2012 The Year of SMART Football

I would really like to see the coaching staff hammer home that next year should all be about playing smart football. Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying throw out the razzle dazzle stuff, but there is a time and a place. Smart does not necessarily mean boring. It means getting rid of penalties out of the Tigers game. I would say that more than half of the points scored against us in 2011 were on the back of penalties. For every penalty conceded, the offending player should have to put $50 in a kitty to be donated to charity at the end of the year. $100 for Finals
It means playing field position. ( Winning by 2 in a semi Final with 4 minutes to go, 5th tackle. Smart option kick it in the corner, and tackle your guts out. Dumb option go for the fancy knockout blow. )
That is what makes Brisbane and Melbourne so good. They play smart.

I agree with what your saying there. Another thing old like to see improve is our 1st set after we score a try.

I don't know how many times after we've scored, that we screw up with a knock on, a silly offload that doesn't need to be thrown, or a forced pass. After we score we should just be aiming to get to the kick and making the opponent run it out of their red zone. Not drop it and give them a chance to level things up.

we will have to wait until next season to see if this has been sorted out.
once again a new season will bring a roller coaster ride of emotion and fortunes.
I would like to see wests-tigers finish 4th or better 😛ray: , but who knows what is going to happen.

o.k. other than Beau ( beau knows)

Haha maybe Beau should let the rest of us in on it so I can be less anxious throughout next season lol

You smart football is not giving penalties away. That is wrong there. The Warriors scored their 1st try when Heighington got caught out at marker. He decided not to make a tackle and Locke broke through and a try resulted. The smart play would have been to make the tackle and get a set defensive line.

Smart play is looking for repeat sets and working for a good kick position and kicking the ball deep with 5 to go when your not in front by much.

groat's defense then didnt really help either

COOORRRRECT!!!!! And if my memory serves me correctly, Groat lost the ball in a tackle just previous to that to give the Warriors possession.
By the way, this is not a "knock Groat post", as he is a good prospect.

Lol, I wouldn't count on it. I've been waiting 5 years to see whether after a full pre-season, we've changed our ways when it comes to things like ball control, ineffectual kicks early in the tackle count and dumb passes. I highly doubt whether this will change again next season.

In saying this however, we did improve a bit in this regard towards the end of the season, but even still, our failure to get the basics right either got the other team back in the match or in the case of the Warriors match, lost us the game.
