6 man Bench Utilisation

Yes, first thought is to think you would put backs and halves to cover for injury and concussion but coaches don't plan for this. Their first thought is to win the game.
I'm thinking the trend would be to put in impact players.
There will be less call for Terrel type endurance players and more call for the Royce hunt type impact forward.
I think this rule will affect the game more than they think.
Despite the 19 player squad, the number of interchanges (and 4 bench players to be used) remain the same. Therefore could not have too many low minute impact forwards

Sorry , I knew the number of interchanges.was the same but didn't realise only 4 players can be chosen.
That's not so bad.
Will be interesting to see what they do.
One good thing about the first round bye is that Benji gets to see that too.

Will be interesting to see what Benji does with the bench and who does backup hooker duties
Assuming you carry an outside back and someone capable in the halves also with a six man bench...

Latu Fainu (Jock Madden while Latu injured)
Luke Lualilii
Bunty Afoa
Royce Hunt
Sione Fainu
Charlie Murray (hooker backup or Madden?)

You can't have the same guys riding the pine and not getting game time each week also (as you can still only use four of the six benchies) so they would rotate a couple of the bench guys in and out of Reggies.

No more Mason or Hope. I think Ethan Roberts will be very close and Sayfarts back with Geyer etc...

I don’t think Mason or Hope done their NRL bench chances any harm yesterday.
In fact they both ripped in demonstrating high energy and increased their chances of getting on our NRL bench.
I thought Hope clearly led our defensive line speed, particularly in the first 20mins when we were under the pump and Mason showed great energy and intent on both sides of the ball.
I thought Mason was very impressive and made a real impact for a young man in what was officially his first game playing predominantly as a 13.

i don't imagine much would change.
Hasn't the league operated on taking 2 emergency players with them every game?
Instead of sitting in the stands ,they will now be sitting on the bench.
Think it will just be a way to reward up n comers to the limelight n noise

Previously you had four players to choose from (unless for foul play concussions).
Now you have six, of which four can play.
Significant tactical change.

Champion @Merlot, we'll see how things pan out but I reckon it will change the strategies used by coaches. The previous locked in 4 subs will now expand to 6 (where the extra players you referred to only came in due to injury protocols), with a range of player/position options now available that will need to be juggled.

Hope seems like a good dude and I love his story, but I think the momentum of the game really shifted yesterday when Haywood came on at 9. Behind Madden, I had him as our most influential player. Until then, the Roosters 9 was killing us and Hope really wasn't providing anything in attack. In fact, the dude borderline has a hospital pass in him the way he comes out of dummy half, dummies and then passes to his front-rower right at the line. The defence reads it every time and it's going to result in errors.

Mason doesn't deserve the shit he's getting on the forum right now. He was full of energy and defended well in the middle. Sure, he wasn't a standout, but he didn't do anything wrong either.

What would make this work if we played 3 games , nsw cup 1st , then flegg or sg ball , would give nsw cup players a rest before 1st grade , as only two players needed it wouldn’t be that much of a stretch, chances are no one would be needed .
Just thinking out side the box

That sounds all too easy

Agree with Madden and Haywood.

I thought there were a few times where Mason’s defence looked very awkward (where he went too low and players were flipped-a bit like Latu last year). Also didn’t see any link play from Mason to indicate he will be a good option as a 13

Talent is that thin, you don't park a game breaker on the bench, I see no change

I think with the new bench you can go back to carrying 3 big boppers and a specialist edge while carrying a utility spine and back player. Guys like pole, hunt, bunty and sione will add a lot of explosive power potential for Benji…will be very interesting.

Hope at dummy half
Picks up the ball
Cocks the elbow
Starts to rise
Passes

Those split seconds are crucial...he cant pass from the ground

I didn't pick up on those tackles mate but doesn't surprise me. Seems like something the short guys have to be careful with. Api has been guilty of it too.

Agree that there wasn't a lot of link play from Mason, but I thought our structure really changed once Jock went off. We went from playing off the spine to a lot of bodies in motion, pushing up and offloading. It was entertaining to watch and looked like a talented bunch of kids out there hungry for a win, but not a lot of structure. To be honest, I found it hard to tell who was playing what position by that stage, Mason included. I just thought he was busy and brought some energy without setting the world on fire.

Besides the dropped ball that is...

He's got far too many errors in his game for my liking. Hope he can iron it out, because he brings a lot of energy.
