Taylan is a no brainer for us if he ticks the boxes.https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/s...y/news-story/6626c41f2c9ba64539aaf682cd00ffd4
Wayne Bennett confirms interest in former Panthers star Taylan May
Taylan May could soon be back in the NRL, with South Sydney coach Wayne Bennett confirming the club is interested in bringing the former Penrith star to Redfern.
South Sydney supercoach Wayne Bennett has confirmed his interest in Taylan May as the troubled former Panthers star edges closer to an NRL return.
This masthead can reveal May has interest from three clubs, including an English Super League outfit, as the controversial three-quarter looks to resurrect his rugby league career.
The Rabbitohs have emerged as a possible destination for May, with Bennett revealing he is open to throwing the 23-year-old winger or centre a lifeline for a Redfern revival.
The Samoan Test star toured South Sydney’s facilities earlier this week.
And while no deal has been signed at this stage, Bennett says he is in the process of exploring a second chance for May.
“Yes, we’re talking to his management,” Bennett said.
“We wouldn’t be talking to his management if there wasn’t some interest, but we’re just in the stage of talking to him at the moment.
“We’re trying to work things out at the moment.
So we’ll know more next week after we tick a few boxes.”
May was sacked by the Panthers last year following a string of off-field incidents which prompted the four-time premiers to sever ties with the promising outside back.
At the time, May was fighting domestic violence charges and was subject to the NRL’s no-fault stand-down policy, but those charges were dropped in March.
That has opened the door for the prospect of a comeback pending any May deal being rubber-stamped by the NRL’s integrity unit.
May’s manager Ahmad Merhi confirmed several clubs have expressed interest and is confident the tryscoring three-quarter will be approved to play again by the NRL.
“Souths are an option,” Merhi said.
“He has three clubs looking at him and Souths are one of those options.
“Taylan definitely wants to play again.
“He is not subject to any NRL stand-down at the moment and there’s nothing pending on him, so we’ll leave it with the NRL.
“If and when they get a registered contract they can make a decision from there (on whether May returns to the NRL).”
May made his NRL debut for Penrith in 2021 and has scored 17 tries from 30 games, headlined by a breakout 2022 campaign that saw him cross 16 times from 21 appearances.
Bennett is no stranger to saving and rebuilding careers – the NRL Hall-of-Fame coach lured NSW superstar Latrell Mitchell to South Sydney in 2020 after his contract bust-up with the Roosters.
Bennett tried to sign former Warriors prop Russell Packer, who served time in jail, to the Broncos in 2015 and a year later, he issued a lifeline to Matt Lodge at Brisbane following his New York rampage.
May has also been linked with the Wests Tigers in a move that could see him reunite with brother Terrell, who joined the joint venture club this season from the Roosters.
May told Channel 9 he is reformed individual after spending time in a psychiatric ward as he battled suicidal thoughts.
“I feel like I came out of it totally different,” he said.
“I got suicidal and I think that’s fair to say. It’s not a sob story, it’s how I felt.
“It was probably the best thing that could have happened for me, it opened my eyes up to a lot of things – a day in a psych ward felt like a week.
“My name was unknown in the psych ward and I was happy to come out and be unknown. I just didn’t like the person that Taylan was.
“My mindset has changed, my beliefs have changed and I’m a whole different person now.”

Yeah well most teenagers don't even know if they want to be a girl or a boy these days....You really are outta the loop eh col...its not 1985 anymore
Pretty sure I can imagine … just like everyone else who supports the club. You’re right you do deserve your opinion , which is why I’d never ever compare you to Tucker ! Because he’s just a troll!Combined with the Magpies, I’ve supported this club since I was 10, and gone through emotions you couldn’t even imagine. I’ve earned the right to say what I want about this club, as has anyone else who has invested so much emotion and energy into it.
Maybe we are in for him . Maybe we offered him league minimum and he’s testing his value in the market place .Taylan is a no brainer for us if he ticks the boxes.
The fact that we're not in for him is 1 of 2 things IMO:
- They met him and he's an absolute head case who they believe will mess up again
- There is another centre we have signed already
If it's the former, it's strange that Wayne Bennett seems okay with him.
Being honest isn’t deathriding. I’ve actually been more positive this year than in recent years. That doesn’t mean there aren’t things that piss you off. One of those things is how frustrating it is not having an established coach. Even if we have improved a little this year. It’s still weighing us down, whether people want to admit it or not.Pretty sure I can imagine … just like everyone else who supports the club. I’m just saying stop death riding the club . For your own sake as much as anyone else . We are 5 and 6 , 500. If we get the win!
I feel like there’s a lot of residue with you with Benji with how he left the 1st time .
Anyways! Just to be clear I don’t view you anything like Tucker . I’ve made it very clear what I think of him ..
Are they happy tissues or Sad tissues?Sad world if liking a post is considered bullying, I'll buy lachie a box of tissues
We've had established coaches. It never made a difference. The issues at the club are deeper than that. Ownership and resources being the main two and they go hand in hand.Being honest isn’t deathriding. I’ve actually been more positive this year than in recent years. It depends if it was in our control or out of it....and the second part of what I said?
Performing a lessons learned session is not always a happy excercise.
You don’t reckon 2 former head coaches as assistants isn’t reducing the load ? .Being honest isn’t deathriding. I’ve actually been more positive this year than in recent years. $180k at last reportWe really need Richo to come out and clarify our position moving forward. Pretty disappointing if we've only walked away with $165k from this whole debacle.
I love Benji, and I want him to succeed. But I just can’t help but think he’s got himself in too deep sometimes. You don’t reckon 2 former head coaches as assistants isn’t reducing the load ? .
When you look at a lot of the teams staff there’s heaps of ex nrl players form not that long ago taking up assistant roles .
There’s not too many “served their time , and earnt a spot “ assistant coaches .
Guys like , Boyd corner , Ben Teo , heighno ,cayless , etc . As most people say , as a head coach the role has changed to man managing , and all the off field stuff .
The actual X and O is Morris and Hodgo . And I think they’re doing thier job.
My biggest stuff ups from Benji . Deciding to go for the softly softly approach last year . Which he acknowledges and looks to have fixed .
And going all in on a rat like Galvin . If caused soo much friction , and drama over the lat 2 years , for him to bad mouth him on his way out … I mean …. The second one is like the mate who’s dating a chick who’s cheating on him . It’s hard to not say I told you so … but you just feel bad for the guy , and how much effort he put in .
