OFFICIAL Jarome Luai - #295

Yes, Jarome Luai is a confident rugby league player:

  • Confidence in himself
Luai has said that he has supreme confidence in himself and his team. He also said that he doesn't view pressure the same as others and sees it as an opportunity.

  • Confidence in his teammates
Luai's teammates have said that he gives them confidence and energy on the field. One teammate said that Luai is always backing them and is always there to give them a spray if they need it.

  • Confidence in his ability to make the Tigers more lethal
Luai's stint as halfback can make the Tigers more lethal by leveraging off his new-found confidence.

  • Confidence in his ability to be a leader
Luai is ready to be a leader as he heads to a Wests Tigers team that's trying to avoid their own kind of four-peat with the wooden spoon in 2025.

Cmon.

Look we can punt Toa, he always seemed Fringe-graderish. Naden too lets see.
However we can't just rewrite our backline. Just pay out Naden, Staines, Toa along with Sullivan (700K HOW?) and Bateman!

Sullivan and Bateman alone is likely going to be 1m of our cap Gone.

Plus we replace our unreliables, with newbies who haven't got first grade experience?

Nope. We need to ask instead, how come players like Staines and Naden are not performing here. What about Turuva, how do we keep his conditioning at the same standard as Penrith?

Wayne Bennett said it best "you can afford to loose someone, as long as their replacement is an upgrade". Or in this case, can we afford to lose Staines/Toa/Naden and be sure we get someone worthy in their place?

Not arguing that people shouldn't be cut, I just want to know we will have a team and not a spoon at the end of it.
I don't think we lose 1 millin of our cap each year by letting Bateman and Sullivan go.

Bateman we cover about 300k a season. Mabe 350.

Sullivan we cover 300k a season.

total is around 600-650k.

If you factor in some players that play for us while being paid by other clubs, it probably all comes out in the wash. Taylan May is on 600k. We were going to pay Stefano 800k. Olam is being subsidised still I think. Jack Bird is on low value etc. Once you start going through it, we aren't going too bad. We needed the spots to get through this season.

Next year we will have lots of contracts expiring and we'll be able to balance the squad in the right areas.

To celebrate the release of the 2024 Official Rugby League Annual, historian David Middleton has picked his top five NRL players of the year.

Jarome Luai

Based on his 2024 efforts, Jarome Luai might be getting better with age, a statement that will be music to the ears of Wests Tigers fans. The 26-year-old is preparing for the biggest challenge of his career, to help restore the fortunes of the Tigers after three consecutive wooden spoons and 13 years without a finals appearance.

He will start with his new club at the peak of his powers. Luai was a key figure in the Panthers’ fourth consecutive premiership title, played a vital role in the Blues’ historic series victory in State of Origin and then showed his leadership qualities as captain of an inexperienced Samoa side in two Tests against England.

After a Round 12 game against Cronulla in 2024, Panthers’ coach Ivan Cleary described Luai’s kicking game as β€œthe best it’s ever been tonight”. It was a comment that could have been repeated on subsequent occasions as Luai’s kicking continued to produce results.

He held the Panthers together during Nathan Cleary’s absence and was integral to the team continuing to produce winning results. And it wasn’t just his kicking game that ranked among the best in the competition. His ball play and deceptive footwork reached elite levels.

In the grand final Luai broke eight tackles and worked in partnership with Cleary to grind down the Storm’s defensive game through their constant changes of direction.

He was also a major figure in the Blues’ success in Origin, launching the raid that led to Bradman Best’s try which broke open the Origin decider at Suncorp. There had not been a try scored for the first 64 minutes of Game 3 until Luai spotted the barest of openings and darted through before passing to Best for the key try in the contest. The Blues went on to win a decider in Brisbane for the first time since 2005.

And on Samoa’s historic two-Test tour of England at the end of the season, Luai’s leadership qualities came to the fore among an inexperienced squad. Although his team was well beaten in both Tests, Luai still managed to wow crowds at Wigan and Leeds with his array of skills.

Luai may never face a bigger challenge than the one that will confront him at the Tigers in 2025. The fanbase is desperate to see improvement and the pressure to deliver results will be intense. But through his actions on and off the field, the Tigers look to have the best man to lead the fightback.

That mural depiction should never have been unveiled, and whoever approved it punted immediately.

Pretty amateurish haha. Haymes Paints commissioned
the artist (who is working on his portfolio of work)
most probably, but it's nice. Everyone respects Jermoe

It is terrible, with the fact that others are posting about Gladstone Small proving just that. He literally has provided no neck whatsoever as showing and Luai's left shoulder is up at ear level.

Also laughable that this has been presented to celebrate the arrival of inarguably the best available NRL signing and extension of the partnership with Zurich.
