There’s no coach turning this team around in less than 3 years. Madge doing the best with the crap he has been given. His recruitment has been smart and the club as a whole is building, unfortunately a tough draw and some poor performances will not make us look good on the ladder come the end of the year but as a whole I think the club is building the right way.

He’s going about things a whole lot better than our last couple coaches. He’s playing the long game which takes patience but in our current predicament it’s the best option. We can’t afford a new coach, extend Madge one more season and see how he goes.

Desperately need to keep cleaning out the rubbish from our cap, he’s trying his best and will continue to try. I’m happy he’s tough and willing to yell and drop players, a soft coach wouldn’t be able to change our culture I think

He’s not perfect and has made mistakes but he’s our best option

Sorry but this year is more his team than last year and we’re going backwards. I was in favour of an extension during the week but there is no way in hell he should get one now.

It’s still barely his team mate. I would say we’re doing the same as last year. There’s no better options than Madge and a rebuild takes a long time

Hasn’t Madge signed or re-signed something like 17 players ?

So half the team isn’t his, most notably the guys on huge contracts. Some signings and re-signings were also oUt of necessity as well.

Yeah but that’s not his fault apparently.

Madge is strictly a forwards man ...the forwards showed some starch against Panthers and Parra but Madge needs to realise we ain’t Souths 2014 ..
Our backs have also turned to puss !

Imo an NRL team doesn’t really need coaching ... they need managing .

Mate you’re on the same thread over and over again ..... don’t you get it? Our bloody roster is crap.
Get over it there is no JC out there that can do any better.
And it’s funny you telling a two premierships winning coach that he can’t coach.

Seriously Josh. Can you please pinpoint and articulate exactly where and how we are building as a club because mate all I see are the same performances, the same words, the same excuses, the same situations roll out every week every year. There is no evidence that I see that we are building. We are doing stuff - yes. But we are not building. In fact it could be argued we are regressing.

Previous games we have defended our line well and held out multiple repeat sets. Tonight they seemed to score every time they got in an attacking position.

Have the players got to much control? Sheens, Taylor and Potter lost the players group and appears Maguire heading down the same route.

If the players aren't happy they can leave. There is not one single player in this side that I'd be disappointed to lose.

Our roster is crap but what does my head in is that these players have been playing since 6 years old and they can’t even do the basics correctly.

There is no evidence that I see that we are building. We are doing stuff - yes. But we are not building. In fact it could be argued we are regressing.

We are investing in youth, cleaning up our salary cap, new training facilities coming, Madge’s recruitment has been good, training at a higher level than previous years, while there’s been hiccups we have showed more heart and resilience in some perfomances this year then we have the last 3 seasons.

Madge is playing the long game and it will take a long time, the steps he has taken are the best ones you could do. He’s been a lot smarter than previous coaches and has a genuine eye on the long term future of the club which can be seen by trying to realign with St Greg’s among other things.

Unfortunately we will probably end up 10th or 11th on the ladder. Hard draw and some poor performances have lead us there but there isn’t an instant fix to our problems

Lots of the cap space is still tied up on Cleary signings though. It’s not like Madge hasn’t tried moving on dead weight, the Reynolds situation has been played out very publicly, and I imagine there would be more going on behind closed doors.

He can’t just say “Mbye, Russell, Jrey, McQueen time to go fellas” and they magically are off our books. Wish it were that simple, but the cap is stifling our opportunity, albeit we look flat nonetheless with who we do have playing well below potential.

According to zero tackle;
Mbye 950k, Jrey 750k, Packer 700k
According to fox sports;
McQueen 400k
And don’t forget our cap penalty

If Madge has that money available maybe we could pick up a David Fifita like marquee signing. But until the debts are paid we are left trying to sign young up and comers who will be cheap with potential upside.

Madge has no authority to just make those contracts just disappear. I like Madge as a coach and the above should not be a gripe for supporters. If I’m being critical of Madge, it’s around the recruitment (or lack thereof) of a goal kicker, a playmaker that can run the team, and maybe a specialist hooker (depending on how long Grant scenario was going on behind closed doors). However this also falls onto Hartigan and Co. but it’s not like there’s a bunch of options available the last off season.

Fact is the coach does not have much to work with. People are too concerned about instant results and aren’t looking at the big picture. Signing a good half should be priority, they tried hard to get Cade Cust.

I guessed it might be the start of the end for him when he dropped brooks. It just looked hollow and jumpy. They played really poorly tonight and effort was there, but it looked lethargic. They couldn't do anything right and most had bad games. I still believe Madge needs time. Signings have been good, young players look promising... God we've said this so many times. But I don't see a better coach out there so let's hope Madge turns this around.

Your weekly thread marathon ellery

Feels like groundhog day...

I am sure I made posts saying Benji needs to go / Benji is too inconsistent / Benji's one good game does not excuse his 4 bad ones in 2017, 2018, 2019...

I am also sure I mentioned Moses is not a captain once or twice.

All I really want is new leadership and some vets with legit footy IQ.

I am not even religious...but even I'd almost pray for someone like Michael Crocker, JWH and Wade Graham.
