Why are we struggling in the race to 10,000, where are all our so called supporters? The wests tigers facebook page alone has 11,000 fans, every time i make the trip down to sydney i can't walk into a bar without bumping into a tiger fan and yet we are pushing the grand total of 3,890\. I just don't understand why we are getting doubled by souths, surely there are more fans out there. I live in Brisbane and always get ticketed membership just because i believe in financially supporting our club. How are we meant to demand our club make the top 8 if we can't even make the top 8 supported clubs? There are 750 members of this site, is everyone here a member? Anyway sorry if this sounds like a rant, i just wish we were a little bit better supported, if anyone can explain to me why we can't produce the numbers or how we can find some more that would be great.

if the 4500 number is correct, getting many more would be difficult.
Our average home crowd last year was 17943
Conservatively subtract 20% as opposition supporters, leaving you with 14300
Now ask yourself how many of those 14300 would be super keen fans willing to fork out $$$ to go to many games?

Suddenly 4500 (or 31%) looks pretty good.

it's closer 5,000 members we were never going to get 10,000 lets face it. If we do well and start well this year I think you will see the numbers go up. alot of fence sitters who have been disillusioned with the last 4 years.

Also it's a lot of money to fork out, i've become a member this year for the first time

What is the most we have ever had?

I think we were struggling to get over 3000 the last few years. But I'm not sure if the numbers can be confirmed anywhere.

We have done well really, but we were never going to get over 10,000.

After reading this Topic - I rang a few mates and we have added 6 to the Member numbers!

I generally get to 15 odd games a season.
Money is getting tighter for most, me included but hey my life revolves around the 3 F's:
Family
Friends
&
Footy
So why not combine the 3 and get guaranteed time with all 3 and get yourself a membership!
A Sunday arvo with the wife and kids in their colours, a couple of good mates, a game of footy and a Brew in your hands!

Is that enough motivation?
Should be!

AFL clubs have no problem pulling in 40,000ish members, we should have no problem pulling in 10,000 with our fan base. People are just tight…

Difference in culture as well.

Leagues clubs as a general rule focussed on income through gate receipts and sales at the clubs themselves of alcohol and especially the poker machine market.

AFL Clubs focussed on membership. It is a tradition throughout entire generations of a family in some cases and the NRL has a long way to catch up to this culture of ticketed membership

I agree, but there is a big difference:

In AFL:
- teams only play at one ground which is located in the best position, easily accessed and has good facilities
- teams are traditional, tribal
- membership offers voting rights

in NRL:
- teams play all over the world for an extra buck
- teams are "brands", not local or tribal as this "limits marketing potential" (clearly not in the AFL though)
- "membership" is just a fancy name for "season ticket"; no voting rights

there are a lot of factors at play, including the fact that NSW's GST is being filtered off to Victoria and QLD meaning that basic infrastructure around grounds isn't improving, making games unattractive to those that arn't mad-keen supporters or locals.

Unlike in Melbourne were it's a simple tram ride into town where the MCG is right next to everything else! Pubs, Bars, Shops, Transport, Entertainment.

…yet people can't see the advantage of a Metro in Sydney; they can't see the advantage of having a network that enables anyone to travel to anywhere else in the city with complete ease.

If I got voting rights, I'd buy a Membership.

Yeah fair points. I guess if the NRL can lay a solid platform of members in the next few years than we can bank on the "family tradition" type of future the AFL currently enjoys.

Interestingly enough I hear that most AFL clubs are down on memberships this season, so the NRL is catching up slowly!

you are right

if crowd averages continue to rise like they have been, then it won't be long before the clubs really start making cash.
With the salary cap FINALLY evening out teams, everyone is going to be in with a chance. That can only be a good thing!

1998 - 10935
1999 - 13937
2000 - 14366
2001 - 13256
2002 - 13084
2003 - 14469
2004 - 14671
2005 - 16468
2006 - 15600
2007 - 15750
2008 - 15591
2009 - 16065

Kul - A metro in Syd is only good if it gets you to places you want to go. We are limited by the fact that almost all heavy train trips need to go Via Central…. Anyway we digress.

I have not renewed my 2 Memberships this year as I only managed 2 of 6 games last year with my Eldest (6yrs old). He loved the day but he gets a bit bored sitting in the one spot....Then there are night games and bad weather etc. Im not complaining as thats my life at the mo.

There needs to be something more than games to get me back for the next few years until kids are older..

PS - the $$$ vouchers are only good if your buying big ticket Items...

PSS - No one on Earth loves the WTs more than me.

Considering the financial crisis last season I am massively suprised that the crowd average still increased! Great signs.

Great points TS912 - heres My Observation
I have been to a few souths Tigers games and their supporter bas is vastly different to ours.

They are mostly greys or 30+ and very few children are present as apposed to the tigers who appear to be next gen families. Heaps of kids and teens at our games..

By nature it is difficult to outlay up front for something you just cant be sure you'll bbe using.

I will go to 3 odd games this year, only thing is I will make my Decission on the day. Im not alone hence the 17K average.

Marketing should be targeting you guys that can commit and more power to you who can.

I am a huge tigers supporter but my mates support other teams - Canberra, Penrith, Brisbane, Roosters etc - so we would prefer to go to the pub and watch especially as the grounds are spread all over sydney. I used to live in Melbourne and everything was in the centre and easy to get to and more to the point easy to go out together after even if we didnt all go to the games - will go to a few but I want to be with my mates on a weekend so we go to the pub - plus I cant plan to attend on an unknown day Friday- Monday 9 months out. I think another big difference in Melbourne is that people support the area they are from more then in Sydney

It would be a huge incentive for me to be a member if they would bring back the $8 tickets to opposition supporters. That was a big draw card for me the first year I was a member.

It will never happen.

It was Manly and Canberra who initially withdrew from the $8 ticket scheme and than it became a way for all clubs to squeeze as much as possible from all away fans
