May was due to start off the bench for Samoa against New Zealand on Sunday but he has was cut from the squad 24 hours out from the game. It is understood that May picked up a hamstring strain. He was spotted returning to Sydney from New Zealand on Saturday but is expected to re-join the Samoan camp next week.
Canberra forward Ata Mariota could be his replacement.
May’s absence comes after brother Taylan was ruled out of the tournament because of a torn quad.
