2005 Grand Final most watched.....

I'm probably bringing up old news but I was reading this morning the Tigers v Cowboys GF in 2005 was the most viewed Rugby League match on TV ever!
Origin on Wednesday night could possibly break it.
Quote;

"Yet the ARL Commission remains optimistic the Origin decider could surpass the 2005 grand final between the Wests Tigers and Cowboys as the most viewed match since the OzTAM ratings system was introduced back in 2001.

On that occasion, an average audience of 2.56 million viewers across the five capital cities was recorded."

U learn something new everyday I guess.

Shows what happens when the rules encourage attacking football instead of wrestling…

I might be a tad bias but I do believe it was the best brand/type of league ever played, it's being going downhill ever since

I think the 2005 GF was the last GF played at later night. The year after we moved to afternoon/evening games from memory. This had an effect on ratings.

I think the papers are a bit off about the figures though, certainly later GFs already surpassed 2005 as they were trumpeting certain GFs as the most watched ever only a year or so ago.

Does not really surprise me. Reflects a couple of things:

1\. Speed of the game was quicker &;
2\. 2005 was the year of the fairytale for both Wests Tigers and North Queensland.

You will find that both teams are generally viewed by many fans as their "second" team. In 2005 Sydney and Brisbane would have rated through the heavens for this reason.

Probably should also consider what had gone before them:

2002 - 2004: Roosters in every GF

and then what followed:

2006: Melbourne would have dragged ratings
2007 & 2008: Melbourne & Manly…..a ratings nightmare.
2009: Again Melbourne
2010: This is the one GF that could have rivaled 2005 with two Sydney teams. However, they lose the Brisbane market
2011: Manly and NZ....almost as bad as Manly and Melbourne

2006 and 2007 grand finals were both played at night too. manly's 40-nil win in 2008 was the first afternoon/evening kick off

i prefer night GF

Any particular reason?
Because in my opinion there is no comparison, day grand finals are much better.
For one thing during the day you will usually get a better quality game. It's also great getting together with family/friends for a Grand Final BBQ then going out after the game. As for night Grand Finals some kids might not be able to stay awake for the whole thing. Also, with day games you also get a better lead up on game day.

I'm opposed to the twilight GF. It just seems lazy. Like not quite day not quite night. I'd rather they either have it at 3.00 or at 8.00 like they used to do.

With that said it begs the question, what two teams could rate through the roof on a GF??

Whenever I have Christmas with a certain family member we always crack out the 2005 GF DVD after lunch. Then proceed to cheer and shout like we are watching it live. Perfect post X-mas lunch activity!

Exactly since 2005 the game has gone backwards aka wrestle etc… And this is reflected in the ratings

sat night GF would be really awesome imo. having NSW cup gf, toyota cup etc during the arvo.. then a pre game entertainment.. then sttarting it at night time.. carrying on post match entertainment till late night.. <– something u cant do on sunday arvo GF

also, as someone else mentioned the time between 4-6.. not evening not arvo.. i hate the lighting during that time lol... just my opinion though

Really good point Lat

You are always going to get better ratings for a night GF

Maybe it should be trialled at about 5.00pm Would allow people working Sundays time to get home in time in the future

NSW have a public holiday after the Sunday GF, which helps. Word is QLD was trying to move or create a new public holiday to the same weekend.

Cows fading huh The cows can't get up in time and get lost on the way to the dairy in the dark and the paint on our houses fades more

The problem with cows are they are from NSW and are just bloody stupid :laughing:
