2011 team vs 2010 vs 2005

We need to remember that the 2005 team were not supposed to win. 2005 was just a building year until everything clicked at the right time. We did have our luck in the finals series with Brisbane limping into the game against us and Parra and Melbourne (2 of our biggest dangers) being knocked out for us, but our confidence was sky high. No matter how many points we conceded, there was the belief we could score more. But on paper, our team was not that great.

Comparing teams on paper, I would give the win to 2011 without a doubt. But based on current form in 2011 vs grand final form in 2005, I'd say that 2005 would probably win. That is simply because 2011 has not clicked yet. Yet…

Mate that was thrown in for a laugh… I'm glad SOMEONE picked it up!!
But no mate... I'm not serious, Most definately NOT!!
And were kicking better then... Or I was more confident.... One or the other??

Batboy, are you serious? Moltzen better than Hodgo? Kicking better now than 2005?

Probably best to stop comparing all the tigers teams to 2005 and embrace the team for what it is now.

The game, players, opposition, referees have all changed.

the 2005 side had a fullback and halfback who were star players. lui and moltzen have potential but havent been as consistant. they are playing good at the right time of the year though. our team in 2005 might not have had as many rep players as some teams but they played very well as a team. this year's team has to win the comp this year for me to say that they are better or as good as the 2005 team. im pretty sure i was saying almost the exact same thing this time last year, and last year we went very close. we should have won it last year

If you compare player like for like, this years team seem much better than 2005.

But that ignores the best asset the 05 team had, confidence and adrenaline.

Think about it this way, if on 05 grand final night the cowboys were replaced with our 2011 team, would the 2011 team win.

No way, 05 tigers would win for sure.

I know one thing, 2005 only spent around half the salary cap. Remember they tried to sign prince and benji to longer term deal at the end of year. This year we went 150k over. Just on price 2011 should be better.

But did we just get better value for money in 2005?

Only one of those teams have won a premiership…

untill another wins one, can you really compare. Potential and reality are very different things

I was just thinking about this the other day.

On paper you can compare the players and say 2011 wins 8-5 or whatever, but that doesn't take into account how much effect some of those players have and the combinations.

The prince-marshall-hodgson-farah combo was killer. and pat richards was the best winger in the comp that year. Prince especially was incredible and its impossible to quantify how much effect that had on the team.

Apart from that the 2011 team is all over them with guys like lawrence, ellis and galloway and Benji who is in career best form and a much more complete player than he was then. D is better in 2011\. Attack probably better in 05.

Very difficult to say. under the super fast 2005 rules the 2005 team probably wins. Under the current rules the 2011 team probably gets the biscuits.

Would be a top game though! Young Benji vs Benji today. I think a few people would come to watch that match-up!

not so sure i remember pat as the best winger? totally agree with prince though; at the time benji was getting all the plaudits but i thought he was the main reason they went so well.

surely there is a ps3 game you could select both teams to play against each other and set both players to (auto)??
id watch that…

On paper, 2011 wins comfortably.

However even in 05 many sides beat us on paper. We were never really taken seriously and have been accused of fluking it ever since. What most critics keep forgetting is that the 05 side played together as a TEAM.

If someone made a break there was 5 or 6 guys backing him up. If an opposition player broke our line, the whole side turned around and chased him. We had weak defenders in that side who were religiously protected in defense. They were a band of brothers who played for each other. They played to each others strengths and compensated for each others weaknesses.

They played together so well and had a game plan that was so perfectly tailored to them that the league brought in rule changes which stuffed up their potential dominance.

I'm gonna back the 05 side because they have been there and done that - they are proven champions…..hopefully my mind will change in 5 weeks.

As Sheens said…'you can't fluke a premiership.' And to be honest I have never heard anyone question the validity of that premiership.

.

Well he scored 20 tries that year, and not all of them were served up to him on a platter. The grand final one for instance, I doubt too many others would have got there. Speed, size, a great fend and the confidence to back himself down the sideline. Maybe not the best but very close surely.

Toddy Payten seems to agree with me
