Waste of keyboard strokes talking about Cronk.

Will this darn off-season never end!!!

C'mon Helmesy you wouldn't be salivating like the rest of us if the SMH had a picture showing Humphrey's ,Sheens and Cronk sitting down having coffee and croissants and shaking hands at the end of the meeting

Yeah but I think we all know it isn't going to happen!

Your probably right Helmesy but if we say let go of Lote (off contract),Moltzen (off contract) ,possibly another forward and backended his contract with Ellis probably leaving at the end of 2013 it is possible ….....

I wouldn't want to get into the habit of back-ending contracts as it could leave the club in financial stress in the long term.

Sure one may be ok, but he'll be eating up more and more of the salary cap as each year passes. Put another one or two back-ended contracts in that to and you could be in trouble.

I think its safe to assume the NRL Grant will be increased for 2013 after all the woohaa by the Clubs at the end of last year, plus the Salary Cap will also be increased substantialy… With that in mind, hopefully the majority of 'back-ended' contracts will be absorbed into the room within the new Salary Cap.

Not worth more then $500000 in my opinion, would rather Moltz @ half & Billy the kid @ Fullback, & Moltzen wont be leaving after last years stuff up.

Blair was the obvious forwards leader last year for melbourne and the driving force for their go forward which gave Cronk the room to do what he does. Without Blair there this year, I'd be interested to see if their go forward is the same and if Cronk will be the same type of player because of it. He'll have a lot more responsibilities this year as he'll be more of a go to man now than in previous years. If he's worth $850K this is the year he'll prove his worth.

I thought the same thing, look what happened to Melb once Blair was suspended!

Cronk is a genius and IMO the best half if you have a decent team you could have, he is absolutely worth huge dollars, we won't be able to get him. I hate when people say he is only good cause of the team he plays in. He is outstanding in his own right, and he is a huge reason they are so good.
I saw him beat the bulldogs by himself , when all the Melbourne stars were in SOO

He is worth as much as anyone in the NRL.
Surprised others are saying his not.

We won't get him, but I'd love him (he can bring Billy in that package deal we've heard about)

Mail ….Cronk has interest from more then 1 Australian super 15 club . His total earning potential in rugby would be close to what gituea was getting at the western force .

As a person who watches a lot of rugby , it is very evident in the way that Cronk plays half back in league , that he would make a world class fly Half in Rugby .

Agreed… My understanding was the QRU had him earmarked from a young age while playing Schoolboys Rugby. I've never understood how he ended up at Melbourne considering he came through the Souths-Logan System?!

One thing in Cooper's/Leagues favour though, he doesnt seem like a person who is hugely motivated by money like some others I've known. I think if he gets the right offer from League, he will stay. If you look at his record, he should be in the Top 10 money earners if League is fairdinkum!

I know this is horrible for rugby league and I hate losing players to other codes. But a small part of me is curious to see how our players would fare playing in a stronger international competition. I'd love to sit back and watch a wallabies side that has the likes of Slater, Cronk, Inglis, even Benji. I'm not at all suggesting a mass rugby exodus, just a bit of curiosity.

I reckon Ellis will resign with Wests and stay in the NRL for a few more years,
with Lotte, Heighnigton and a couple of others to leave at the end of 2012.

Ellis has made no secret that he would like to finish up in England. My pick will be Castleford, as he was Castleford junior and he loved the team as a child.

Rhino is contracted to the end of 2013 IIRC?

No, Ellis will leave at the end of 2013\. He has already said he wants to finish his career back home

That is right,Gaz is signed until the end of next year, when I think he will head back home to play for Cas,he may take Heighno with him, hopefully he takes him to Cas if he does.

Yeah Heigno will most likely finish up at the end of next year as well. I think he would want to play a couple of seasons in England

ARU has a huge half back problem looming, with Will Genia yesterday announcing a" wait & see policy" regarding the future of his Qld buddy Quade Cooper in Rugby before he considers resigning, plus simulataneously expressing a desire to play in Europe. His Wallaby captaincy prospects have recently dimmed with Horwill getting the gig in November,& Pockok looming large.
With Luke Burgess(the only back up interantional halfback of any quality )having already gone to Europe,Genia may pressure the ARU to take a risk & fast track Cronk as an alternative Rugby half in 2103
..& if the ARU decides they want him, they'll afford him.

The answer to that Watto is easy, Peter O'Sullivan paid him a bucket load of money to join the storms junior ranks. Just like he did with with Inglis, Hoffman, Falou, Slater and Smith, everyone knew they were awesome, the storm just threw cash at them.

Cooper was an outstanding fly half as junior rugby player, I assume they would be looking at him for that role.

Cooper would be an average Halfback in Union… If he goes, it will be to play Flyhalf!

Think Cronk is a top notch playmaker who wld be significantly better than "average" in either role …& with Quade Cooper stuffing ARU around together with a question mark over Berrick Barnes long term health, even more reason for Cronk to be pursued by Rugby.
They just dont have many quality options at half or five-eight,& with one on their doorstep able to fill either role....?
Personally I dont think WT shd waste too much time in pursuit as others from either code will have far deeper pockets
