A heartfelt letter to Ivan Cleary

Like the majority on this forum I just want a team that plays for pride and passion.

I rather Ivan not take over as coach for the first couple of weeks and review the current roster then talk to player managers about potential recruitments for 2018.

To me we do not have the cattle for 2017 so I want Ivan to concentrate on 2018.

When he takes over the team mid 2017 please blood some players as long it does not effect our salary cap and second tier cap.

He shouldn't need a couple of games. Any coach with a brain should know who needs to go.

Yep, the blood doesn't stop spilling with JT. There's a shedload of deadwood that needs to go with him.
 
First thing to adress is the farcical right hand side defence. He needs to pretty much come in and say what Richie says word for word in the 12th man describing the commentary team's pronunciation's of the Pakistani players names.

"And from this moment we are *bangs fist on table* going to get it right".
 
I would suggest Milky has adequately expressed the opinions of half of this forum. The other half may disagree with some of the information but I'm sure nearly all would agree with the sentiment.
 
Sheens coached for 10 years if my memory is correct..Biggest plus for new coach is that he will have more salary cap then any other coach to spend I think over 8 million he can cherry pick who he wants I would go with Whare and Hiku from Penrith take Matalino from N.Z Tanne Milne from the dragons he's alot like a young Frizell play him in the second row and Alex Glenn that's what I would go after first

Absolutely!

I just hope we're not all expecting miracles from Cleary though, I think we're still gonna have to go through quite a lot of pain before this team can be even just competitive, let alone winning matches. It's almost criminal that they weren't prepared properly over the off season and have literally gone backwards as a team - what the hell have they been doing?

Coaches have come and gone, some with success, some with failure, some with arguably unfair critics. Tim Sheens served our beloved club for a 9 year period, his tenure encompassed success and downfalls, though mostly remembered for his remarkable coaching in the 2005 grand final victory. Tim Sheens successor, Mick Potter wasn't as successful in the role. Enduring a reign in the coaching position which was hindered by injury after injury. The Robbie Farah debacle which came to light and most importantly the Benji Marshall benching. Mick Potter in my own opinion was a great coach who suffered from instability within the club, this included a lack of power, an incompetent club board and CEO and to a lesser extent poor strengthening and conditioning staff.

Mick Potter was not sacked but was replaced by Jason Taylor in the coaching box following the conclusion of his contract. Jason Taylor will always be remembered for the grudge he held against club legend Robbie Farah. This personal grudge was not put aside during business and therefore made life for himself at the club more difficult than it should have been. Jason Taylor would consistently select sub-par reserve graders to play first grade. These poor decisions lead to incompetency in the retention of our players, including the loss of Joshua Addo Carr who has now gone on to play first grade for the Melbourne Storm.

What fans have been crying for in recent years is a coach who is committed to the club, one who will make the tough decisions, one who will select players for performance rather than reputation. The last time our coach made a tough decision was Mick Potter placing Benji Marshall on the bench due to poor performances. It is calls like this that supporters are desperate for. We want players on the field who will grind our games for eachother, put their bodies on the line, defend and show some PRIDE in the emblem that they represent.

There is no instant expectations, supporters do not expect a miracle finals appearance this season. With almost the entire roster off-contract, we hope to not see many of these players leave.

On behalf of the majority of Wests Tigers supporters, we would like a captain who runs out onto the field everyday with their heart in their sleeve and does the club proud. A captain who is able to show pride and love every time they represent their club, whether it is on or off the field. A clear choice in this regard, Elijah Taylor.

The Big '4' have been the vocal point of the 2017 campaign, along with their manager Mr Moses. It is believed that the club is being held to ransom by 4 footballers who haven't been able to win a game in weeks and make a finals series in years. Well, I am sure the tables can turn now and we can farewell these potentially great players without any regrets. James Tedesco is the only player who out of these four, should be retained. Our salary cap money can be better spent elsewhere with players like Nelson Asofa Solemona, Kane Evans, Felise Kaufusi, Ben Matulino and Jack Bird all off contract (hint hint).

Mr Cleary, you are professional enough to understand the basics of Rugby League without a passionate supporter telling you. We all have faith in the decisions that you will make and we hope that you will make the tough ones which proceeding coaches have not been able to do.

Your success in re-building clubs speaks louder than any words. You are an asset and we look forward to welcoming you to the Wests Tigers in 2017.

If only the players (and that's each and every player) had an understanding of this letter, we'd have a passionate club that would never give in!

Cleary would be mad to come here. You still have time Ivan, run for your life lol….
If he does come though, my hope would be that Suli is the last NRL debutante to play for us for the next couple of years.
 
You reckon he won't promote from within Stryker?

Good chance of bringing some kids up this year, especially if he makes decisions on Idris/Kev/Lovett/Ballin etc, and any of the Big Snore are headed elsewhere.

The biggest problem with this club is we promote from within far too much. The future for us isnt solely youth. We have bet on it for the majority of our life and lost big. The future is attracting seasoned professionals to the club to teach the couple of young players what it means to be a footballer.
 
That doesn't appease the fossils though
The club officially came out some time ago saying a certain number (way too many) local juniors would make up the roster for the next few years…. It's what you do when you cant or won't attract established first grade/rep quality players externally

Not saying I don't agree, rather that if Cleary knows that some of the Big 4 (ugh,) are going to walk and that he has no interest in keeping on certain players outside of them, that he wouldn't drop them and blood some youth to look at who to draw on next year?
 
There needs to be balance which is what Cleary will bring. Develop your own and sign players to fill gaps and bring the young ones through. We will always rely on juniors but we have to retain them letting Paseka and Pap go this year is ludicrous when we haven't locked anyone up yet.
