6 team WCC?

According to the SMH, Hetherington has come out and suggested a 6 team World Club Challenge consisting of 1, 2 & 3 of each comp. Would this benefit the game?

I think it could work provided a couple of things were done:

1\. Play the games at a neutral venue or alternate each year.
2\. Play the games in November after both grand finals

I also reckon a better system would be to have the top 4 of each comp play like this.

AUS 1 v ENG 4 - Winner to SF 1
AUS 2 v ENG 3 - Winner to SF 2

ENG 1 v AUS 4 - Winner to SF 2
ENG 2 v AUS 3 - Winner to SF 1

OR just bring back sevens!

Not the top 4 or top 6\. Imagine if the team that didn't win the NRL comp became World Champions. That doesn't make sense. It's good how it is now but they should have it at the NRL Premiers home ground every second year and maybe play it in OCT/NOV. They could bring back the Sevens aswell but only if there is alot of prize money from a sponsor otherwise teams wouldn't use their best players.

I am with alien. It is good how it is now. However, it should be played at the end of a season Premier vs Premier
Not the start of a new one. Last year's Premiers with a new team vs. Last year's Premiers with a new team. It just doesn't make sense.

The good thing about that proposal is that it is all over in 1 week. Players are only asked to play 1 extra game so it is not too hard on their bodies.

Yes, the game needs to be moved to the post season instead of the pre season. That way the teams can treat it as a bonus instead of a burden. Expanding it to 3 games would also add to the credibility of the whole thing.

I rate the sevens idea. If you could make it worthwhile, like you said, it would be great to have it back.

We'd have a pretty good team too!

1\. Lawrence
2\. Taumata
3\. Benji
4\. Farah
5\. Tuiaki
6\. Tuqiri
7\. Ellis
–---------------
8\. Fulton
9\. Pritchard
10\. Moltzen
11\. Heighington

Would be better if the top 4 go through. Think about it, the FIFA Confederations Cup is the winners from each confederation, WC Hosts and WC Champs, yet the actual world cup has several teams from most confederations. The UEFA Champions League can be won by a side that runs 4th in their domestic competition. I don't see why the WCC has to be the 2 best teams. Top 3 is fine with me, do something like

Pool A
Aus1
Eng2
Eng3

Pool B
Eng1
Aus2
Aus3

play each team once, winners of the 2 pools play in the final. 3 games max, 2 minumim. The clubs will only need maybe 1 more trial. For this years one we would have Melbourne, Parramatta and Canterbury along with 3 pommy sides.

Ummm…It was called Super League....and the Clubs canned it for numourus reasons....

Cant see them wanting to play even 3 competitive games at the end of a season...or pre season..it's not Soccer....

7's or 9's has merit though....

I think the Minor Premiers and the Grand Final winners could go into the WCC. If the same club won both… well then the other Grand Final club. This would then give a 4 team WCC.

When to play it? I still think Feb would be ideal. I don't think clubs and players will want to play straight after the season finishes. But maybe even Nov or Dec could work. It should be played in UK one year and then Aust the next.

Why Canterbury and not Brisbane?

I don't think the World Club Challenge is on Channel 9 this year. I think it's only on Fox Sports 2\. I wonder why Channel 9 isn't having it this year?
