Worth a read. Phil Clarke talks about artificially making a ball 'out' or 'dead', players being babied in scrums and referees throwing out the rule book in an attempt to speed up the game.

Some rules have been ignored for years now since the game became a TV product
The game must flow, the game must appeal…keep it quick and fluid and to hell with soe rules that slow it down.......yet the most exciting part of the game - the try....we all now usually have to wait, and wait, and wait...where once we all cheered the moment the ball was grounded in-goal, we now wait for a ref to say, "We have a tryyyyyyy.... please check everything as I have no self esteem or confidence anymore and you guys can cop the heat or save my ass if I'm wrong"....then replay after replay...then when its finally awarded we're all asleep.
Its hard to really celebrate a try when the moment was two minutes ago
