Claws Out Podcast

As he alluded he self made from the street mt druitt and had a tough upbringing so he not some harved scholar with elbow pads just talking fluff hes walk the walk by the sounds of it
Talking about you not him. You responded to my post with a comment that didn't match my post content in any way. Just some throwaway line...let the footy do the talking.

I never spoke about his upbringing or the way he strings sentences together. Simply that he dodged the questions that people care about when asked.

You can't be about fan engagement then refuse to engage on the big issues.

You say he wasn't talking fluff? For me it was only fluff...tell me one thing of substance that was said please 🙏 I must have missed that part.

Your statement was vague too if you're giving an English lesson

It’s likely too confidential for Shaun or anyone else to reveal, but it would be very interesting to know our process on contract values for retention and recruitment.
I know most NRL clubs have a salary cap manager which is good in theory, but sounds like a waste of money as surely you don’t need a specific person spending 36-40hrs per week solely on balancing our salary cap.
Based on Shaun’s comments it sounds like Benji with the assistance of Shannon Gallant are solely in charge of retention and recruitment and I assume they are also in charge of balancing the salary cap, possibly overseen by Shaun.
So I’m assuming Benji pretty much has full control with Shannon Gallant throwing a few ideas into the mix, particularly surrounding younger up and coming players which is his area of expertise and Shaun simply keeping check and making them aware how it all fits and balances with the salary cap.
What retention or recruitment decisions would be required to go to board level ?
Maybe anything above 500k ?
Even when retention and recruitment reaches board level, why would any board including ours question what the football department are wanting to do, it would be more of an FYI and simply show them how it all fits in to the salary cap wouldn’t it ?
If anyone thinks or knows it works differently to how I have described above, please comment as I would be genuinely interested to know.

My read is the boards in particular HBG new members would like to exert themselves more in this regard so its likely SM and the board players making final decisions.

In the past I have no trust in Benji recruitment and team selections have historically done my head in so I hope their is appropriate governance

If they appointed someone else in that role coult be too many cooks in the kitchen

HBG have said they don't want to be involved in any football department decisions.

If any of what you say is true, then they have not held to that comment and would be another reason to boot them all.

A salary cap manager simply works the numbers. They don't pick players. Just tell the recruitment team how much money they have to work with.

It’s a bit concerning we won’t have a salary cap manager, recruitment team or a GM of football. This worked for Richo because he had the experience for it all and even then he got Mielekamp in for the GM role. Not sure Benji should be responsible for recruitment either he should be focusing on coaching with a say in who we bring in. Other NRL clubs have experienced teams in their fields for these types of things ?
Why do we always run on skeleton staff.

Yeah i know.
Everythings hunky dory now???

Now Richos gone
I really don't want to be negative, but we are going to be fed so much shit dressed as Nutella under this regime and Shaun will just be running cover for HBG incompetence. Seems the tactics is to swerve and answer a question no one asked.

Pascoe was trashed as the problem and maybe he played his part, but in hindsight, the bloke was on a gag order and played the HBG puppet part very well. To the extent he was blamed 100% for the failures. In reality, he was handcuffed.

The cat is out of the bag now, so Shaun won't cop the same heat, but he, in my opinion, is the mouthpiece and is willingly avoiding the major issues at the club.

HBG only care about a CEO that executes their decisions. They aren't interested in a CEO with a plan and allowing him to execute.

I hope I'm wrong, but the decisions may not even affect us this season. As we've seen, it's just a slow and steady decline and we wake up 10 years later with no finals and 3 wooden spoons. It's a disgrace.

Shaun mentioned he is doing the talking with the player managers so sounds like he wants to do that stuff himself

SM is still interim CEO.

His employment contract is still GM. They can't hire a new GM unless his title is changed officially.

As for salary cap manager, maybe Debbie from accounts does it?

He also said he stays out of recruitment. I'd imagine...and maybe I'm wrong...that he needs to understand who we are talking to, what money needs to be made available and a discussion ensues with the board in case of any objections.

He ultimately signs off on the contracts, not recruitment, so he will have some level of involvement, but I doubt he's helping to pick the players.

Wouldnt surprise me

I think you need the Coach the the Gm of football and who ever is running the club should be involved in recruitment with the coach having the biggest say

The GM of football should be looking after and planning from today until 7 years in front having a eye on the top 14/15 year old kids and his job should be having a pipeline of quality kids coming in to replace current first grade players and running a healthy football department
