He is the best thing that has happened to this club. We have our centre of excellence coming along nicely, we are in the best financial position we have ever been in, the toxicity in the club is gone believe it or not, we have hired two very successful coaches one after the other, we have our lower grades performing very well, etc.

Yet none of you are happy…

Lets bring back Grant Mayer, right?

Yep expressed this today and got hammered , also have thought the membership Dept has also improved, being Financal will be a huge factor in the not to distant future as the pressure mounts on clubs to financially survive independently.

The pressure will be on us to relocate because we are the NRL’s laughing stock. Managers don’t even let us know when we’ve been brushed for the wooden spooners.

No point having money if players don’t want a bar of you.

It just goes to show what we all know that the playing group is mentally fragile.. no amount of coaching can in-still that into individuals..

No matter how talented or skilful… Mentality comes from within.. no words can unlock it.. you can become resilient but only do it yourself.

It’s a generational thing IMO.. everyone gets a ribbon..

I’m not saying that isn’t true … Because it clearly is , but if it’s a generational thing , why is it only affecting Places like the tigers . The storm , they don’t recruit the best players all the time , like Nico Hynes is a prime example of this . He just wanted it more . Do we search for the exceptions not the rule ? If a whole generation are fragile , how do you find resilience ? Do we just recruit a little lower on the natural talent but A plus on the mental aptitude ?

This has to be What Adam Hartigan, Kimmorley , Tim Sheens and Madge would be having conversations about .
**For me , I’d look to America . Thier aptitude testing is another level . And the prima Donna egos floating around the NRL , are nothing compared to an NFL locker room . “The Patriots way” has to be something that’s looked into , as they do exactly what the storm do . Identify talented players , but ones with a real hard edge .**
How they do that , I have NO idea . But if we could tap into that knowledge stream , even just a little bit , it would go a long way to get us out this mess I reckon .

As a Patriots fan ive been talking about mentality on this forum for a number of years now.

Its an art to recruit mentality over pure talent. You still need talent but mentality is what wins championships.

We have about 5 players out of our 30 who may have it, the rest are lacking.

As Bill Belichick is quoted saying

“Talent sets the floor, character sets the ceiling” .

Every recruit should be looked at in this light.

TPJ for instance is not the right type of player. he has the talent so he has the floor. Trouble is it is widely regarded that he hasnt achieved his ceiling. he never will if he doesnt have the character.

I've wanted to write something similar to this before, this is an excellent observation, you've hit the nail on the head. ?

The most worrying thing I saw was how Madge was constantly relaying messages to tell the team to push up in defence, push up in attack to support , etc.
All basic things I don't understand why this needs to be constantly drummed into them.
Seems to me we need a strong , vocal leader in our forward pack.


Right...... seriously, kids get that sort of thing, up in defence, pressure on kicker etc etc drummed into them constantly from when they're little tackers.

Do first graders really need the coach to remind them to move up in a line, pressure the play makers, slide if you need to... etc - therein lies our problem probably - I wonder if Bellamy and Robinson for example sit there constantly relating messages to move up in defence.....

I would doubt Bellyache/Robbo have to mate. We are clearly lacking enough footy smarts across the team to lead and inspire with all these small aspects of the game that just have to get done if you're going to be competitive at elite level! Blows my mind that they need such 'leadership' but it's becoming increasingly obvious that's the case.

I thought that doco didnt show much of anything, or not anything unknown at least.

I thought it showed how much Madge is trying to build the players up. You can't just drop everyone that doesn't perform, you have to try to fix their problems and make them better.

He is trying to get them to believe they can win, believe they can fight back when things are not going their way. He can't do that and be honest in post match press conferences. He has to praise even the smallest achievements and not humiliate them when they are terrible.

He is talking to each player, giving them simple direction before the games.

I think it also showed how much Madge has to do himself. Like many have said on here before and after the doco, he needs some competent help.

I think it could be just the way he carries himself, but Pascoe appears flippant. He could just be nonchalant type.

Back in the late 90's a mate of mine trained a horse that was near enough favourite for the Melbourne Cup and the ABC ran a multi-part series following his preparation over a couple of months.

In the end the horse ran mid-field. He always regretted putting himself in the position where effectively he increased the pressure on himself and the stable.

Pretty sure the horse didn't care.
