You seem to keep forgetting we have extra cap money added in also

Bryce Beau and Rhino and the others are no longer involved in our purse strings either and Reddy ,Tuqiri ,Ayshford ,Miller are also gone
 
Woods and Farahs upgrades would be the best part of the cap expansion, and those we dropped we covered with a larger number of promising talent from within the system…. we have also prudently shopped elsewhere for bits and pieces...

Woods must be on 800 k a season and Farah 1.1 million a season for us to have used up all our cap space

None of the youngsters (bar Brooks and Moses and they are majority incentive deals)coming through have had upgrades yet (Tedesco ,Sue ,Sironen ,Ava are only signed until the end of this season )If we have currently used up all our cap space Tigers fans should be absolutely outraged

Farah estimates are $900,000
Brooks and Moses estimated $400,000 each incentive based (though the max will be counted into cap until proven)

thats $1.7M

Blair, the perennial favourite, reports $500,000

so $2.2M now... leaving $4.1M of cap left

Lawrence on $300k

Woods also $300K

now $3.5M

Now the minimum NRL salary is set at $80K. 25 players to be paid from the $6.3M, so now 19 players from the remaining $3.5M, which equals $184,210.53 each.

I can already hear you moan. Not all players were promoted on that kind of money, of course. Tauber with Moltzen in tow of course have been minimum wage, Braith on suspected $200K, Sauce would be on minimum (WTF), Fulton just extended, Patterson, Tapau, we wouldnt have been defending bids from elsewhere on Tedesco, Nofo, Koro, Brown, Sue, Sirronen... we bought Gavet the most highly touted prop out of NZ obviously on base salary dollars...

Think about it, we have a few dollars to spare sure, but if we max out this year, with a long list of re-negotiations coming next year we need space to move.

So where is your head at... wax the lot on a marquee in an unproven untested squad, or leave room (dollars that acrue for coming years) to retain our best.
 
All sources point to both Brooks and Moses signing to incentive based $400k each package deal. Obviously Moses wont hit it, but Im not spouting crap. That doesnt mean though that the max figures arent calculated into the cap space… the ole I didnt think they would make the pay rate doesnt cut it.
 
reading through all of this i have a question i hope someone can answer.

given it is known that the club has been struggling financially, and with the balmain part of the club needing to repay ($2m was it?) in 2 years, where does this money come from?

i know that the nrl basically bailed the club out and will cover any losses incurred this year, but would buying a "marquee" simply be akin to buying him on credit with money they dont actually have?

dumb question possibly, but i dont mind looking stupid. my beard is evidence of that! :ugeek:

we haven't used up all our cap space. But once we have resigned those names you mentioned plus koro and i think Nofo too. We will have. Teddy will require at least 400k if not 500k looking at the way he's playing right now.

This is straight from the NRL.com site

Marquee player allowances are capped at 600 k for the entire squad (Top 25 ) this is money outside the cap

Long serving allowances are paid to players who have completed 8 seasons in all grades
(200 k )

375 k for any players outside of the Top 25

Players are allowed UNLIMITED amounts from corporate sponsors outside of the NRL who aren't associated with a club These sponsors are not allowed to use NRL logos etc

100k for 5 cars in the Top 25 which is also outside of the salary cap

Win bonuses are capped at 1k a win at a maximum of 13 wins

The cars surprised me , but the rest was pretty well much as I knew bar the UNLIMITED from corporate sponsors I had believed it was a maximum 150 k

So if a sponsor/s is happy to go unnoticed is prepared to kick in 500 k you could use that towards a big signing

Turnstyle, every year the NRL gives each team, well this year $7.55M. What we have done is taken a loan which is payed back over the term by a reduction in our yearly grant, offset by giving NRL independent members absolute voting power until Balmain either forfeits or repays their debt. In essence, we have funds on hand to clear debts and improve our business structure, hoping we can turn a profit to negate the running deficit we will incur in relation to other teams in the competition. So until we square the ledger we are at best running on an NRL grant that covers the salary cap alone, so unless we improve our business model and continue to struggle to turn a profit, every dollar it costs other than paying players ie. staff, facilities, advertisement etc will run us into further debt.

On the Marquee player, all we are given is a maximum we can spend $6.3M, and an allowance of $600K in extra sponsorship that infringes on the club intellectual property, so an add with a player wearing club colours. If we do not have the ability to finance and procure sponsorship up to these limits then we just have to keep within our means.

Unless I am severely mistaken, the salary cap is funded by the NRL. So realistically all the players are actually not payed by their clubs, they are payed by the NRL (although I guess they are payed through their clubs, but the money is coming from the NRL)
 
But that doesn't stop any sponsor of the clubs tipping money into Farah ,Keefy's ,Woods ,Brooks etc as part off their contract which is OUTSIDE the cap

And if Watto (for eg ) is prepared to stick up heaps of dough and not get any recognition we could stick X amount onto a contract of any player

That's is why clubs can't deregister a player , but the NRL can as technically the NRL owns everyone's contracts

okay, thanks very much for explaining that cochise. having an incumbent player as a marquee just reminded me of their franchise player, but i didnt understand the correct reasons they placed that tag on them.
i thought that they were just players at a team that they placed a great deal of value on and paid billions of dollars to!
i didnt know it usually happened when they were holding out - is this correct?

I hope you didn't think I was being rude, that wasn't my intention at all. I actually used to view it the same way you did until very recently when the club I support franchised a player. The funny thing is the term Franchise player means pretty much exactly as you said in all other US sports except NFL.

You are correct that a team will usually Franchise a player when the player is holding out for more money or a longer contract. For example in the recent negotiations with Aaron Woods, if this was the NFL and Woods decided he wasn't happy with the contract being offered the Tigers would have had the option of Franchising him and preventing him from signing with another club. This allows the club to then continue negotiations or work to replace the player. This does not happen very often because the cost of doing so is quite high for the team so you are correct in saying that it usually a player the team places a lot of value in.
 
I know exactly how it works Happy, how do you think Benji was driving around in the Lotus a few years back… it was the clubs car... the $600K, lets put it this way, what do you think Sonny is on the books for, and how much do you think Channel 9 is sponsoring him for.

You think we have the same power as Brisbane with their Thoroughbreds? Obviously we can have the likes of Lockyer on $200K as the books say in his twilight years. We have never nurtured anything of the sort. We have dramas keeping our major sponsorship in lean years, neverlone silent bankers.

Dont laugh at me, laugh at the state of the club, it is the root of the problems.

100% wrong. If they sponsor the club it is inside the salary cap. They have to be silent sponsors, like the Broncos and their Thoroughbreds. I dont think you are getting it. These external non-cap sponsors have to be untied, non sponsor, just a random freebie for all intensive purposes. We cannont even keep a full fledged sponsor logo on chest/sleeve.

The second situation is from our unnamed corporate sponsor (Watto )
