**Gallen in wee bit of strife with law**
ADRIAN PROSZENKO
December 13, 2009
CRONULLA international forward Paul Gallen has allegedly brought the club into disrepute again after police caught him urinating near the head of a man in Sydney CBD on Friday night.
>
It is understood Gallen's alleged ''victim'' was a friend who was lying on the pavement in an intoxicated state after a night in town.
>
Sharks chairman Damian Irvine said he was ''filthy'' and ''gutted'' after learning that the off-field actions of a senior player who toured with the Kangaroos for the recent Four Nations tournament in England and France had again resulted in negative publicity.
>
''He'll be fronting us on Monday or Tuesday morning at the latest and we'll see what action we take on it,'' Irvine said last night.
>
''I'm filthy on it, I'm absolutely gutted. It's not a huge thing, it's a silly thing.
>
''We've got a lot of good momentum and anything like this that threatens the stability and positivity of the squad is just gutting. We don't need it and he should know better.
>
''We've got procedures in place to deal with this and the board will make the right call. The appropriate action will take place, without being melodramatic about it, and we'll go from there.''
>
According to a police statement: ''A 28-year-old man will be issued a criminal infringement notice (CIN) for offensive conduct after he allegedly urinated near the head of a man laying in a street in Sydney's CBD overnight. At about 3am today, police officers witnessed the alleged incident at the intersection Erskine and Sussex Streets in the city.
>
''Officers spoke to the man, who was advised he'd be issued with a CIN in the mail for offensive conduct.''
>
The latest incident is reminiscent of the act which ultimately led to the sacking of Todd Carney at the Raiders. Carney was subsequently deregistered from the NRL following claims he urinated on a pub patron during a night at the All Bar Nun bar in Canberra.
>
Gallen has a lengthy rap sheet but his indiscretions have been confined to the playing field. In 2008, the Kangaroos forward tried to rip open the stitching on a head wound of opposite Anthony Laffranchi. In the same year, he was accused of grabbing the testicles of Gold Coast centre Josh Graham and, in another game, slapped the head of Eels prop Josh Cordoba while he was lying unconscious on the ground.
>
Last season he was fined $10,000 and forced to apologise for racially abusing Dragons forward Mickey Paea.
>
''Paul, who is currently on holiday following the Kangaroo tour, had the courtesy to phone me to inform me there was a minor incident in town last night,'' Sharks CEO Richard Fisk said.
>
''We're gathering all the information and won't be making any other comment until we speak to Paul and investigate the matter.''
>
The Sharks have worked hard to overhaul their image in recent months after being plagued by a series of scandals last season.
>
The lowlights included the sacking of Reni Maitua for using performance-enhancing drugs, axing half Brett Seymour for repeated alcohol-fuelled indiscretions and chief executive Tony Zappia resigning after the infamous incident with employee Jenny Hall.

I can't believe this bloke….......Now taking a wee in public is not an uncommon occurance on the Streets of Sydney any Friday or Saturday night........

Too do so near a blokes head.....Take a bow Mr Gallen Your ALL class......

This bloke was his Clubs Captain...........Some Sharkies idolise him.......No matter how bad things get at the Wests Tigers.......Sheens don't suffer fools........

He is a grub and the sharks dont really need things like this happening atm. I hope he gets a suitable punishment from the club.

If I was peeing five metres away from a bloke I'd still be peeing "near" his head. Lets just wait on this one.

agreed, we don't know if he was a few inches away, or a few metres. Because honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if this is a massive beat up.

It's pretty high and mighty of some people to give it to him over this re: urinating in public… We have all done it before at one stage (yes, you too ladies)..

As for the proximity to someone's head.. I think it's a bit of creative writing from the journalist - if it was on him, that would of been the headline. It's his mate as well, so I'm sure it would of only been done as a joke and not like Carney who

This incident merely reinforces what a grub Gallen truly is. Hopefully Cronulla strip the captaincy from him but they're so clueless when it comes to running their club I'd be surprised if they do anything about it.

Yes i can see where you are coming from but he should have been smarter about it, i know how hard it can be hold it in but Gallen should have been more concious to the fact that it was the wrong thing to do because him not thinking may well cost cronulla as they have been trying to change there image and secure sponsors. The last thing they need is bad press and this is why even thow it was not a huge incident the club will be angry with the way he conducted himself.

He's not the captain anymore.

Some people need to get off their high horses. He pissed on a wall, big deal, if he wasn't a high profile RL player nobody would give a stuff, and even though he is a high profile RL player, 95% of people still don't give a stuff.

Tribunal inquiry into Gallen's wild act

CRONULLA forward Paul Gallen will this week be a test case for the NRL's new internal tribunal, which has been established to ensure misbehaving players receive consistent - and severe - punishment.

The new panel should be called into action after Gallen was caught by police urinating near the head of a friend in Sydney on Friday night. The drama occurred near Cockle Bay at Darling Harbour, with Cronulla's board to quiz Gallen over the incident either today or tomorrow.

Sharks management will send a detailed report to the NRL, outlining probable punishment by the club, before the Gallen incident will be handed over to the new three-man panel of NRL chief operating officer Graham Annesley and former players Michael Buettner and Mark O'Neill.

There could also be input from the NRL's independent investigator, Gail Clifford, a retired policewoman and security expert. The committee will then make a recommendation to NRL chief executive David Gallop over Gallen's behaviour and the punishment they feel is appropriate for the offence.

The league was battered by off-field incidents last season and officials are determined to put a stop to the bad behaviour. It is understood Gallop and Sharks CEO Richard Fisk have already discussed the matter.

"We will await a report from Cronulla before the matter is reviewed by the new committee and a recommendation is then made to David Gallop," Annesley said. "The committee was put in place to ensure each matter is reviewed consistently and appropriately."

The Sharks are poised to fine Gallen, the punishment expected to satisfy the committee and Gallop. "Conceptually, I think the tribunal is a good idea," Fisk said. "However, I am confident once all the facts emerge from the incident that our club will take the appropriate course of action.

"The club has arranged for a meeting with Paul some time this week."

Gallen, who returned a fortnight ago from Australia's successful Four Nations tournament, was issued with a criminal infringement notice for offensive conduct. The Sharks had a woeful season on and off the field in 2009 and the club was hoping for a fresh start.

This latest incident was the last thing they needed and Cronulla chairman Damien Irvine is understood to be furious with Gallen. Gallen had a difficult 2009 season, with a racial vilification incident involving St George Illawarra player Mickey Paea leading him to forfeiting the Sharks captaincy.

The back-rower was fined $10,000 and forced to apologise for racially abusing Paea.

Leave him alone, If he wasnt a footy player. No one would care.

He probably should ease back on the drinking, however.

My 3yr old used a tree on the weekend for some business. Lucky the cops wernt around..

Worlds going crazy.

Notice it's always the same names in the headlines…another player in trouble again today!!...it's time these guys chose another career I think.

For me it depends.

No problem with peeing in public if some discretion is used.

As for urinating near someones head it depends if he is a mate of Mr Gallens. Standard rules state that if your mate passes out he or she is free game to be drawn on, stripped and taped to a pole , "hitlered" or even for some glass bottom boating is considered acceptable

It would be ok if the bloke didn't have kids… he has to at least be some sort of a role model. He is already a grub on the field, which can be put down to playing the game, but there is no excuse off the field.
