Our forwards were good, kicking game good, our backline except for Laurie are poor. Knights were terrible, but would have killed us if they had their stars playing. We need more attack or it will be a sad year. Happy for the win.

I thought barring AJ our back line was pretty good

Talau maybe a bit hit and miss but he’s still learning his trade

Roberts will be a gun. We just need to give him more space...but how good did he look effortlessly roaming around the field?

Brooks played a pretty levelled game. Play like that every week and there will be a lot less criticism

Doueihi & Laurie the clear stand outs

Also, Jimmy doesn't really look like he's enjoying being close to Nofa....we need to give him the ball more, Nofa needs to stop being such a ball hog.

Surely you're not expecting a centre to get most of his ball from his outside winger?

The problem is our attacking emphasis on the left side towards Lucy. A little puzzling given how poor AJ has been.

I think JTJ and Nofo have both struggled to get into any game as the ball's not coming their way.

2 things . The Frizell try , where brooks had 3 goes at Watson , and Frizell, was Because Luci was out of place , leaving a gaping hole on the inside of brooks , who couldn’t shut it down .

And the try before , I believe it was Pearce , was 💯 Mikalele fault . He came in on the ball player for no real reason , creating a massive hole for Watson again , to go through .

This is the stuff , Madge would have the Poos about , as it’s just concentration stuff , and a lack of trust in the person next to you .

Also the Tex Hoy try , was I believe , a lack of communication between brooks , and Talau , and brooks making the wrong choice . But really once he went in Talau and Kepoa needed to follow .

Luciano isn’t keeping up with the speed of the game. Maybe shift him in to the middle in shorter spells.

I think if we are honest though we really didn't win imo newcastle lost.

I find it hard to be too critical of LL when you look at the workload and minutes he plays compared to the rest of the forward pack. No way will we get away with our stats from the forwards yesterday and win many games. Newcastles mistakes handed it to us on a platter.

Ok, so the forum was down, which was extra disappointing given that we won, but I took some notes/comments during the game, just wondering if anyone else did the same 🙂

1st Half

Kepaoa is an idiot, kicking on the 3rd down the sideline

Talau left Brooks hanging in the breeze trying to go for the intercept on the Knights first try

AD kicking well, Knights knock on

Great kick by Brooks for AD to score! 12-4

Far out Tamou...right after we score..good defence at least to hold them out

Lucky bounce Knights, but no try

Great stuff Daine stopped a 40/20, but we got lucky

Great take Lucy and Saifiti off for the game by the looks

Awful pass Lucy, we keep throwing it behind the player

Garbage 6 more on the last, he can't just disappear from the ruck...Knights score 12-8

Pretty good half running into a breeze

2nd Half

Good first set for the 2nd half and a bit of bad luck with the kick

Great pass by Brooks and run from Stef! 18-8

Just a couple of other observations that come to mind from my fading memory.

Giving them a six again on the last and they score a couple of of plays later had me kicking the walls.

Dumb kick off penalty kicking the ball dead. That's a couple of dumb kick off penalties already and we've only played 3 rounds.

Doueihi kicking the ball on tackle one after we get six again in a great attacking position. (admittedly he may not have heard the call)

Other than that, I think Doueihi is coming along really well and his goal kicking is a revelation and probably won us the game.

Was a big supporter of AJ, but quickly losing patience. The kick along the sideline was just dumb.

If you are going to kick, kick infield where you have 2 or 3 players coming through in support. Looked like a hero play kicking for himself and was never going to come off.

I may be wrong but to me AJ is not a winger and his constant selection just goes to show how light on we are for wingers.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to crucify the guy and I think he can be a classy player some day but I think he needs a run at centre in NSW cup to develop his game.

Newcastle were still punching holes in our middle at will and our left side D still needs work, would hate to see what they would have done to us if they were at full strength.

As many are saying, JTJ needs a lot more ball and involvement in the game, and to me has so far been a bit disappointing, but early days yet.

Wasn't too disappointed with Mbye's stint but would have been filthy with his fumble over the line if we lost that game.

What sort of a beast is Stephano, please, can I have some more?

Probably goes with out saying, but Daine Laurie could be anything. Love the way you play and please stay healthy.

Thought we showed some signs of resilience and mental toughness to come back and win it the way we did and hope we can use that as a base to build on.

I know you are being sarcastic but credit where credit is due, Brooks had a pretty good game. Kicking was much better, general play was much better. 1 missed tackle that led to a try. But overall much improved. Though he outplayed Perace.

He missed twice in that Frizell try. He had two bites at stopping that try. He had a great game and didn't suck at all. It's just those frustrating shirt grabs on big men.
It was a crucial point in the game that gave them the lead. That's why it sticks out so badly.

Brooks didn't wrap up Hoy and he got the ball to Frizell. Laurie missed Frizzell and Brooks tried to get to him but he was through. If you are going to blame Brooks for the miss you can't excuse Laurie.

And LL - he pushed up on Watson and nudged him. he should have then slid across as Watson kept going sideways. When Hoy stepped inside Brooks the gap was created because LL hadn't followed Watson across. Brooks then tackles Hoy and immediately jumps to his feet to try and get Frizell who should have been covered by LLIt was just lazy all round by LL.

Yes he missed a tackle that lead to points but he didn't give up on the play and attempted to tackle Frizzell I believe..that's the difference

And missed that too.

"Big Deal" - so he missed 2 tackles on the one player (no half has ever been targeted by a big second rower before). he had a good game, that's what everyone wanted - he delivered a good game.

He is one of the best defensive halves in the game - that's ok keep ripping into him....no wonder his confidence is done.

Credit where credit is due or do you only look at negatives.

AJ needs some time on the sidelines to get his body right. He is obviously playing busted, but that is no excuse for just giving up on the ball he dropped 'cold'. He should have gone after it and tried to minimise his mistake instead of just staring at it. Poor!
Lucy needs to have a spell at some stage during the game . He struggles to play as many minutes as he is. Was I correct in thinking he was defending 1 spot closer in?
Douehi was great as was Laurie. Brooks was pretty good considering the week he had.

Just as well Tamou is a good leader, because he is a very average footballer. His best trait is his quick play the balls.
Steph was awesome as was Musgrove.

Much better performance, but LOTS to work on.

LL has been found out alot in defense. When be is marker both the Raiders/Roosters attacked his side instantly. Knights hit him as well.
