Mexico beat Ecuador to win their first men's World Cup knockout stage match since 1986.

Goals from Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez - the two scorers in Mexico's 2-0 victory in their World Cup opener against South Africa - earned their country a place in the last 16, where they will face either England or DR Congo in Mexico City on July 5.

From the high of their win over Germany, Ecuador, who finished the game with 10 men following Piero Hincapie's red card for covering his mouth in a situation of confrontation, come back down to earth at a raucous Estadio Azteca.

Piero Hincapie becomes the second player to be shown a red card for covering his mouth in a situation of confrontation as Ecuador's World Cup campaign ends on a low note.
The Arsenal defender was shown a straight red following a VAR check.

France look the goods .. Mbappe has the ball on a string .. he looks like he's gonna score every time he touches the ball.

Look at the top goal scorers in this tournament ..
Lionel Messi - Argentina - 6
Kylian Mbappe - France - 6
Erling Haaland - Norway - 5
Ousmane Dembele - France - 4
Vinicius Junior - Brazil - 4

No wonder these countries are doing well .. 🙂

I thought this was interesting. Most of the big pundits are picking Egypt to win, probably because of the quality of Mo Salah.

They also seem to think we'll play a conservative game, a 3-2-5 formation, which is the safer option against Egypt.

I'd go for 3-2-4-1 to get our best players on the pitch and go in attack mode.

Champion @innsaneink, sounds crazy but:

Under IFAB and FIFA rules, a player who covers their mouth with their hand, arm, or shirt during a confrontational situation with an opponent is subject to an immediate red card.

And there's now been 2 red cards at the world cup for this "offence."

I'd prefer Toure up front I think.

Only other change I'd potentially have is Delpato out wide & play Metcalfe beside Irvine. (well, more like a diamond formation in midfield with Metcalfe in behind Toure, Irankunda & Delpato wider Irvine playing deeper.)

But Delpato off the bench gives us something extra if we need to break it open later.
