2011 HALFBACK

I think he was referring his playing style as ugly.
I'm a little biased with Moltzen is just about my favourite player, but I think their is a massive gulf in their basic skills, lui makes too many simple passing errors, particuarly left to right, and his kicking is fairly average.
Lui fans say he finished the year well and he did, he played very well against St George, but he was his regular self right up to that game, if he was going to play how he did in the saints game all year, i'd happilly have him in all year.
moltzen i think allows us to play with great width and is very zippy in the centre of the ruck, i wont bang on to much about moltzen, cause as i said im biased

I wasn't asking you to explain for him, Moltzens strength is that he is a ball runner which doesn't do us any favours as we require an organising halfback which the club has been lacking since Prince left. His kicking and passing game got gradually better as the year went on (a few sweet passes found Ellis while he was on the left side) and you have to remember than Lui was thrust into a role and at a tender age he has thrived on the challenge. Lui has plied his trade extremely well and to insinuate that he was horrible all last year is a fallacy and lunacy.

PS, I'm not against Moltzen at half either, but unwarranted banter against Lui is just stupid. Lui an Benji took us to the finals whether you like it or not, he will probably be first in line, he put his hand up when the side needed him
and he delievered.

My comment got deleted, LOL - Sorry if that was breaking the rules, just a bit of humor.

Back on topic, it's really interesting to see everyone's opinion.
I hope the HEININGTON statement has some truth behind it & Sheen's persists with the kid Lui & Moltz can slot in elsewhere.

Imagine having these two + Farah & Benji on the field at the same time,
HIGH INTENSITY PLAY MAKING from all over the field.

Hopefully some luck goes our way this year on the injury front & we see some amazing football by the TIGERS.

**!!!!**
I couldn't agree with a post more.

I see Lui as our long term halfback & one of the top halfbacks of the game within a few years, worth his weight in gold. Definitely one to watch with a big career ahead of him.

I know everyone rates the golden boy Moltzen & he was great pre-injury but I'd definitely like to see him slot in somewhere else in the team so we can have both these players on field.

The thing with Lui is his age…....he's so young for a halfback that i want to stick with him through his mistakes because some of the positive things he's done shows the potential he has. We cant expect a quiet 20 year old to step into the 7 outside Farah and inside Marshall and not make mistakes and be overawed sometimes.

His kicking has been bagged a bit but ive seen him when he's been confident and relaxed kick better than anyone in the club and i have total faith that with time, he will bring this kicking game to the NRL level.

He is still a work in progress, but his potential is to big to ignore. Some of his left to right passes to Ellis hitting holes were class. Im confident he can bring his game to another level this year, and then step up even further over the coming years.

I must admit i thought moltzen, but i feel the way lui improved last year he deserves first go @ the 7 job, & bring moltzen off the bench. maybe if ayshford is out put moltzen in the centeres with lawrence.

They're both very young and very talented in slightly different ways.

Great discussion - Sheens and the staff who I'm sure regard all this banter very highly will you will find start round 1 (Excluding injury) with **Lui @ 7 and Moltzen on the Bench.**

Either way only **26 days, 7 hours and 50 odd mins** left for us to keep saying the same old things….

I understand some people think MOLTZEN is the truth & I agree - But he hasn't played a game in HOW LONG?

I have no doubt he's in shape & ready to go, but coming back from injury; I believe his first few games will be off the bench for small stints before he even gets a starting crack.

I've stated many times in this thread how I feel, but I defs think if we stick with Lui - we still eventually see some exceptional growth & development because he is an amazing talent already ticking some of the right boxes & in time will be such an on-point play making force, even though he is the "UGLIEST HALFBACK IN THE COMP"

Its a tough call…. If Moltzen was the first choice, Lui wont learn or develop his style of game in Reggies. He must stay in the Top Squad to grow, but you have to also remember Moltz is 2 years ahead of him. I've never believed Moltzen is the solution to our 7 delema, and to this day have not seen him play any style of football which suits this team with him at 7\. However, what I see in Lui is a perfect balance that if he can learn, and thats a big IF, learn to over-rule Farah & Marshall, Lui will become a great Halfback that suits our Forward Pack...

A team of 6's and 7's might win a few games, but it wont win you a Premiership!!!

You won't win a premiership without them either. It's a delicate balance.

Lui's a natural footballer, with a footballers brain, if and or when he is allowed or brings his ball playing skills to first grade it will be an exciting time….he was great at 5/8 in the 20's
He just needs the forwards to do their thing, give him some room and with more confidence he'll come on in leaps and bounds this year imo

Hello fellow Weststigers supporters. I have been following the Magpies/Weststigers now for some 30 years & we have never been in a better situation regarding our halfback stocks as well as across the board. In my opinion Moltzen should be the starting halfback as we are perfect in win record when he is in the Number 7 & I believe ovwerall he is a better player right now than Lui.
This said I believe Lui is a long-term project who may or may not be the best halfback longtime.
Miller I think is a fantastic player who will develop very quickly now he is in a club like the Tigers & he will eventually unseat both Lui/Moltzen as our preferred NO 7 IN THE NOT TOO DISTANT FUTURE.
Defence id Lui's "achilles heel" & this is a vital aspect at this level of competition.!!!!!
Anyway here's to a fantastric 2011 season guys!!!!!!!

Let trial form decide.

To be honest if Ayshfords injury carries through to the first round I suspect Moltzen will be played at centre.

Knowing Sheens though it certainly wouldn't supris me to see Moltzen in the 1 jersey against the Dogs

AGREED!! Tim Sheens spoke of Rob Lui at the start of Last year… "When He's got the ball in his hands, There's not many better" BIG CALL from the man who brought you one Mr. Benji Marshall... I am a MASSIVE Lui fan, I know by this time next year... There'll be NO DOUBTS!! So enjoy the ride...

I picked Lui based solely on him being the encumbent half back and therefore deserves first go at the 7\. If this is the case i believe Moltzen will be the 14 covering most positions in the backline other than wing. Most other clubs woul;d kill for this dilemma.

At the end of the day they both have there positive and neagtive points. It will come down to who Benji, Robbie and maybe one or two other senior players feel confident in playing with I would have thought.

GEEZ I hate it when I spend five minutes putting a reply together and then press the wrong button!!!!!!

Okay, again. I picked Lui because:

1\. Lui ended last season there and didn't deserve to lose his spot.

2\. Lui improved all last season and there's nothing to suggest this won't stop.

3\. Moltzen hasn't played NRL for nearly a year and it would be a big ask for him to start the first game at half and do a better job than Lui.

4\. I also think that based on above, the 100% record Moltzen has at half wouldn't last past the first game. As good a Moltzen is I still think he might be a bit wary of that knee (remember Marshall was the same)

5\. None of the above means I think Lui is a better long term prospect than Moltzen tho!
