Claws Out Podcast

He also said he stays out of recruitment. I'd imagine...and maybe I'm wrong...that he needs to understand who we are talking to, what money needs to be made available and a discussion ensues with the board in case of any objections.

He ultimately signs off on the contracts, not recruitment, so he will have some level of involvement, but I doubt he's helping to pick the players.
Yeah exactly. That’s my concern. I know Gallant does the juniors but Benji doing most of our senior recruitment is just odd. What other Head Coach is responsible for recruitment as well? Like I said NRL clubs have experienced teams working with them on these decisions.

It’s a bit concerning we won’t have a salary cap manager, recruitment team or a GM of football. This worked for Richo because he had the experience for it all and even then he got Mielekamp in for the GM role. Not sure Benji should be responsible for recruitment either he should be focusing on coaching with a say in who we bring in. Other NRL clubs have experienced teams in their fields for these types of things ?
Why do we always run on skeleton staff.
Lack of investment from our "owners"....only so far you can stretch $1.7m.

Hmm not sure, I know he said he was not involved in the Benji coach extension, cant recall he said he stays out of recruitment perhaps paws out can confirm

He did say a few times he is dealing with player managers for example has good relationship with issac mosses

I think you need the Coach the the Gm of football and who ever is running the club should be involved in recruitment with the coach having the biggest say

The GM of football should be looking after and planning from today until 7 years in front having a eye on the top 14/15 year old kids and his job should be having a pipeline of quality kids coming in to replace current first grade players and running a healthy football department
Yep but Shaun said is doing both roles GM and CEO. I think that set up could be fine with the right person. Say for example that cricket fella we had in the role, how much value do we think he had or does it show the club does not have much importatance or use for the role, could be redundant

I know Shaun mentioned a few times he loves building pathways and talks to the managers so id say its him and he wants that set up

Ivan had full control when he was with us I believe

Nice get. Would rather listen to Richo to be honest. Like Shaun said if the NRL team can have a bumper year and break the finals drought, everything else will fall into place.

Actions speak louder than words, bring on the footy.

With a new board expected for Wests Tigers this month , Shaun will be a HBG puppet as the boards will be stacked by HBG they will have control of both and what comes down from HBg will be applied at Wests Tigers untill PVL comes knocking again , the muppets at HBG will try again to control everything ,
you got the winning lotto numbers for saturday night.

I'm making the distinction that dealing with player managers and picking the recruitment targets are different things.

He may well talk to Moses and even be in the meetings, but I doubt he makes the suggestions.

Yeh

I guess footy staff of the likes

Benji
Morris
hodgson
HINO
benji snd the WNRL are on good terms now could help
Mighty mouse
Unconfirmed if SM helping out
The reserve grade coach

Could be seen there's enough people to help out

I guess my point is just because its the norm to have a GM of footty now doest mean its needed in every footy club less is more sometimes or however the saying goes

I don’t think Benji would want anyone else involved no matter how much money we had to spend.
I could be wrong, but I don’t think many if any other NRL coaches are given as much control over retention and recruitment as what Benji currently has.
I think it’s a good thing as he doesn’t need to argue, justify, kick or scream to get what he wants and he can’t blame anyone else if it doesn’t work out.
Obviously if the results go bad we will have many people pointing fingers asking why we give Be hi so much control, that’s the risk you take I suppose.

If he criticised HBG he would need to answer to them and likely be out of a job.
If he defended HBG he would get offside with our supporters who are against HBG.
His only logical option is the stay neutral on that topic.
Love him or hate him, Richo danced to his own tune. Hopefully SM learned a thing or two.
