2013 NRL add

Jessica Mauboy has been charged with providing the anthem for season 2013\. She has gone with a cover of Etta James's hit "Somethings got a hold on me".

For mine, Mauboy ticks a few boxes re; pulling in a new demographic of fans being that she is young, current, female and aboriginal…however I think this is dreadful rendition of this song. She has sung it in a cheesey BS pop format that takes away from the soul it originally included.

Here's the add;
http://youtu.be/5Fj-9juBbCY

I like the visuals where people are playing footy on the beach and in the park and their moves are finished off with NRL stars scoring but I feel the song is not real inspiring. In fact it is woefully lame.
I think our own Bonstonker could easily make a better add and his cuts and music mixes would get the blood pumping far more than this effort.

What are peoples thoughts on this?

I haven't heard the song but Jessica Mauboy is smoking hot and her career is going gangbusters so she's a good get for the NRL. Plus being half Indigenous is a nice tie-in for the code.

Personally I think they shouldn't have flashes of her singing it, especially when they video her legs? Like it's not even related at all, the ad shouldn't be a video clip.

I love it, shows that NRL is everyones' game

Pretty disappointed, to be honest. Was hoping it would be much better. But I guess the ad is not really aimed at me…

Is this for rugby league or netball? Just another example of where our game is heading imo soft weak girly pop crap. Who is this aimed at, 13 yr old girls?
NRL grow a pair

NRL grow a pair

Gotta agree mate. The strength of RL is that it is played by highly skilled individuals who are as tough as nails. Chances are you are going to get hurt playing it. I think the rule to outlaw the shoulder charge is a disgrace as is the move to promote it as a family friendly game by having a pop star as the face of its promotional campaign. I can see the reasoning to an extent for both but am not really excited about the way the game is heading. There is nowhere near enough big hits in the add and although the skill is showcased, Mauboy is given about a third of the screen time…it almost resembles a video hits video....

The kind of people who want to see an ad with big hits are going to be fans anyway. The NRL risks getting killed in the family market by the AFL esp out in western Sydney unless they can capture that demographic. I'd say that's what the ad is aimed at (still haven't seen it).

I can handle looking at Jess…I culd look at her all day long....I look at enough dopey ugly footy players throughout the year to last a lifetime, jess is much cuter - more skin = even better 😕

The way the footy footage is put together looks great IMO. You can tell the NRL are going all-out to show the game as a family orientated sport for the everyman.
Song is pretty poxy though :frowning:

As someone has already stated, I don't think they have shown too much of the blood and thunder side of the game because blokes who love that side of it are already fans…they are wanting to convert the people who only have a passing interest in the NRL.

Personally, I love the old ones where they had a bit of thumping rock and roll as the soundtrack, it compliments the footage so much better.

Comments are disabled for this video.

Says it all doesn't it.

Is this an NRL song to amp up the crowd, encourage tribalism, foster a sense of pride in the game….or something your unmarried 55 year uncle and his best friend Bruce would dance to?

Its a misfire, they can tap new markets without resorting to this. And they continually do it, things like this and every GF halftime performance....nothing decent since Hoodoo Gurus which is pathetic.

The video and effects are the only redeeming feature for me.

You have to admit though, the shots of her dancing in this add look terrible. Wtf does her staring at the camera and 'shaking' to the music have anything to do with nrl?
Have you all forgotten that this is the song that is going to be played before all games at the grounds and on tv? Bon jovi and the hoodoo gooroos at least stirred emotion before a game (to an extent), this will definitely give me the cringe factor before each game!

Doesn't do nothing for me , you need something that gets the blood pumping . Something like this does it for me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=faMKAUW1ks0

I enjoyed the ad the NRL (or was it Foxtel) brought out around 10 years ago when they had the sound of a V8 engine revving played over the top of massive collisions on the field. That one was awesome.
It is obvious from the banning of the shoulder charge that the NRL is in some way trying to tone down the gladiatorial aspect of the game, so Jessica Mauboy and candy-arse pop music it is

I'm not a real fan of Mauboy, but I actually don't mind the ad, its happy and upbeat. We tried to get that tough, tribal feel with the Bon Jovi ad and I don't think it worked. Imo I think this certainly beats the Bon Jovi ad.
