WWII uncovered: Honouring Reg Saunders: The First Aboriginal Australian to be Commissioned as an Officer in the Australian Army.

Reginald "Reg" Walter Saunders was the first Aboriginal Australian to be commissioned as an officer in the Australian Army. The son of a First World War veteran, Saunders was born in western Victoria on 7 August 1920 and brought up by his grandmother.

Reg Saunders passed away on 2 March 1990 in Canberra and was cremated with Anglican rites. His ten children survived him. The AWM holds his medals and his portrait by Pamela Thalben-Ball. In 1992 the RSL established a scholarship in his name for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women.

Captain Saunders was 69 years old at the time of his passing.

Today marks 10 years since Ford ended Australian manufacturing.

On the 7th of October 2016, the final Ford Falcon rolled off the line at Broadmeadows Assembly Plant, bringing an end to one of the greatest cars ever built and a 56 year rivalry with Holden.

48 years ago, 6 October 1978 - Johnny O'Keefe, who has often been called the undisputed King of Australian Rock 'n' Roll with twenty-nine Top 40 hits to his credit in Australia between 1959 and 1974, died following a heart attack induced by an accidental overdose of prescribed drugs.
He was 43.

John Michael O'Keefe (19 January 1935 – 6 October 1978) was an Australian rock and roll singer whose career began in the 1950’s. Some of his hits include "Wild One" (1958), "Shout!" and "She's My Baby". In his twenty-year career, O'Keefe released over fifty singles, 50 EPs and 100 albums. O'Keefe was also a radio and television entertainer and presenter.

Often referred to by his initials "J.O.K." or by his nickname "The Wild One", O'Keefe was the first Australian rock 'n' roll performer to tour the United States, and the first Australian artist to make the local Top 40 charts and he had twenty-nine Top 40 hits in Australia between 1959 and 1974.
