming off the bench is one thing, Coming on to play hooker/lock is another. Especially with how brittle he is. If he needed confidence he should have been playing KOE Cup. Can anyone think of anything of note he did playing hooker/lock? Yet he came on in the second half in the last round playing at 7 and looked smooth as silk. Maybe he’d have gotten his confidence back a lot sooner if he was just allowed to play his natural game.
 
Latu has been abysmally managed this year. I like his attitude that he will play wherever he is asked to, that's a good team-first mentality but it's detrimental to his development as he got shelved to the bench to be this catch all fill in.

It'd have been better for him to ply his trade in second grade and get some consistency in one position especially if our dullard head coach thinks he is to be a future half back.

Yeah sometimes I get the feeling we were giving him a spot in the 17 just to make them happy the two boys are playing NRL together, but their development is on a different trajectory and require different strategies. Sam needs to play NRL for his development every week. Latu needs to play half every week what ever level that is. It’s not rocket science.

And there’s no way that chubby little kid is a lock.

Its not really a question of what the player would prefer to be doing, but what is best for their development.

Its promising that Haywood hasnt thrown the toys out after Brailey signed.

Cool story. He was told Api was being re-signed, what do you expect him to do? He did what every player has ever done in that situation. He moved to a club with a clearer path to first grade. Do you think Isiah Iongi was entitled because Penrith had Dylan Edwards? How about Averillo? Is he entitled because Herbie and Bostock were ahead of him? No. He wants a clearer path. What about Luke Metcalf? Is he entitled because he moved to the Dragons too be able to play first grade? It’s apart of the game.

I expect him to aim up and earn his spot. Api is clearly still the better player.
