500K can be spent better :)

While I would of loved him. Luke Lewis might be worth 500k for 1-2 years, but he won't be worth anything near that in four years. Look at Civoniceva or Hindmarsh even, Parra are playing him dollars other clubs are playing for the likes of Lyon, Bird, etc but he is nowhere near worth that as he isn't the player he was four years ago. Not to mention four year contracts are very risky as it is. We've already got Blair who is a long term risk at the cost we have him, and the Sharks signed Tupou for that long which turned out to be a flop.

Look at the players available. We could throw that money at a fullback like Kevin Locke, or Greg Inglis (Maybe 600k needed, but id rather pay that for GI than 500 for LL).

End of the day a 1 or a 7 are a much better long term option than a soon to be 29 year old back rower.

Or we could throw it at a half. The likes of Todd Carney, Jamie Soward, Gareth Widdop, Mitchell Pearce, Scott Prince, Adam Reynolds, Jeff Robson,Johnathan Thurston are available at the end of 2013 and would all be long term more valuable than a Luke Lewis. Some of them we may even get for 300k etc and be able to sign another good player at 200k. Also a better all round signing than Lewis.

We need a 7 more than anything. Pearce or Prince sound good, although Pearce would be more likely…

make a MASSIVE play for Thurston.
How good would we be.
1 Tedesco
6 Marshall
7 Thurston
9 Farah

Although if by some miracle we did get Thurston we would probably see
6 Thurston
7 Marshall

I don't know where people think we have 500k left

Lewis's contract would of been heavily backended

If we had 250 k left for 2013 I would be surprised

According to the reports - Lewis on four year deal for $1.8 I believe (450k per year). Tigers were 60,000 less per year so 390k.
Still a decent amount assuming that's the rough figure although I'm not sure how many players fit under that range that are on the market.

No doubts Lewis won't be worth the 450K in 4 years time but the hope for the sharks is that they'll get real purchase out of him in the 4 years as a whole. So i can justify that money. For us, we didn't need him that badly that we should spend that kind of money. It may end up a blessing in disguise. We're well off for back rowers and have other areas that are of more concern. In my opinion we look at junior development. It's working well right now for us i believe we got to strike whilst the irons hot. I'm hoping this will be the focus.

As we've seen over the past 3-4 years, we've simply added one quality player each season. Anasta fitting the build next year. After that we just focus on what we have and what we're developing. The next group we look at is our under 20's stars and then the cream of our SG Ball and Matts players. Lewis would've been a bonus but it affects minimally really.

We made our best offer. W emissed out. I can live with that.

Incentive based deals to some younger players to keep them in the system and hone their development.

That or if the Sharks have to get rid of Smith chase him

Would love to see us sign a prop for next year as i feel we are one short, LOL wonder if the Sharks would let Gibbs go?.

I agree with these posts..as much as I like Lewis as a player…. we didn't need to invest our $$$$$$ in another backrower.....the money is better spent elsewhere...and Gibbs plse come home...

I was hoping we would have done this for Cronk when he was off contract.

Even if it took getting rid of 4-5 players, I think it would pay off.

Agree we need a #7….stay right away from Pearce, unless we get him for about $200k which is what he's really worth!

every year we bought a panther reject i always would wish it would be lewis.
we finally got our chance and i wasn't excited.

seems like we are just throwing darts trying to fill that 1 marquee signing each year instead of focusing on our problems.

Would have been a handy pick up and with the talk of a team or two being introduced in the near future the asking prices of players will go through the roof. So the idea now is be smart, sit back and see what players might have to be discharged to make way for some of the bigger signings. Similar to the Sharks last year when they got Gibbs and Fifita. If not try and make the best of the massive talent pool you have in the South West,Balmain and Kereba systems. Sounds simple!!!!!!

yeh that's what im thinking too.. forgive me if im wrong, but there doesn't seem to be a plan as to how the money should be spent, where do we lack depth, where do we lack consistency etc.

we have an abundance of 2nd rowers and outside backs in our system, yet we chased 2 backrowers and an outside back this year and now another backrower.
the only explanation i can find is anasta in the halves, even though sheens said he would be a good replacement for ellis

Im pretty happy we never got Lewis on the figures quoted.I believe he has maybe two good years left in him so for mine it has worked out for the best .
Use the money on a quality halfback.
4 years at 1.8 could be a really bad move for the sharks, yes they have a great pack, but barring carney(who fails in big games) their backline is one of the most average in the competition.Ican see them being too top heavy in the forwards so who gets the chop.
I would welcome Brycie back to the club as im sure plenty of others would.
We need another prop and for years weve needed a quality number 7, not another backrower.

We certainly need a halfback, and a good one.

However, who is there to lure?

I would stick with Miller, who is the best halfback in the NYC and has tons of potential, but, for some reason, best known to him and not us, Sheens does not seem to want him.

Benji is not the answer and Thurston would not be viable, so any suggestions?

Maybe a Pommy half. They are usually very clever.

make Brett Finch an offer, to be used as a temp fill in for season 2013, and go sign a marquee half back for 2014 onwards.
