89 grand final

I have been watching rugby league since 1977 and the Canberra Raiders side of the laste 80's early 90's was the best club side I have ever seen. When they were on song no one could complete with them. They won grand finals in 1989, 1990 and 1994 and runner up in 1987 and 1991\. Brillant stats.

G

Yep, and also the Dogs knocked them out in '95 in the preliminary finals after they went 22-2 that season. If they had won in '95 it would have been a truly fantastic dynasty.

Was only a youngster in 88 ,89 but I have never watched those two games and never will I have to turn it off when they bring them back for chooseday games mental scarring

Best Grand Final ever. (I was a Western Suburbs supportive so I can be objective about the game)

Both teams have great players including Big Mal, Laurie daley, Ricky Stewart, Brick with Ears, Steve Walters, Bradley Clyde etc, Garry Jack, Timmy Brasher, Roach, Sironen and Pearce.

Gary is correct the first 2 tries Balmain scored were against the run of play and bombed a few chances to win the game.

Both teams have great packs.

They were brilliant off the field as well, particularly with their creative accounting

They were fined for being over the cap (a big thing then) in '89 - but too late for us.
I was out there and although I taped the game could never bring myself to watch it and eventually threw it out.
Even now I can't watch highlights - have to change the channel.
Didn't speak to a soul for 3 days after the game- including my family.

Believe that the 89' team did not watch the game until 2005, with several cartons of crown lager in tow :frowning:

I still cry every time I think of Benny's field goal Bloody Inglis field goal could have bounced back

Why didn't you just tape over it?

I couldn't acknowedge its existence.
Eventually my (ex) wife turfed it.
To this day I change the channel immediately any mention or any vision of it is shown on tv.

Blocker still has never watched the 89 GF.
It is generally conceded that Warren Ryan lost us the grand final by taking Sirro and block off the field.
In those days they could not go back on, and Mal Meninga has often spoken about the fact that his team was given one almighty lift when they left, in fact, as he said, the team knew the moment they left, that they would win.

We had our usual grand final party that day, 50 or so at the Barby, it was devistating, especially following the 88 grand final where that arsehole Terry Lamb knocked out Ellery Hanly. That also cost us a GF. :rant

Nothing changed with Lamb, not all that long ago he landed in court for king hitting a bloke on a golf course. :imp:

That is a really good point. After watching both grand finals objectively, I think old Balmain fans should be more aggrieved about the 1988 grand final. If Hanley stayed in the field in 1988, Balmain were the better team.

I do not believe Balmain were the better team in 1989.

He was sensational to say the least , betto.
One of the best Poms to ever come to the Tigers (and we have had plenty of good ones)
IMO he played better for us than Hanley the year before.
Don't know where he is now - seems to have disappeared.
Some are saying Canberra had a better team in '89 but that's completely wrong.
They did have a good team with some of the players already established stars and some up and comers who would become stars.
Our guys were all at their peak.
We should have won and we deserved to.

I really think that the only Grand Final that Canberra won that has any credibility* was the 1994 game but poor old Martin Bella from the Bulldogs set the scene for a flogging dropping the ball from the kick off.
They may very well have gone back to back Premiers if Ricky Stuart hadn't broken his ankle just prior to the Semi's in 1995, i think the current Wests NSWRL Cup coach in Trevor Schodel had a crack at filling Sticky's boots but the Raiders went out the back door in the Semi's .
*Still bitter about 1989 and the fact that the Raiders rorted the salary cap to such an extent for a couple of years that it very nearly bankrupted them, just like the Titans now although the Titans have achieved nothing in return!.

Thanks ck. did u play with him. My memory is patchy but I remember him being a game breaker and an excellent goal kicker. Did he only play with the tigers in 89?

No the Milkybar Kid or Milk Bottle returned in 1990, remember these players were playing back to back seasons so they were generally only available for a limited number of games as their commitments were obviously with their UK clubs which in this case was the then UK super club along with Wigan in the Chemics ie Widnes.
I still recall a game against the Knights played at Newcastle in 1990* on a Saturday with the great old ABC broadcast and Andy attempted to convert for a crucial lead, it was high, it was long but was it wide, the goal posts were bl@#dy high but without the obligitory flags on top and the touchies ruled no goal and Andy blew up De Luxe and more.
*In hindsight it might have been 1989 as the away game the Tigers lost to the Knights that saw them have to have a play off in '90 was the one where Bruce McGuire declined to play so he could be at the birth of his child, help please!.

We had a play off for 5th position against the Knights at Parra Stadium Gold, is that what you're thinking of?

I always thought Schofield was better than Currier. Currier had that potential to commit a howler.

Whilst on the topic of 1989, a bit of trivia. Wests (13th with 7 wins) beat both grand finalists in the regular home and away season.
